Abstract

Appendix 1. TITLE: Scalp Shielding Formulations to prevent chemical penetration, burning, skin colour staining and irritation associated to process of on-skin chemical hair colouring, lightening or bleaching preparations. Technical Field: On-skin mammal hair colouring, lightening or bleaching services. Background: [0001] Hair colouring, lightening or bleaching applications designed to bring an effect of changing the natural colour state of human hair is a common practice done in professional salon environments and home environments all over the world on a daily basis. These processes use chemical preparations of an alkaline pH nature to affect a major part of the colour transformation. [0002] The chemical process used to achieve the colour lightening and or deposit of pigment is an oxidation process and these colouring chemicals often have a negative effect on the comfort of the recipient, the condition of affected skin and often result in unwanted and unsightly colour staining of the skin, chemical irritation and skin inflammation. Despite a good professional Hairdressing Salon common knowledge and many well documented examples of irritation and unsightly skin staining caused by alkaline based colour preparations only a few formulations have been made to assist in this area. [0003] Of these formulations mentioned above, examination of these preparations reveals that they are either petroleum jelly based barriers to aqueous preparations or are derived from combinations of ingredients such as polysorbates, silicone oils or natural oils and maintain a liquid form during the colour process allowing for some penetration of the colour chemicals through these preparations into the skin through the protective medium. [0004] Additionally, none of these known formulations address the free radical singlet oxygen damage created by the use of Hydrogen Peroxide within the alkaline based colour and bleaching preparations. [0005] A formulation that can be applied to the skin of the scalp, hairline or other skin to which the colour formulation is about to be applied which will form a homogeneous film within the Stratum corneum and on top of the skin's surface once an alkaline substance has been applied to the affected area are not known. [0006] Further a formulation which targets free singlet oxygen by the addition of active free radical scavenging agents to quench and neutralise the damage done by the free radical oxidation within the skin is not known. [0007] It is therefore objects of the present invention to provide such formulations and methods of preventing alkaline chemical hair colour and bleaching preparations and free radical singlet oxygen from penetrating the skin and rendering such undesirable effects as skin inflammation, skin burning, skin itching and skin colour staining when using such formulations. Summary of the Invention: [0008] Generally speaking, the present invention is a product formulation and product application technique applied to a mammal's skin for the purpose of creating a protective shielding system from the chemical preparations of an alkaline pH hair colour and bleaching preparation used to effect hair colour change. [0009] In certain non-limiting embodiments, the present invention is directed to methods of preventing skin disorders, colour staining, burning, inflammation and irritation associated with alkaline pH hair colour and bleaching preparation including topical administration to a mammal a composition, the skin protection composition including (a) at least one agent derived from Chitosan; (b) at least one anti-oxidant compound present in a therapeutically effective amount to quench free radical singlet oxygen and other free radical compounds; (c) a cosmetic and/or pharmaceutical carrier effective for topical administration of the at least one skin protecting agent and at least one free radical scavenging agent to a mammal. [0010] In certain non-limiting embodiments of the present invention, the composition in any embodiment of the present invention may include at least one polysaccharide agent called Chitosan (Chitin) and derivatives, combinations and mixtures thereof. [0011] In certain non-limiting embodiments, the present invention, the composition in any embodiment of the present invention may further include at least one antioxidant, which in certain embodiments of the present invention may be selected from the group consisting of ascorbic acid, tocopherol, catalase, tocopheryl acetate, lycopene, carotenoids, resveratrol, astaxanthin, anthocyanins, proanthocyanins, polyphenols, tannins and derivatives, combinations and mixtures thereof. [0012] The inventive formulation may, in various exemplary, non-limiting embodiments, be provided in forms suitable for topical administration and that the resulting transepidermal delivery of a therapeutically effective amount of Chitosan, for example and without limitation the inventive formulation may be provided as creams, gels, lotions, solutions, sprays, emulsions, aerosols, and combinations thereof and may provide multilamellar versicles, liposomes, nanospheres, misrosponges, or combinations thereof. In certain exemplary, non -limiting embodiments, the active agents, including Chitosan, may be encapsulated (including microencapsulation) in the inventive formulations, for example, to be released when the encapsulation is ruptured under pressure, for time-release of the agent, and so forth. Suitable encapsulation materials and techniques, including those which release the encapsulated agent over time, are known in the art.

Description

EDITORIAL NOTE 2013100317 There is five pages of the description only TITLE: Scalp Shielding Formulations to help prevent chemical penetration, burning, skin colour staining and irritation associated to process of chemical hair colouring, lightening and bleaching preparations. Technical Field: On-skin mammal hair colouring, lightening of bleaching services. Background of the Invention: [0001] Hair colouring, lightening or bleaching applications designed to bring an effect of changing the natural colour state of human hair is a common practice done in professional salon environments and home environments all over the world on a daily basis. These processes use chemical preparations of an alkaline pH nature to affect a major part of the colour transformation. [0002] The chemical process used to achieve the colour lightening and or deposit of pigment is an oxidation process and these colouring chemicals often have a negative effect on the comfort of the recipient, the condition of effected skin and often result in unwanted and unsightly colour staining of the skin. [0003] For example when an alkaline hair colour, lightening, or bleaching preparation is mix to administer to the scalp skin to change the existing hair colour in some manner it is combined with Hydrogen Peroxide to act as a source of free singlet oxygen to either assist in the development of pigment or to oxidise existing pigment within the hair shaft. This oxidative process coupled with the dying or bleaching active ingredients are often the source of skin irritation. [0004] Additionally, the process of hair colouring often has the adverse and unsightly residual side effect of colouring the skin to which the preparation has been applied. Removal of this unsightly and unwanted staining can be difficult and in itself serve to irritate the skin of the recipient. [0005] In the current market there are a number of competitors with additives that may be added to hair colour formulations to try and reduce the sensitivity and skin staining during the colour process. Our invention is unique in so much that we use a formulation which contains an active ingredient which is chemically activated upon the application of an alkaline substance on the skin which in turn forms a physical barrier within the uppermost layers of the skin and on top of the skin. Summary of the Invention: [0006] The invention is a product formulation containing Chitosan (Chitin) applied to mammal skin for the purpose of acting as a protective shielding system and may be applied immediately before an on-skin colour, lightening or bleaching application and additionally may be applied at some intervals between multiple colour applications on the same skin during the colour process of an on-skin alkaline pH hair colouring, lightening and bleaching applications. [0007] In certain non-limiting embodiments of the present invention, the composition in any embodiment of the present invention may include at least one polysaccharide agent called Chitosan (Chitin) and derivatives, combinations and mixtures thereof. [0008] In certain non-limiting embodiments of the present invention, Chitosan (Chitin) is a natural polysaccharide derived from several natural sources including but not limited to fungus, mushrooms, shell fish, prawn shells, insect exoskeleton, or other naturally derived source, either derived solely from one source or used in a formulation as a combination of the aforementioned natural sources. [0009] In certain non-limiting embodiments of the present invention, this product formulation described in this invention exists in a liquid state at an acidic pH value and sets/gels to form a continuous or near continuous protective barrier film when exposed to an alkaline pH based hair colouring, hair lightening, or hair bleaching formulation. [0010] In certain non-limiting embodiments of the present invention, the product formulation creates a physical and chemical barrier within the uppermost layers of the skin and/or on the skin's surface to actively resist the penetration into the skin of the chemicals contained within the hair colouring, lightening or bleaching preparation. [0011] In certain non-limiting embodiments of the present invention, the product formulation is applied to the skin, usually but not limited to the scalp skin and hairline in the area of the on-skin colour application, with the purpose to prevent or help prevent the skin absorption of the chemicals used in the hair colouring, lightening and bleaching application. [0012] In certain non-limiting embodiments of the present invention, the product formulation is activated through the physical contact or gaseous vapour exposure of an alkaline preparation and in turn will form a protective barrier within the uppermost layers of the skin and on the skin's surface which will act to subsequently help protect against skin irritation, inflammation and residual skin colour staining associated with the process of on skin alkaline pH hair colouring, lightening and bleaching applications for human hair. [0013] In certain non-limiting embodiments of the present invention, the product formulation described in this invention is applied to the skin prior to the application of the hair colour, lightening or hair bleaching preparations whereby it shall be allowed to absorb into the Stratum corneum and Stratum granulosum layers of the skin as well as allowed to form a homogenous liquid film on the outer surface of the skin. [0014] In certain non-limiting embodiments of the present invention, the product formulation once applied onto the skin and absorbed into the uppermost layers of the skin and once coated on top of the skin has the functional ability to assist the skin's natural barrier function when colour chemical is applied and in turn helps protect from the colour chemical penetrating through the Stratum corneum and Stratum granulosum skin deeper into the living skin structure. [0016] In certain non-limiting embodiments the present invention, the composition in any embodiment of the present invention may further include at least one antioxidant, which in certain embodiments of the present invention may be selected from the group consisting of ascorbic acid, tocopherol, catalase, tocopheryl acetate, lycopene, carotenoids, resveratrol, astaxanthin anthocyanins, proanthocyanins, polyphenols, tannins and derivatives, combinations and mixtures thereof. [0017] In certain non-limiting embodiments the present invention, the anti-oxidants described above further support the protection of the skin by quenching or neutralising free radical singlet oxygen molecules and other free radical compounds released by the colour chemicals and hydrogen peroxide colour developer applied to the skin's surface. [0018] In certain non-limiting embodiments the present invention, the product formulation described may use Chitosan (Chitin) at levels between 0.001% and 99.99% as an active ingredient in the formulation.
