AUSTRALIA Patents Act COMPLETE SPECIFICATION (ORIGINAL) Class Int. Class Application Number: Lodged: Complete Specification Lodged: Accepted: Published: Priority Related Art: Name of Applicant: Uvex Arbeitsschutz GmbH Actual Inventor(s): Lars Horn, Johannes Kailas, Michael Abel, Harald Frank, Klaus Debel Address for Service and Correspondence: PHILLIPS ORMONDE FITZPATRICK Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys 367 Collins Street Melbourne 3000 AUSTRALIA Invention Title: FACE PROTECTOR FOR FASTENING TO SAFETY GOGGLES Our Ref: 954477 POF Code: 1611/307228 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to applicant(s): -1- 2 FACE PROTECTOR FOR FASTENING TO SAFETY GOGGLES This application claims priority from German Application No. 10 2011 084 151.2 filed on 7 October 2011, the contents of which are to be taken as 5 incorporated herein by this reference. The invention relates to a face protector for fastening to safety goggles. The applicant is aware of a face protector from DE 10 2006 048 204 Al 10 having a headband, a face shield and a protection panel pivotably articulated to a forehead cover, which is to protect from the influences of light during welding work. A face protector of this type is awkward to handle and disadvantageous with regard to wearing comfort. 15 The above discussion of background art is included to explain the context of the present invention. It is not to be taken as an admission that any of the documents or other material referred to was published, known or part of the common general knowledge in Australia at the priority date of any one of the claims of this specification. 20 A desirable outcome of the present invention is to provide an improved face protector, which offers improved wearing comfort and allows easier handling, in particular when the face protector may not be removed for safety reasons. 25 Throughout the description and claims of this specification, the word "comprise" and variations of that word, such as "comprising" and "comprises" are not intended to exclude other additives, steps or integers.
An aspect of the present invention is to provide a face protector, which offers improved wearing comfort and allows easier handling, in particular when the face protector may not be removed for safety reasons. 5 The aspect is achieved by a face protector for fastening to safety goggles, wherein the face protector including a face protector upper part to protect a nose section of a person wearing the face protector, a face protector lower part to protect a mouth section of the person and two pivoting elements arranged along a pivot axis to pivotably articulate the face protector lower 10 part on the face protector upper part about the pivot axis. The core of the invention is that a face protector is configured in two parts with a face protector upper part and a face protector lower part articulated to the face protector upper part. The face protector upper part is used to protect a nose section of a person wearing the face protector. The face protector lower 15 part is used to protect a mouth section of the person. Safety goggles, on which the face protector can be fastened, are used, in particular, to protect the eyes and a forehead section of the person. By connecting the face protector upper part and the face protector lower part, and the fastening thereof to the safety goggles, the person's face is completely and reliably 20 protected. It is, in particular, possible for the person to additionally be able to wear a safety helmet. The face protector lower part is pivotably articulated about the pivot axis by means of two pivoting elements, which are arranged along a pivot axis, on the face protector upper part. A face protector of this type facilitates handling, as the face protector lower part 25 can be pivoted relative to the face protector upper part. As a result, it is possible for the person to be able to take in liquid, without the face protector having to be removed, in that the face protector lower part is pivoted upward and the mouth section of the person is accessible to supply a drinks container, in particular a bottle. It is also conceivable for the 4 person to be supplied with liquid by means of a drinking straw or tube with liquid. The supply of liquid when the face protector is placed on is, in particular, advantageous in work environments, which forbid the person to remove the face protector for safety reasons. A face protector of this type 5 may be used, for example, in aggressive environments, and in particular, in mining. The face protector protects the person from aggressive vapours, heat, acids and/or is used as impact protection. Apart from taking in liquid, the person is also enabled to communicate. Since the face protector lower part can be pivoted, the ability to communicate is also improved when 10 there are loud environmental noises. In addition, it is possible for the person to wear a breathing protection mask under the face protector and to be able to take this off without having to remove the face protector. Since the face protector may be separated from the safety goggles, it can be offered and marketed independently of the safety goggles and, in 15 particular, as a retrofittable protector for the safety goggles. A further embodiment of the present invention provides for a face protector, in which the pivoting elements are fastened on the face protector upper part laterally, in particular in the region of an ear section of the 20 person, allows better and in particular, smoother pivotability of the face protector lower part on the face protector upper part. A further embodiment of the present invention provides for a face protector, in which the pivot axis is arranged below an upper edge of the 25 face protector facing the safety goggles, allows improved handling of the face protector lower part during the pivoting. The face protector lower part may, in particular, be pivoted with one hand. In particular, the pivot axis is spaced apart from an upper edge of the face protector by at least 12 mm, in particular at least 15 mm and, in particular 17 mm.
A further embodiment of the present invention provides for a face protector, in which the pivoting elements in each case have a pin, which is oriented along the pivot axis and on which the face protector lower part is 5 pivotably arranged with a pivoting recess, is particularly uncomplicated and quick and economical to assemble. In particular, a face protector of this type allows a defined positioning of the face protector lower part on the face protector upper part. 10 A further embodiment of the present invention provides for a face protector, in which the pivoting recess has a pivoting portion, which is round, at least in portions, for pivoting on the pin and an assembly portion connected to the pivoting portion to assemble and disassemble the face protector lower part on the face protector upper part, allows particularly 15 uncomplicated assembly by pushing the face protector lower part onto the pivoting elements fastened to the face protector upper part. Since an assembly portion of a pivoting recess has a smaller width than a diameter of a pin of a pivoting element, the face protector lower part, after being pushed onto the pin and subsequent pivoting, is securely and reliably held 20 on the pivoting elements. The face protector can be disassembled in an uncomplicated manner. A further embodiment of the present invention provides for a face protector, in which the pivoting elements in each case have a latching arm, 25 which extends transversely and, in particular, perpendicularly from the pivot axis, with a latching projection, which is, in particular, oriented parallel to the pivot axis and can be arranged in a latching manner on at least one latching recess of the face protector lower part, allows a locking of a pivoting position of the face protector lower part relative to the face 6 protector upper part. For this purpose, a latching projection, which can be arranged in a latching manner on a latching recess of the face protector lower part, is formed on a pivoting element. A plurality of and, in particular, five latching recesses may be provided on the face protector 5 lower part. The latching recesses may, for example, be arranged at constant and, in particular 150 angular spacings, about the pivot axis. Since the pivot axis is arranged below the safety goggles and, in particular, below a support band, a locking of the pivoting position of the face protector lower part is also improved. 10 A further embodiment of the present invention provides for a face protector including at least one first fastening element, in particular a first fastening hook, of the face protector upper part for releasable fastening to the safety goggles and, in particular, for securing against a downward displacement 15 of the face protector on the safety goggles, allows a fastening by the face protector upper part to the safety goggles, in particular a securing against a downward displacement of the face protector on the safety goggles, in other words in the direction of the throat of the person, being provided. 20 A further embodiment of the present invention provides for a face protector, including at least one second fastening element, in particular a second fastening hook, of the face protector upper part for releasable fastening on the safety goggles and, in particular, for securing against a lateral displacement of the face protector on the safety goggles, ensures a 25 fastening on safety goggles, a lateral displacement of the face protector on the safety goggles being prevented, in particular. A further embodiment of the present invention provides for a face protector, including at least one third fastening element, in particular a 7 fastening dome, of the face protector upper part for releasable fastening on the safety goggles and, in particular, for securing against an upward displacement of the face protector on the safety goggles, allows the fastening of safety goggles, an upward displacement of the face protector 5 on the safety goggles being prevented, in particular. A further embodiment of the present invention provides for a face protector including at least one first fastening element, in particular a first fastening hook, of the face protector upper part for releasable fastening to the safety 10 goggles and, in particular, for securing against a downward displacement of the face protector on the safety goggles, and including at least one second fastening element, in particular a second fastening hook, of the face protector upper part for releasable fastening on the safety goggles and, in particular, for securing against a lateral displacement of the face protector 15 on the safety goggles, and including at least one third fastening element, in particular a fastening dome, of the face protector upper part for releasable fastening on the safety goggles and, in particular, for securing against an upward displacement of the face protector on the safety goggles, ensures fastening of the face protector, which is secure and can, at the same time, 20 be released again, on safety goggles. An unintentional displacement of the face protector on the safety goggles, for example as a result of the effect of an impact, does not lead to an unintentional shifting of the face protector and therefore to an impairment of the protective effect. The unintentional release of the face protector from the safety goggles is made more difficult. 25 The fastening of the face protector to the safety goggles is releasable, in other words, the fastening of the two components can be released again in the event of damage and/or soiling of the face protector or the safety goggles. It is therefore possible to only clean or exchange or repair the relevant component.
A further embodiment of the present invention provides for a face protector, including at least one ventilation opening, in particular arranged on the face protector lower part, for an air supply, allows an improved air 5 supply into an area protected by the face protector. Breathing is facilitated for the person. A further embodiment of the present invention provides for a face protector, in which four ventilation openings are provided, which in total 10 have a cross sectional area for the air supply, which is at least 600 mm 2 , in 22 particular at least 750 mm and, in particular, at least 860 mm 2 , allows improved air circulation between an environment and the region covered by the face protector. 15 A further embodiment of the present invention provides for a face protector, in which the at least one ventilation opening has a cover, in particular moulded in one piece on the face protector lower part, in such a way that in particular dirt impinging at the front and laterally on the face protector, for example in the form of dust and/or pieces of stone, does not 20 lead to a soiling or clogging of the ventilation opening. A further embodiment of the present invention provides for a face protector, in which the face protector upper part has a nose shaping in such a way that a perpendicular nose spacing from the nose of a person wearing 25 the face protector to an inside of the face protector facing the person is at least 12 mm, in particular at least 15 mm and in particular at least 18 mm, allows a person to wear a breathing protection mask under the face protector and to wear said mask on his nose, in other words between his nose and a nose shaping of the face protector upper part.
A further embodiment of the present invention provides for a face protector, in which the face protector lower part has a jaw shaping in such a way that a perpendicular jaw spacing from the lower jaw of a person 5 wearing the face protector to an inside of the face protector facing the person is at least 40 mm, in particular at least 42 mm and in particular at least 48 mm, improves the wearing comfort of the face protector as a whole. Moreover, it is possible for a person to wear various breathing protection apparatuses and/or masks, in particular those of different sizes, 10 under the face protector. A large volume is provided between the face of the person and an inside of the face protector facing the person. A claustrophobic feeling of constriction felt to be subjectively disadvantageous is reduced in a person wearing the face protector. 15 Further features, advantages and details of the invention emerge from the following description of an embodiment with the aid of the figures of the drawings, in which: Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of safety goggles with a face protector 20 according to the invention from the front, Fig. 2 shows a view of the face protector according to Fig. I with a pivoted face protector lower part, 25 Fig. 3 shows the face protector according to Fig. 1 in an arrangement released from the safety goggles, 10 Fig. 4 shows an enlarged detailed view in an exploded view of a pivoting connection of the face protector upper part and face protector lower part, 5 Fig. 5 shows an enlarged detailed view of the face protector from the rear and Fig. 6 shows an enlarged sectional view along the section line VI-VI in Fig. 4. 10 A face protector 1 shown in Fig. 1 and 2 comprises a face protector upper part 2 to protect a nose section of a person a face protector lower part 3 to protect a mouth section of the person. The face protector 1 is adapted to a shape of safety goggles 4. The face protector 1 is fastened by the face 15 protector upper part 2 to the safety goggles 4. The face protector 1 has a substantially convexly formed surface facing the outer environment. The face protector 1 extends laterally in each case over a jaw region of a person, so a danger of injury to side face sections of the person, in particular in the cheek and in the lateral jaw region of the person is 20 prevented. The face protector has a width of 204 mm. The overall height, i.e. the height of the safety goggles 4 and the face protector 1 fastened thereon is 195 mm. This ensures that the total face region of a person, i.e. from the chin and jaw section to the forehead is reliably covered and protected. The face protector I allows a person to additionally wear a 25 safety helmet, not shown. The safety goggles 4 comprise a viewing window 5 and an, in particular, elastic support band 6. Since the face protector 1 is fastened to the safety goggles 4, the person can put on the face protector 1 in one piece together 1 with the safety goggles 4, wear it and take it off again. The safety goggles 4 and the face protector 1 together form a compact and secure protection device. Since the face protector I is releasable from the safety goggles 4, it is possible to individually exchange faulty components. Damage to the 5 viewing window 5 of the safety goggles 4, the face protector upper part 2 and/or the face protector lower part 3 may, for example, take place because of impact from a stone. It is not necessary for the face protector I to be exchanged as a whole with the goggles 4. 10 A pivoting element 7 is provided in each case laterally on the face protector upper part 2. The pivoting elements 7 define a pivot axis 8, along which they are arranged. The face protector lower part 3 is pivotably articulated by means of the pivoting element 7 on the face protector upper part 2 about the pivot axis 8. 15 Fig. I shows a closed arrangement of the face protector, i.e. the face protector lower part 3 is not pivoted relative to the face protector upper part 2. In this position a pivoting angle between the face protector lower part 3 and the face protector upper part 2 is 00. In this arrangement, the face 20 protector lower part 3 and the face protector upper part 2 form an overall and, in particular, closed surface to protect the person. A maximally pivoted arrangement of the face protector lower part 3 on the face protector upper part 2 is shown in Fig. 2. In this arrangement, the face protector lower part 3 is pivoted through 60* with respect to the pivot axis 8. 25 Further details of the face protector 1 are described in more detail below with the aid of Fig. 1 to 6. The face protector 1 is adapted to the safety goggles 4. This means that an upper edge 9 of the face protector upper part 2 corresponds with the lower contour 10 of the safety goggles 4. To fasten 12 the face protector 1 to the face protector upper part 2 on the safety goggles 4, two first fastening elements are provided in the form of first fastening hooks 11, two second fastening elements in the form of second fastening hooks 12 and four third fastening elements in the form of fastening domes 5 13. The fastening elements 11, 12, 13 allow a secure fastening of the face protector 1 on the safety goggles 4. An unintentional release of the face protector 1 from the safety goggles 4 is made more difficult. The face protector upper part 2 can be fastened to the lower contour 10 of the safety goggles 4 by means of the fastening elements 11, 12, 13. 10 The two first fastening hooks 11 are arranged in a central region of the face protector upper part 2 and are used for attachment on a nose opening 14, which is configured substantially in a V-shape, of the lower contour 10 of the safety goggles 4. The first fastening hooks 11 in each case have a first 15 holding portion 15, which prevents a downward displacement of the face protector 1 on the safety goggles 4. The first fastening hooks I1 are formed on the face protector upper part 2 in such a way that the first holding portion 15 terminates flush with the upper edge 9. The first fastening hooks 11 in each case encompass the lower contour 10 of the safety goggles 4 and 20 are held on the lower contour 10 by the respective first holding portion 15, which rests from above on the lower contour 10. The first fastening hooks 11 are, in particular, connected in one piece to the face protector upper part 2, and in particular moulded on by injection moulding. 25 The second fastening hooks 12 are substantially identical to the first fastening hooks 11, a second holding portion 16 of the second fastening hooks 12 being oriented substantially vertically, and thus being used for securing against a lateral displacement of the face protector 1 on the safety 13 goggles 4. The second holding portions 16 in each case rest on a rear edge of the safety goggles 4. The fastening domes 13 are in each case arranged between a first fastening 5 hook I1 and a second fastening hook 12 along the upper edge 9. The fastening domes 13 extend from an inside of the face protector upper part 2 to the rear. The fastening domes 13 face the person. The fastening domes 13 are configured as conical or truncated cone-shaped mandrels or pegs. The fastening domes 13 are arranged below the lower edge 9 of the face 10 protector upper part 2 and engage below the lower contour 10 of the safety goggles 4. As a result, the fastening domes 13 secure an upward displacement of the face protector 1 on the safety goggles 4. The spacing of the fastening domes 13 from the upper edge 9 is adapted to the thickness of an edging of the viewing window 5 of the safety goggles 4 in such a way 15 that a secure fastening of the face protector I on the safety goggles 4 is ensured. The pivoting elements 7 are fastened laterally to the face protector upper part 2. The pivoting elements 7, and therefore the pivoting axis 8, are 20 arranged below the second fastening hooks 12. The pivot axis 8 is arranged below the upper edge 9 of the face protector upper part 2 and therefore below the safety goggles 4. Each pivoting element 7 comprises a holding plate 17, which is round in configuration with respect to the pivot axis 8. Four latching projections 38 for fastening the pivoting element 7 on the 25 face protector upper part 2 are provided on a rear side of the holding plate 17. The latching projections 13 are configured as snap-on hooks, so that the pivoting element 7 can be clipped into a receiver 19 corresponding thereto of the face protector upper part 2. The latching projections 38 are arranged in accordance with the receiver 19 in the form of a rectangle. The latching 14 projections 38 are used as an anti-rotation mechanism of the pivoting elements 7 on the face protector upper part 2 about the pivot axis 8. The pivoting element 7 is secured with respect to a rotation about the pivot axis 8. The holding plate 17 has a peg-shaped projection 18. The projection 18 5 is used, in particular, as a positioning aid during the assembly of the face protector 1. As a result, the pivoting element 7 is fixed in a clear and defined manner on the face protector upper part 2. A pin 20, which has a cross sectional face 35 oriented perpendicular to the 10 pivot axis 8, shown enlarged in Fig. 6, extends along the pivot axis 8 from a front side of the holding plate 17 arranged opposing the rear side. The cross sectional face 35 corresponds to a circle cross section with a diameter D, arc of a circle portions 36 and with flattened, in particular straight edges 37. The edges 37 are arranged opposing and in particular, arranged parallel 15 to one another with a vertical spacing A. The pin 20 connects the holding plate 17 to a latching arm 21 extending transversely and in particular perpendicularly from the pivot axis 8. A latching projection 22, which faces the face protector upper part 2, is 20 provided spaced apart from the pivot axis 8 and, in particular oriented parallel to the pivot axis 8 on the latching arm 21. For the pivotable arrangement of the face protector lower part 3 on the pivoting element 7, the face protector lower part 3 has a pivoting recess 23, 25 which substantially has the shape of a keyhole. The pivoting recess 23 has a pivoting portion 24, which is round at least in portions, for pivoting on the pin 20 and an assembly portion 25 connected to the pivoting portion 24 to assemble and disassemble the face protector lower part 3 on the face protector upper part 2. The width of the assembly portion 25 is reduced 15 compared to the diameter of the pivoting portion 24. The diameter of the pivoting portion 24 substantially corresponds to the diameter D of the round portion of the pin 20. The width of the assembly portion 25 corresponds to the vertical spacing A of the edges 37. 5 Five latching recesses 27 are arranged on an end face 26 of the face protector lower part 3. The latching projection 22 may be arranged in a latching manner on one of the latching recesses 27, in each case, so the face protector lower part 3 is locked in a pivoting position relative to the 10 face protector upper part 2. Two adjacent latching recesses 27 are in each case separated from one another by a latching elevation 28 arranged in between. The latching elevations 28 may have straight or curved flanks toward the latching recesses 27. The latching recesses 27 are arranged on the end face 26 in such a way that the face protector lower part 3 on the 15 face protector upper part 2 can be pivoted between a closed position according to Fig. 1, a so-called 00 position, and a maximally pivoted position according to Fig. 2, a position rotated with respect to the pivot axis 8 through 600. Between the two pivoting positions mentioned, a 15', 30*, and 450 pivoting position are possible. In total, the face protector lower 20 part 3 has five latching recesses 27 arranged equidistantly along the end face 26, which accordingly allow five different pivoting positions of the face protector lower part 3. More or less than five latching recesses 27 are also possible. The angular spacing between the latching recesses 27 may be different from 15'. It is possible for the latching recesses 27 to not be 25 arranged equidistantly from one another. Four, in particular identically configured, ventilation openings 29 are provided on the face protector lower part 3. The ventilation openings 29 allow a supply of air from an outer environment to the face section 16 protected by the face protector 1. The ventilation openings 29 in each case have a substantially trapezoidal cross sectional area 30. The cross sectional faces 30 of the ventilation openings in total comprise an area content for 2 the supply of air of 860 mm . It is advantageous if the total cross sectional 5 face is at least 600 mm 2 and in particular at least 750 mm 2 . The ventilation openings 29 are formed in one piece on the face protector lower part 3. Each ventilation opening 29 has a cover 31, which prevents dirt and/or dust arriving via the cross sectional area 30 through the ventilation opening 29 into the region protected by the face protector 1. The cover 31 is 10 configured in such a way that, in particular, dust and/or dirt particles encountering the face protector I from the front are kept away from the ventilation opening 29. In particular, the cross sectional area 30 of the ventilation opening 29 has a surface normal, which is oriented substantially tangentially with respect to a surface 32 of the face protector lower part 3. 15 The face protector upper part 2 has a nose shaping 33, a perpendicular nose spacing from the nose of a person wearing the face protector 1 to an inside of the face protector 1 being 18 mm. It is advantageous if the nose spacing is at least 12 mm and in particular at least 15 mm. 20 The face protector lower part 3 has a jaw shaping 34, a perpendicular jaw spacing from the lower jaw or the chin of a person wearing the face protector 1 to the inside of the face protector 1 being 48 mm. It is advantageous if the jaw spacing is at least 40 mm and in particular at least 25 42 mm. The assembly of the face protector 1 and its subsequent fastening to the safety goggles 4 will be described below. Firstly, the pivoting elements 7 are in each case pressed and clipped by the latching projections 38 into the 17 receivers 19 provided for this in the face protector upper part 2. The face protector lower part 3 is then pivoted relative to the face protector upper part 2 and therefore relative to the pivoting elements 7 in such a way that the side edges of the assembly portion 25 of the pivoting recess 23 are 5 oriented parallel to the edges 37. In this arrangement, the face protector lower part 3 can be pushed with the pivoting recess 23 onto the pin 20. As soon as the pin 20 is arranged in the pivoting portion 24 of the pivoting recess 23, the face protector lower part 3 can be pivoted downwardly on the face protector upper part 2 into the 0' pivoting position. For assembly, 10 i.e. the pushing of the face protector lower part 3 onto the pin 20 of the pivoting element 7, the face protector lower part 3 is pivoted upwardly in such a way that it projects over the upper edge 9. This means that the face protector lower part 3 would collide with the safety goggles 4 if the latter were connected to the face protector 1. Accordingly, the assembly of the 15 face protector 1, in other words the attaching of the face protector lower part 3 to the pivoting element 7, is only possible when the face protector 1 is separated from the safety goggles 4. This means that an unintentional disassembly of the face protector lower part 3 from the face protector upper part 2 is prevented as long as the face protector 1 is connected to the safety 20 goggles 4. In the assembled state, the safety goggles 4 are additional security against unintentional disassembly of the face protector 1. The assembled face protector 1 is fastened to the safety goggles 4 in such a way that the first fastening hooks 11 encompass the lower contour 10 and 25 the second fastening hooks 12 encompass a rear edge of the flexible goggle body and prevent a displacement of the face protector 1 to the side and downward. At the same time, the fastening domes 13 guarantee that the face protector 1 cannot be pushed upwardly and released from the safety 18 goggles 4. Thus, the face protector 1 is securely fastened to the safety goggles 4.
