Abstract

A conditioned air ducting system is provided for an access floor having a plurality of panels (18) supported by pedestals (16). The ducting system has spaced apart first and second duct wall assemblies (10) that define therebetween an air tight duct passageway (12) through which conditioned air is able to flow. Each assembly (10) has a stringer (14) supported by a respective set of pedestals (16). The stringer (14) has an upper portion (20) extending from one pedestal to another pedestal of the set and supporting the underside edges of adjacent panels (18) so as to close any gap therebetween. The stringer (14) also has a lower portion (30) for engaging a barrier wall (32). A bracket (42) secures the barrier wall (32) to a sub-floor (40). Each set of pedestals (16) is selected according to the desired width and positioning of the duct passageway (12).

SUMMARY OF INVENTION It has now been found by the present inventor that an improved 5 conditioned air ducting system for access flooring which overcomes all of the aforementioned problems can be provided by utilising the panel supporting pedestals as the means for supporting the walls of the ducting system. According to the present invention, there is provided a conditioned air ducting system for an access floor having a plurality of panels supported by 10 pedestals, the ducting system comprising spaced apart first and second duct wall assemblies that define therebetween an airtight duct passageway through which conditioned air is able to flow, each assembly comprising a stringer supported by a respective set of pedestals, the stringer having an upper portion extending from one pedestal to another pedestal of the set and supporting the 15 underside edges of adjacent panels so as to close any gap therebetween, the stringer also having a lower portion for engaging a barrier wall, and means for securing the barrier wall to a sub-floor, wherein each set of pedestals is selected according to the desired width and positioning of the duct passageway. 20 Preferably, the upper portion of the stringer includes a downwardly depending tongue, and each pedestal includes an upper platform having a groove into which the tongue of a respective stringer can engage. In a preferred form, the stringer includes a strip of foam rubber affixed to the top of the upper portion. 25 The barrier wall is preferably a metal sheet. It is preferred that the means for securing the barrier wall to the sub-floor comprises a substantially L-shaped bracket. 10/07/09 4 SUMMARY OF THE DRAWING in order that the invention may be more readily understood and put into practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing of Fig. 1, which is a side view of a duct wall assembly of a conditioned air ducting 5 system according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The duct wall assembly 10 shown in Fig. 1 is a first such assembly of a pair of spaced apart duct wall assemblies that make up a conditioned air ducting system and that define therebetween an airtight duct passageway 12 10 through which conditioned air is able to flow. The duct wall assembly has a stringer 14 supported by a respective set of pedestals (only pedestal 16 shown). The pedestals support a plurality of panels 18 of an access floor below which the conditioned air ducting system is located. 15 The stringer 14 is, in this embodiment, made of steel and has an upper portion 20 that extends from one pedestal 16 to another pedestal and supports the underside edges of adjacent panels 18 so as to close any gap therebetween. A tongue 22 downwardly depends from the upper portion of the stringer 14, and engages a groove formed in an upper platform 24 of the 20 pedestal. The upper portion 20 has a top surface upon which is affixed a strip of foam rubber (not shown) used for noise and vibration attenuation, and for the sealing of any slight gap between the edges of adjacent panels. The stringer 14 also has a lower portion 30 which engages a barrier wall 25 32. The barrier wall includes a pocket 34 defined between a main metal sheet 36 and a pocket forming metal sheet 38, and into which the lower portion 30 of 10107/09 5 the stringer 14 is inserted. The lower portion may, optionally, be screw fixed into the pocket 34. The bottom part of the barrier wall 32 is secured to a sub-floor 40 via a substantially L-shaped bracket 42. The bracket may be bolted to the sub-floor 5 and screw fixed to the barrier wall. Conditioned air passes through the duct passageway 12 and is directed to various areas of the underfloor space, from where it may be released through vents into the room above. In particular, warm conditioned air may be directed to the external wall in winter to heat the room, and cool conditioned air 10 may similarly be directed to cool the room in summer. It will be apparent to persons skilled in the art that various modifications may be made in details of design and construction of the conditioned air ducting system described above without departing from the scope or ambit of the present invention. 10/07/09
