Description

2 IMPROVEMENTS TO PERSONAL BAGS Technical Field This invention relates to improvements to personal bags. In a particular aspect, the present invention relates to carrying bags such as women's handbags or tote bags however 5 it may be applied to other bags to be carried or worn by a person such as backpacks, rucksacks or knapsacks or shoulder, sports or babies bags. Background Art Handbags as commonly used by women are of many different designs and styles. A disadvantage of the currently available handbags however is that they do not have any 10 facility for holding bottles such as water bottles or other similar containers. Consequently women who wish to carry bottled water or other drinks have to carry those drink bottles or containers separately. This is inconvenient and furthermore drink bottles carried separately tend to rapidly heat up and thus causing the contents to become unpalatable often necessitating the contents of the bottle to be discarded resulting in wastage. 15 An alternative is to carry a drink bottle or container loosely in a handbag however this is often undesirable as a loose bottle or container can physically damage the contents of the handbag. Furthermore there is a risk of leakage of liquid from the drink bottle or container or condensation around the drink bottle or container and this may result in damage to the interior of the handbag or the contents thereof. Furthermore carrying a drink 20 bottle or container within a handbag does not overcome the problem of heating of the cold contents of the bottle or container as referred to above. Whilst a number of carriers are available which facilitate carrying of drink bottles or containers such as soft or hard walled insulated containers which maintain or substantially maintain bottles or containers in a chilled or cooled state, those carriers tend 25 to be relatively bulky. A user wishing to carry a chilled or cooled drink is then required to carry not only a handbag but a drink carrier which is obviously inconvenient. Similar disadvantages to that described above apply to other forms of personal bags such as backpacks or sports bags. People using such bags often are undertaking recreational or sports activities and it is often desirable and sometimes essential in these 30 circumstances to have a ready available source of water preferably cold water such as a bottle of water for rehydration purposes. Toddlers or children also often carry backpacks for school or other purposes and carry loosely in those backpacks juice bottles or containers. In both of the above situations, currently available bags or backpacks do not 3 have a convenient and safe means to enable the carrying of such bottles or containers within the bag or backpack. Further situation in which liquid containers are carried in personal bags are baby bags in which bottles of milk are carried. Currently available bags do not have a facility 5 for the effective carrying of such bottles and preserving the contents of such bottles at a required temperature. Similar problems to that described above arise if a person wishes to carry a warm or hot drink container or other container. Summary of the Invention 10 The present invention aims to provide a personal bag which overcomes or alleviates one or more of the above disadvantages or at least provide an effective alternative to the prior art. In particular, the present invention aims to provide a personal bag in which a drink bottle or other container can be conveniently carried. The present invention further aims in a preferred aspect to provide a personal bag in which cold drink 15 bottles or containers in a personal bag can be maintained or substantially maintained for at least a reasonable period of time in a chilled or cooled state. The term "personal bag" as referred to above and throughout the specification includes handbags or any other form of bag to be worn or carried by a person such as a tote bags, baby bags, sports bags, shoulder bags, backpacks, rucksacks or knapsacks. Other objects and advantages of the 20 invention will become apparent from the following description. The present invention thus provides in one preferred aspect, a personal bag having at least one internal compartment, a bottle or container holder assembly within said compartment for holding a drink bottle or other container, and an insert adapted to be associated with said holder assembly to assist in maintaining the temperature of the 2 5 contents of said bottle or other container held in use within said holder assembly. Typically the insert is adapted to be located in use at one side of the bottle or container. Alternatively, the insert may at least partially encircle or enclose the bottle or container. Typically the bottle or container holder assembly comprises a holder assembly 30 configured to accommodate the bottle or container, Thus for a cylindrical bottle or container, the container assembly suitably comprises a substantially cylindrical holder assembly. Alternatively the holder assembly may comprise a holder assembly which can be unfolded from a collapsed substantially flat attitude to an erected or unfolded attitude 4 in which it can accommodate the bottle or container. The holder assembly is open at at least one end to enable the bottle or container to be inserted therein. Suitably the holder assembly includes a chamber for receiving the insert. The chamber may be located to one side of the holder assembly or may be positioned relative 5 to the holder assembly to at least partially encircle or enclosed a bottle or container held in use in the holder assembly. In the former configuration, the chamber may be of slot like configuration and therefore of rectangular cross section in sectional view. In the latter configuration, the chamber suitably comprises a chamber of at least part annular cross section for receiving the insert. The chambers are open at at least one end to 10 enable the insert to be received neatly therein. The insert comprises an envelope of liquid impervious material typically plastics which contains water and/or a gel or liquid. The water may be frozen to form ice or alternatively the gel and/or liquid may be such as to freeze at a lower temperature than water. Devices known in the art as cold/hot packs may be used as the inserts and may 15 comprise a plurality of envelopes or pouches containing the water, liquid and/or gel. Alternatively where the insert is used for maintaining the heat in a bottle or container such as a hot liquid or foodstuff, the insert may include a heatable heat storage material such as a granular material. Alternatively insert may include a gel and/or liquid which may be heated to store heat for an extended period of time. An insert of this type 20 may be heated in a microwave container or oven or may be heated by another heat source. In an embodiment where the chamber for receiving the insert is of an annular or part annular configuration, the holder assembly may comprise an outer body which suitably is of a generally cylindrical configuration at least on its inner surface and an inner sleeve or cylindrical body which defines with the outer body the annular or part annular chamber, the 25 bottle or container being adapted to be received within the inner sleeve or cylindrical body. Suitably the outer body is formed of an insulating material, Suitably the inner body is formed of a heat transmitting material such that a bottle or container within the sleeve or inner cylindrical body is exposed to the cooling or heating effect of the cold/hot pack insert. 30 In another embodiment, the holder assembly may comprise an outer body which suitably is of a generally cylindrical or part cylindrical configuration at least on its inner surface and which is adapted to receive the bottle or container and a slot-like chamber within the outer body adapted to receive the insert. The material of the outer body may 5 comprise an insulating material. Preferably the slot-like chamber is defined on one side by a panel of heat transmitting material which is adapted in use to be located adjacent to the bottle or container. The other side of the chamber may comprise an insulating material such as the material of the outer body. 5 Preferably the holder assembly is adapted to be located in an upright attitude in the personal bag. The holder assembly however may disposed in other orientations. The personal bag may have at least one internal divider or panel and the holder assembly may be attached to the divider or be formed at least partially integrally therewith. The holder assembly however may be attached internally to any other part of the personal 10 bag. Further in some embodiments, the holder assembly may be detachably engaged with the personal bag by any suitably releasable fastening means for example touch and grip or hook and loop material or mechanical fastenings. Brief Description of the Drawings In order that the invention may be more readily understood and put into practical 15 effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention. The embodiment is described in relation to a handbag of a particularly design however it will be appreciated handbags are of numerous design and the present invention may be applied to handbags of all designs and all other forms or personal bags as referred to above. In the drawings: 20 Fig. 1 illustrates a handbag according to an embodiment of the invention incorporating a holder assembly for holding a drink bottle or other container; Fig. 2 is an exploded view showing the relationship between a drink bottle, a cold pack insert and holder assembly of the handbag; Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section a view in the direction A-A of Fig. 2 through the 25 holder assembly showing the relationship between the a drink bottle and cold pack insert within the handbag; Fig. 4 is an exploded view showing the relationship between a drink bottle, a cold pack insert and holder assembly of the handbag according to a further embodiment of the invention; 30 Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross sectional view in the direction B-B of Fig. 4 through the holder assembly showing the relationship between the a drink bottle and a cold pack insert within the handbag 6 Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments Referring to the drawings and firstly to Fig. 1, there is illustrated a handbag 10 which externally has a conventional appearance and which has opposite major side panels 11, a carrying handle 12, an upper normally closed access opening 13 defined 5 between the upper edges of the side panels 11 and a releasable latch 14 which when released allows the side panels 11 of the handbag 10 to be moved apart to open the opening 13 and provide access to a storage compartment 15 within the handbag 10. The term "handbag" as used herein includes any container which is typically used by women for carrying money and small personal items or accessories and which typically but not 10 necessarily includes short straps which enable carrying of the bag by hand. The handbag 10 in this embodiment includes as is common a divider panel 16 which may be arranged centrally in the compartment 15 (shown in dotted outline), the divider panel 16 extending in the same direction as the side panels 15 and separating the compartment 15 in this embodiment into two sub- compartments. The divider panel 16 15 may also incorporate a purse or alternatively may comprise two panels which are joined along the sides and closed at their upper edges by zip fastener also as to define a further storage compartment between the side panels 11 The handbag 10 in accordance with the invention includes a holder assembly 17 (also shown in dotted outline in Fig 1) which in this embodiment is attached to the 20 central divider panel 16 adjacent one end thereof. The holder assembly 17 is adapted in this embodiment to hold a drink bottle 18 or other container in an upright attitude within the handbag 10 however the holder assembly 17 may be positioned in an orientation at right-angles to the illustrated orientation. The holder assembly 17 as more clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 include an outer 25 hollow cylindrical body 18 which is preferably formed of a material which provides some insulating properties so as to prevent or reduce condensation of moisture externally on the surface of the body 18. A suitably material for the body 18 may comprise a neoprene rubber however other materials may be used for the body 18. The cylindrical body 18 is closed at its lower end by a disc-shaped base member 19 which is typically 30 secured to the cylindrical body 18 by adhesives such that the cylindrical body 18 is sealed at its lower end whilst it is open at its upper end. The body 18 is attached at one side along its length to the divider panel 16 for example by adhesives or mechanical fastening arrangement such as rivets or studs. The mechanical fastening arrangement .7 may further comprise a detachable fastening arrangement such as press studs or hook and loop material or touch and grip material such as that known under the trade mark Velcro which enables the holder assembly 17 to be detached from the panel 16. The holder assembly 17 further includes an inner cylindrical sleeve 20 which is 5 coaxial with the outer cylindrical body 18 and which is of substantially the same or of slightly greater internal diameter than the diameter of a bottle 18 to be held within the holder assembly 17. The sleeve 20 is also preferably secured such as by adhesives to the base member 19. The sleeve 20 is formed of a heat conducting material. A typical material which may be used for the sleeve 20 is an aluminium based material however 10 the sleeve 20 may be formed of any other suitably pliable fabric material. The sleeve 20 may also be provided at its upper end with an elasticized or resilient band 21 which is either incorporated in the sleeve 20 or which is attached to the sleeve 20. An annular chamber 22 is formed between the body 18 and sleeve 20 and is adapted to receive an insert hot or cold pack 23. The pack 23 include a plurality of 15 pouches 24 which contain a liquid, gel or combination thereof, the pouches 24 being arranged in columns separated by integrally formed longitudinal seal lines 25 which form live hinges which enable the respective pouch columns to be pivoted relative to each other such that the pack 23 can adopt a substantially hollow cylindrical configuration as shown which is of a diameter and thickness such that it may be neatly 20 received within the annular chamber 22 in the manner shown in Fig. 3. In use and where a cool drink is to be carried in the handbag 10, the insert pack 23 is placed within a freezer for a sufficient time for the liquid/gel in the pouches to freeze. The cold pack 23 when sufficiently frozen is inserted into the annular chamber 22 and the bottle 18 containing the drink is inserted into the sleeve 20. The bottle 18 25 will be held firmly in position by the elastic neck or band 21 such that it will remain in position until it is grasped and pulled from the holder assembly 17 when for example a drink is required. The drink bottle 18 may then be reinserted into the sleeve 20 so that it is exposed to the chilling or cooling effect of the cold insert pack 23. As the body 18 is formed of an insulating material, the cold insert pack 23 will maintain its effectiveness 30 for a considerable period of time during the day. Referring now to Figs. 4 and 5, there is illustrated an alternative configuration of drink holder assembly 26 according to another embodiment of the invention, the holder assembly 26 in this case including an outer cylindrical or part cylindrical hollow body 27 8 formed of an insulating material such as neoprene rubber or the like as referred to above which is secured to the divider panel 16. A panel 28 of heat conducting material is located within the body 28 and extends substantially parallel to the plane of the divider panel 16 such as to define therewith a slot-like chamber 29 of rectangular cross-section 5 at the rear of the body 28. Alternatively an additional panel 30 of insulating material may be located at the rear of the body 27 with the chamber 29 being defined between the panels 28 and 30. The chamber 20 is adapted to receive a cold pack 31 which in this case is of a substantially rectangular configuration and which includes a plurality of pouches 32 10 similar to the pouches 24 which contain a refrigerant gel or liquid. The cold pack 31 is of a width, length and thickness such that it may be received neatly within the chamber 20. As with the embodiment of Figs. 2 and 3, where a cool drink is to be carried in the handbag 10, the cold pack 31 is placed within a freezer and when sufficiently frozen, 15 it is inserted into the slot- like chamber 29. A bottle 18 is then inserted into the body 27 so as to be located adjacent the panel 28 and thus the cold pack 31 and therefore be subject to the cooling effect thereof. To facilitate removal of the insert packs 23 and 30 from their respective chambers 22 and 29, they may be provided with gripping tabs or the like 33 and 34 (as 20 shown in dotted outline in Figs. 2 and 4) which can be grasped by hand for lifting of the insert packs 22 and 30 out of their chambers 22 and 29. It will be appreciated that the holder assemblies may be varied in design and construction from that illustrated and described. Whilst it is preferred that the components of the holder assemblies are of a pliable material so that they may be 25 flattened or collapsed when not in use, the components of the holder assemblies may be formed of a rigid or semi-rigid material. In addition the bottles or containers used in the bags may be readily available bottles or containers or may be designed to suit the bag with which they are to be used. For example, in certain handbags, conventional bottles or containers may be too tall and 30 therfore a shorter wider rectangular container may be used with this type of handbag. The bottles or containers used may also contain any liquid such as water, juice, milk or any other liquid or consumable foodstuff. The terms "comprising" or "comprises" as used throughout the specification and 9 claims are taken to specify the presence of the stated features, integers and components referred to but not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other feature/s, integer/s, component/s or group thereof. Whilst the above has been given by way of illustrative embodiment of the 5 invention, all such variations and modifications thereto as would be apparent to persons skilled in the art are deemed to fall within the broad scope and ambit of the invention as herein described.
