Abstract

A fishing rod holder formed to a shape from wire or metal rod to support the butt end of a fishing rod. The rod holder base [1] is formed and attached to the mounting [4] by means of welds [5]. The mounting [4] slips onto the grab / handrail with two legs [8] which rest against the gunwales [9]. A holding pin [10] is also attached to the rod holder [1] and is inserted to prevent removal from the grab / handrail

Description

1 Title: Fishing Rod Holder BACKGROUND OF INVENTION [0001] This invention relates to fishing rod holders. [0002] This invention provides a fishing rod holder for mounting on the grab / handrail of a boat [0003] This invention has particular application to fishing rod holders for use with aluminum boats or boats with an acceptable grab / handrail and the following description will make reference to such application. However, aspects of this invention may be applied to other types of recreational fishing vessels. Boats are often fitted with fishing rod holders that attach to the gunwale or grab / handrail of the boat.
2 [0004] Existing fishing rod holders are typically provided with mounting brackets that are screwed to the hull or gunwale of the boat or are otherwise clamped to a convenient tubular support such as a grab / handrail. Furthermore, once the rod holder has been positioned it cannot be readily re-positioned without drilling further mounting holes or removing a clamp like device. This invention aims to alleviate the foregoing disadvantages and to provide a rod holder that will be efficient in use for both sides of the boat. Most aluminum boats are welded together from formed aluminum sheets and have side panels that terminate in a flange along their upper edge. An extruded open C or G section side rail is welded to the uppermost flange to form a strengthening gunwale around the upper edge of the hull in which a grab /handrail is welded. [0005] This invention, the fishing rod holder, has been devised to co-operate with most grab / handrails that are welded to the gunwales or similar rail to provide ready attachment and detachment thereto, without the need to unclamp and re-clamp or the removing of screws and re drilling of holes to attach the rod holder in a new position. This invention in one aspect resides in a fishing rod holder having a mounting that slips over the grab / handrail, with two rods resting against the gunwale that prevents the rod holder from rotating downwards, and a holding pin that passes between a loop and the grab / handrail 3 [0006] In order that this invention may be more readily understood and put into practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which illustrate typical embodiments of the invention, and wherein: 4 DESCRIPTION [0001] Figure 1: Is a side view of the rod holder mounted on a grab / handrail showing the holding pin inserted. [0002] Figure 2: Is the rear view of the rod holder mounted on a grab / handrail with holding pin. [0003] Figure 3: Is a three-dimension drawing. [0004] Referring to figure 1: It will be seen that the rod holder base [1] is a formed wire shape with a front end 1/2 loop [2] bent down and a rear end 1/2 loop [3] bent upwards to form the holding mount for a fishing rod butt. [0005] The rod holder base [1] is attached to the rail mount [4] by welding a bonding joint [5]. [0006] The rail mount [4] is formed to suit the grab / handrail [6] outside diameter with a minimal of gap [7] between the grab / handrail [6] and the rail mount [4], the rail mount [4] slips onto the grab / handrail [6] and two long rods [8] rest against the gunwale [9] to prevent the rail mount [4] from rotating downward.
5 [0007] A holding pin [10] is formed wire with a circular or tear drop shape [11] and attached around the rear end 1/2 loop [3]. The length of the holding pin [10] from the formed circular or tear drop [11] is determined by the distance between the rear end 1/2 loop [3] and the rear 1/ loop [12] on the rail mount [4]. [0008] The holding pin [10] is shown between the grab / handrail [6] and the rear 1/ loop [12]. [0009] Referring to figure 2: Shows the front end 1/2 loop [2], rear end 1/2 loop [3] the holding pin [10] attached to the rear end 1/2 loop [3], the rear end 1/2 loop [12] 6 [0010] In order for the holding pin [10] to pass over the rear end M/ loop [12] to be inserted between the rear end %/ loop [12] and the grab rail [6] to hold the fishing rod holder to the grab / handrail [6] it needs to slide up the rear end /2 loop [3] to be at the near center of the rear end 2 loop [3] to pass over the rear %/ loop [12] to be inserted, thus holding the rod holder [1] from being able to be removed from grab rail [6], with. the rail mount [4] being made to an minimal gap and the holding pin (10] once inserted, which is thicker than the gap [7] in which this prevents the rod holder [10 ) from being able to be removed. [0011] Referring to figure 3: Is shown in a third dimension. The grab / handrail [6] and the gunwale [9) are dashed

Claims (5)

1. A fishing rod holder formed to a shape to support the butt end of a fishing rod having a U shape mounting that slips onto the grab/ handrail of a boat comprising of two long rods that rest against the gunwale of a boat to stop the rod holder from rotating downwards and a holding pin to lock the fishing rod holder to the rail.
2. The fishing rod holder according to claim 1, where in use the rod holder U shape mounting is slipped onto the grab / handrail and locks on using the holding pin.
3. The fishing rod holder according to claim 1 or 2, where in use the holding pin prevents the fishing rod holder U shape mount from coming off the grab / handrail.
4. The fishing rod holder according to any of claims I to 3, where said the holding pin is inserted between the grab / handrail and the rod holder mounting for locking the rod holder to the grab / handrail.
5. The fishing rod holder according to claims 1 to 4, where said the holding pin being a material of a solid state or a metal / wire rod.
