Abstract

The disclosed Circlip Plier consists of a housing (1) in which two arms (2) are pivoted and having a tapered wedge (3), actuated by a screw (4) which in a forward motion, forces the ends of the inner pivoted arms (2) apart, thus bringing the outer ends of the arms (2) together. The inner ends of the arms (2) are fitted with rollers, and the outer ends with replaceable and reversible fingers (6), which are shaped to engage in the holes of the circlip, and further shaped to prevent the circlip from slipping off. The outer end of the screw (4) has a hexagon form to accept a socket spanner engaging with the actuation device, viz. Hand wrench or pneumatic or electrical nut runner. Further forward movement of the screw (4) and wedge (3) causes the internal Circlip to contract, withdrawing it from its retaining groove, thus facilitating removal. p J7

Description

1. IMPROVEMENT TO CIRCLIP PLIERS. The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me. This invention relates to the removing of very strong internal circlips used in automatic automobile transmissions. The usual method is to use a long handled conventional type circlip plier, which requires considerable strength on the part of the user to operate. This invention can be actuated either by a hand wrench, but is preferably actuated by a pneumatic or electrical nut runner. The construction of the invention consists of a housing (1) in which two arms (2) are pivoted and having a tapered wedge (3), rotateably attached to one end of the screw (8), which when activated by the screw (4) in forward motion, forces the inner ends of the pivoted arms (2) apart, thus bringing the outer ends of the arms together. The inner ends of the arms are fitted with rollers (5) and the outer ends are fitted with replaceable and reversible fingers, which are shaped at the ends to engage in the holes in the circlips, and further shaped to prevent the circlips slipping off, which could cause damage or injury. The outer end of the screw (4) has a hexagon form (7) to accept a socket spanner engaging with the actuation device viz. Hand wrench, or pneumatic or electrical nut runner. A small compression spring (9) is inserted between the arms (2) to maintain the arms in contact with the tapered wedge (3) when the screw is reversed to enable the retraction of the tapered wedge (3), and disengagement from the circlip. Therefore the removal and replacement of these large strong internal circlips becomes very fast and very safe.

Claims (4)

  1. 2. CLAIMS 1. A Circlip Plier having a housing (1) accommadating two pivoting arms (2), a screw (4) and a tapered wedge (3). 2. A circlip plier as claimed in claim 1 wherein the pivoting arms (2) are fitted with replaceable fingers (6).
  2. 3. A circlip plier as claimed in claims 1 & 2 wherein the replaceable fingers (6) are shaped to prevent the circlip from slipping off, which would cause damage of injury.
  3. 4. A circlip plier as in clause 1, 2, & 3, wherein a tapered wedge is rotateably attached (8) to one end of the screw.(3).
  4. 5. A circlip plier substantially as herein described, with reference to the accompanying drawing attached. Figure 1.
