Description

WO 2009/111835 PCT/AU2009/000297 A DEVICE FOR LIFTING Field of the Invention 5 The present invention relates to a device for lifting articles. In particular, although not solely, the present invention relates to a device used for the lifting of articles such as wear plates. 10 Background of the Invention Wear plates are used extensively in the mining industry for lining receptacles for transporting minerals. Wear plates are often thick and made from inherently hard material so as 15 to be resistant to wearing caused by the repetitious nature of material being passed across the surface of the plate. Due to the weight of the wear plates, it is often extremely difficult to manually position replacement plates without the aid of a lifting device. 20 It is to be understood that, if any prior art publication(s) or use(s) is referred to herein, such references do not constitute an admission that the publication(s) or use(s) forms a part of the common general knowledge in the art, in 25 Australia or any other country. Summary of the Invention In the claims which follow and in the preceding description 30 of the invention, except where the context requires otherwise due to express language or necessary implication, the word "comprise" or variations such as "comprises" or "comprising" is used in an inclusive sense, i.e. to specify WO 2009/111835 PCT/AU2009/000297 2 the presence of the stated features but not to preclude the presence or addition of further features in various embodiments of the invention. 5 According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a coupling device for engagement with an article having an aperture of a certain size formed therein, said device comprising: a body having a first portion configured to pass 10 through at least a portion of said aperture and a second portion coupled to said first portion; an expandable portion coupled to said first portion so as to pass substantially through said aperture with said first portion, 15 wherein said expandable portion is operable to expand so as to engage with said article thereby enabling said article to be lifted when said second portion is lifted. In one embodiment the body comprises a loop for coupling 20 to a lifting means. The loop may be part of or connectable to the second portion of the body. In another embodiment the body comprises an engaging surface that engages the article. In this embodiment, the 25 engaging surface is too large to fully pass through the aperture. In one embodiment, the second portion of the body comprises the engaging surface. In a further embodiment the device comprises an activator 30 for expanding the expandable portion. In one embodiment the activator is positioned relative to the body so as to not pass through the aperture.
WO 2009/111835 PCT/AU2009/000297 3 In a further embodiment, the expandable portion is contractible so as to contract, allowing the expandable portion to be withdrawn from the aperture. 5 In another embodiment, the activator is arranged to contract the expandable portion. In one embodiment, the expandable portion may comprise a 10 region internal to the body. In another embodiment, the activator may comprise a shank configured to be operatively associated with said expandable portion through said internal region. 15 In one embodiment the expandable portion may further comprise at least one engaging element. Preferably there are two or three engaging elements. 20 The activator may have an external thread that is configured to be engagable with a complimentary internal thread within the internal region of the body near the second end. In one embodiment each engaging elements is spherical. 25 The internal region of the body may comprise a portion that is substantially uniform in cross-section and substantially concentric with a longitudinal axis of the body. The region of uniform cross-section may extend from the second end of 30 the body to the region internal of the first end of the body. In another embodiment, the internal region at a first WO 2009/111835 PCT/AU2009/000297 4 portion of the body may configured so that the at least one engaging element is displaced in a direction substantially radial to the longitudinal axis so as to extend at least a portion of the or each engaging element outward of the body 5 to engage the article to be lifted. In this embodiment, the at least a portion of the or each engaging element effectively protrudes beyond the extremity of the first portion of the body so as to engage or catch a portion of the article. The engagement inhibits the first portion of 10 the body from passing back through the aperture so as to retain the first portion from exiting back through the aperture of the article, allowing the article to be lifted when the second portion of the body is lifted. 15 In another embodiment the first portion of said body may comprise a separate component that is configured to be engagable with the body. In a further embodiment, the activator is operable so as to 20 translate the shank portion through the internal region of the body in a direction substantially aligned with the longitudinal axis so as to engage at least one engaging element. 25 In another embodiment, a coupling may be engaged to the second portion of the body so as to couple the body to a lifting device. The lifting device may, for example, comprise a prime-mover operatively associated with a suspension means such as a cable and/or rope for engagement 30 with the coupling for lifting. In an embodiment the engaging surface is frustoconcially shaped. In an embodiment the frustoconical shape of the WO 2009/111835 PCT/AU2009/000297 5 engaging surface is substantially uniform in slope around the surface. In an embodiment the angle of the slope is suitable for engagement with articles having a range of thicknesses proximal to the aperture, where the aperture of 5 the article is a frustoconcially shaped hole. In another embodiment the position of the first portion is movable relative to the position of the second portion. 10 According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a coupling device for engagement with an article having an aperture of a certain size formed therein, said device comprising: a body having a first portion configured to pass 15 through at least a portion of said aperture; an expandable portion coupled to said body so as to pass substantially through said aperture with said first portion, wherein the expandable portion is operable to expand, 20 wherein, when said expandable portion is expanded so said body is retained within said aperture by engagement of the expanded expandable portion with said article so that a second portion of the body may be lifted thereby lifting the article. 25 According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a method for lifting an article having an aperture of a certain size formed therein, said method comprising the steps of: 30 providing a coupling device as hereinbefore described; passing said first portion of said coupling device substantially through at least a portion of said aperture; expanding said expanding portion so as to be engagable WO 2009/111835 PCT/AU2009/000297 6 with said article so that said article may be lifted from said second portion of said body. According to a fourth aspect of the present invention there 5 is provided a method of lifting an article having an aperture of a certain size formed therein, said method comprising: passing a first portion of a body of a coupling device through at least a portion of said aperture so that an 10 expandable portion of said first portion passes substantially through said aperture; expanding said expandable portion so as to engage with said article thereby enabling said article to be lifted when a second portion of the body is lifted. 15 Brief Description of the Drawings The preferred embodiments of the present invention will 20 now the described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows one embodiment of a coupling device in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 shows a partial cross-section view of one 25 coupling device shown in Figure 1 when in an expanded condition; Figure 3 shows a partial cross-section view of the coupling device shown in Figures 1 and 2 when in a contracted condition; 30 Figure 4 shows a front elevation view of a head portion in accordance with the embodiments shown in Figures 1 to 3; Figure 5 shows a front elevation view of a handle portion in accordance with the embodiment shown in Figures 1 WO 2009/111835 PCT/AU2009/000297 7 to 3; Figure 6 shows a front elevation view of a body portion in accordance with the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 3; and 5 Figure 7 shows an embodiment the coupling device of Figure 1 used to lift an alternative form of article. Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments of the Invention 10 With reference to Figures 1 to 3, there is shown one embodiment of a coupling device 2 for engaging an article 4 that is to be lifted. The coupling device 2 comprises a body 6 having a first portion 8 configured to pass through 15 at least a portion of an aperture 10 formed within the article 4. The aperture may be a through hole as in the case of Figure 1 or it could be a blind hole of suitable shape to receive the first portion 8 as in the case of Figure 7. The device 2 further comprises an expandable portion 12 coupled 20 to the body 6 so as to pass substantially through the aperture 10 with the first portion 8. The expandable portion 12 is operable to expand so as to allow the first portion 8 to engage with the article 4 thereby enabling the article to be lifted at a second portion 14 of the body 6 25 when the second portion 14 is to be lifted. In particular in the embodiment of Figure 1, the expandable portion engages a surface surrounding an opening to the aperture 10. With reference to Figure 2, the embodiment of the coupling 30 device 2 is presented with the article 4 omitted whereby the expandable portion 12 of the coupling device is shown in an expanded condition 13. In the embodiment shown, the expandable portion 12 comprises two spherically shaped WO 2009/111835 PCT/AU2009/000297 8 engaging elements 16a, 16b that are movable within a region of space 18 that is internal of the first portion 8 of the body 6. In an embodiment the space 18 is in the form of a channel through the first portion 8. The channel extends 5 transverse to a longitudinal exit 20 of body 6. The region of space 18 of the first portion 8 is configured so that engaging elements 16a, 16b are movable so that at least a portion of each of the engaging elements 16a, 16b is 10 able to project outward from the first portion 8. In the embodiment of the coupling device 2 shown in Figures 1 to 4, both engaging elements 16a, 16b are movable within the region of space 18 in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis 20 of the body 6 (and preferably 15 substantially radially relative to the longitudinal axis of the body 6). The region of space 18 is configured so that each engaging element 16a, 16b may project, when moved outwardmost, a portion thereof beyond the extremity of the first portion 8 of the body 6. In the current embodiment, 20 the region of space 18 comprises an channel 35 configured to pass through the first portion 8 at an orientation that is substantially orthogonal to the longitudinal axis 20. The outward facing surface of the first portion 8 is configured with shaped side portions 36a, 36b substantially centred 25 about an axis 38 (shown in Figure 4) of channel 35. It will be appreciated that in the current embodiment, the shaped surfaces 36a, 36b are appropriately shaped in accordance with the geometry of the engaging elements 16a, 16b to be able to retain said engaging elements 16a, 16b, yet allow a 30 sufficient portion thereof to protrude outward of the first portion 8 to engage the article 4. When the expanded portion 12 is in an expanded condition 13, WO 2009/111835 PCT/AU2009/000297 9 each engagable element 16a, 16b is able to engage a lowermost surface 22 of the article 4 so as to inhibit the first portion 8 of the body 6 from retreating backward through the aperture 10 of the article 4. Accordingly, the 5 article 4 may be then lifted from the body 6, or any portion thereof, using any known lifting means in the art. Alternatively, any lifting means or like prime mover may be connected to a coupling, such as a lifting bar 24, that may itself be coupled to the second portion 14 of the body 6. 10 The lifting bar 24 preferably has an eye hole 90 or loop for receiving a hook or the like at the end of a cable or rope that is able to be lifted or lowered by the prime-mover. 15 The first portion 12 of the body 6 further comprises a stop 64 having a taper region 9 near the expandable portion 12 comprising a frustoconical shaped outward facing surface. In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 4, the external surface adjacent the expandable portion 12 comprises a 20 cross-section in which the diameter linearly increases outward as a function of distance towards the second portion 14 of the body 6. The width of the lowermost region 7 (narrowest portion) of the taper region 9 is such that it does not exceed a dimension that is commensurate with the 25 widest offering of the expandable portion 12 when in an expanded condition 13. Following, the increase in the cross-sectional diameter continues and terminates at a widermost region 70 (widest part) of the stop 64. The effect of the increase in diameter is to prevent the 30 coupling 2 from being able to completely pass through the aperture 10. The aperture 10 within the article 4 may be similarly WO 2009/111835 PCT/AU2009/000297 10 configured with an internal facing surface 11 that is complementary to the geometry of the taper region 9 so as the external surface of the taper region 9, and the internal surface 11 of the aperture 10, may contact or engage so as 5 to locate the coupling 2 within the aperture 10. It will be appreciated that the complementary nature of the mutual engagement of surfaces 11, 9 provides for increased contact surface area that would not otherwise be possible with a conventional vertically formed aperture. Furthermore, the 10 frustoconical nature of the taper region 9 allows the coupling device 2 to snugly engage with an aperture comprising geometrically shaped internal surfacing complimentary to that of the taper region 9, i.e., the angles of the taper region 9 and those of the internal 15 surface 11 of the aperture 10 are preferably substantially the same. When the expanded portion 12 is in an expanded condition 13, the engagement of the frustoconical shaped surfaces of the taper region and the aperture 10 are such that the coupling device 2 is effectively clamped into 20 position within the aperture 10. It will be appreciated that the embodiment of the stop 64 described herein will allow the coupling device 2 to work with articles of varying thicknesses and having apertures 25 configured with surfaces 11 configured to be complementary to the surface of the taper region 9. When the engaging surfaces are of substantially the same slope or gradient, increased surface contact is achieved between the stop 64 and the inner surface 11 of the aperture which allows for a 30 superior clamping effect. It will be appreciated that the taper region 9 as described herein may comprise a non-linear variation in cross-section that achieves the same objectives.
WO 2009/111835 PCT/AU2009/000297 11 In the embodiment of the coupling device 2 shown in Figures 1 to 3, the coupling device 2 further comprises an activator 5 26 configured to be operable with the expandable portion 12. The activator 26 comprises a handle portion 28 disposed at one end and an engaging portion 30 such as, for example, shank portion 33 extending from the handle portion 28. The engaging portion 30 is configured to be movable along the 10 longitudinal axis 20 within a region of space 34 internal of the body 6. The engaging portion 30 further comprises an external thread 48 (also shown in Figure 5) threadingly engagable with thread 50 (shown in Figure 4) formed on the internal facing surface of the region of space 34 at the 15 second portion 14 of the body 6. The shank 33 further comprises a tip portion 31 that is brought into contact with an engagement element 17 when the activator 26 is translated to operate the expandable portion 12 into the expanded condition 13 shown in Figure 2. 20 With reference to the embodiment of the coupling device 2 shown in Figures 2 and 3, it will be understood that movement or translation of the engaging portion 30 substantially along the longitudinal axis 20 toward the 25 expandable portion 12 will cause to engage the tip portion 31 with the engagement element 17. According to one method of operation, this translation may be caused by winding the handle portion 28 in a clockwise direction in accordance with the engaging threads. The translation will force the 30 engagement element to wedge between the engaging elements 16a and 16b. This interaction imparts a force on each of the engaging elements la, 16b which urges them apart. Further translation of the shank portion 33 will cause to move WO 2009/111835 PCT/AU2009/000297 12 engaging elements 16a, 16b substantially outwards of the longitudinal axis 20 until contact is made with the internal wall of the internal region 18 so as to project a substantial portion thereof beyond the extremity of the 5 first portion 8 so as to provide a suitable protrusion for engaging the lowermost surface 22 of the article 4. It will be appreciated that the engagement element 17 does not need to be a separate component and may be formed integral with the tip portion 31 of the shank 33 with an appropriately 10 shaped tip portion (for example conically shaped) to motivate the engaging elements 16a, 16b outward. It will be appreciated that wedge shaped elements or other suitably shaped elements may be used instead of the spherical shape of elements 16a, 16b or 17. 15 Figure 3 shows the expandable portion in a contracted condition 19 whereby engaging elements 16a, 16b are retained within the region of space 18 within the first portion 12 of the body 6. The engaging elements 16a, 16b may be released 20 from the expanded condition 13 by a reverse motion to that previously described whereby an anti-clockwise actuation of the activator 26 causes the engaging portion 30 to move away from the expandable portion 12. With the engaging portion 30 motivated away from the expandable portion 30, the 25 applied force to engagement element 17 is removed. Accordingly, engagement element 17 becomes free to move allowing engaging elements 16a, 16b to move inward from the extremity of the first portion 8 of the body 6 and cease any engagement with article 4. The coupling device 2 is then 30 removable from the aperture 10. In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 3, the second portion 6 comprises an external thread 40 at an end of the WO 2009/111835 PCT/AU2009/000297 13 body 6 opposite to the first portion 8 and configured so as to engage a sleeve portion 44 (shown in Figure 6). Accordingly, sleeve portion 44 comprises a circular (cross sectioned) cylinder having a complementary internal thread 5 46 configured to engage thread 40 of the body 6. The sleeve portion 44 is thus threadingly movable relative to the body 2. The movement of the sleeve portion 44 allows clamping of the lifting bar 24 against surface 60 in co-operation with a rear surface 62 of the stop 64. 10 With reference to the embodiment of the coupling device 2 described herein, it will be further appreciated that the stop 64 and/or the first portion 8 may be configured to each be threadingly engageable with the body 6 so as to account 15 for articles of varying thickness and/or to vary their relative position with respect to the body 6. Referring to Figure 7, the coupling device 2 is shown in use for lifting an alternative type of article 4 which comprises 20 aperture 10 in the form of a blind hole. The aperture 10 comprises internal facing surface 11 similar to that described in relation to Figure 1 and a cavity 94 for receiving the first portion 8 of the body of the coupling device 2. Between the surface 11 and inside wall of the 25 cavity 94 is a constriction formed in part by surface 92. In this case surface 92 is a flat annulus shape, parallel with surface 22, but it need not be this shape. It can be for example curved. The constriction should be such that the expanding portion 12 can engage against it when in the 30 expanded configuration so as to prevent the body of the coupling device 2 from being withdrawn from the aperture 10. Preferably the surface 92 is arranged in relation the inner surface 11 and the expanding portion 12 is arranged in WO 2009/111835 PCT/AU2009/000297 14 relation to surface 9 of stop 64 so that when the expanding portion is expanded a clamping force is applied to surfaces 11 and 92 by surface 9 and the surface of the expanding portion 12. 5 The article 14 may be for example a wear plate with the aperture comprising a conical hole, such as that described in WO 2006060877. 10 Numerous variations and modifications will suggest themselves to persons skilled in the relevant art, in addition to those already described, without departing from the basic inventive concepts. All such variations and modifications are to be considered within the scope of 15 the present invention, the nature of which is to be determined from the foregoing description.
