Description

CATALOGUE COMPILATION SYSTEM FIELD OF THE INVENTION 5 The present invention relates to systems for creating a list of items by compiling informationi" from multiple sources. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 10 It is often useful to produce a catalogue, compilation or a list of items of a particular character for commercial, research or other purposes. Examples might include a list of houses for sale in a particular area compiled from the listings of multiple real estate agents, or a listing of televisions shows and the times they will go to air compiled form the listings of multiple television broadcasters. 15 However copyright laws in some territories prohibit using a copyright work to make a compilation whether by direct or indirect copying. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION 20 It is an object of this invention to provide a method of producing a second list of items or a compilation which could contain some or all of a first list or compilation without copying from the first list either directly or indirectly. 25 According to one aspect the invention provides a method of producing a list of items relating to defined subject matter including the steps of monitoring advertisements relating to defined subject matter and compiling information disclosed by said advertisements to form a new list. According to another aspect the invention provides a method of enhancing a list of items 30 relating to defined subject matter including the steps of monitoring advertisements relating to defined subject matter and, based on information disclosed by said advertisements, enhancing said list of items. For example, information obtained from said advertisements might be used to correct or augment the list of items. 35 In another aspect the invention provides a method of producing a timetable of events including the steps of monitoring advertisements relating to events relevant to said timetable and compiling information disclosed by said advertisements to form a new timetable. In yet another aspect the invention provides a method of enhancing a timetable of events 40 including the steps of monitoring advertisements relating to events relevant to said timetable and, based on information disclosed by said advertisements, enhancing said timetable. For 1 example, information obtained from said advertisements might be used to correct or augment the timetable. The invention also consists in apparatus adapted to perform the steps of the invention 5 described herein. For example computing means adapted to create or modify electronic documents or databases in accordance with the inventive concept are also within the scope of the invention. DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS 10 An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to Fig. 1 which is a block diagram of an embodiment of the present invention which is used to provide a timetable of past and/or upcoming television programs. 15 Referring now to Fig. 1, database 1 is configured to store television schedule information including names of television shows, the times and channels on which they have been or will be broadcast, and other useful related information such as synopses of the shows. Database 1 is part of a server which is connected to Internet 2 so that it can be remotely accessed. A number of monitoring stations 3, 6, 9 are also provided, in the example shown in Fig 1 there 20 are three such stations although in practice it is likely there will be many more. Each monitoring station comprises a television receiver 4, 7, 10 and a computer terminal 5, 8, 11. The computer terminals are connected to internet 2 and are used to access database 1. Initially database 1 contains little or no information. Operators at monitoring stations 3, 6, 9 25 observe commercials broadcast on television, or in other media, promoting or giving information about television shows which have been or will be broadcast. If they judge the information to be useful, the operator then uses their computer terminal to access database 1. Suitable software associated with database 1 allows the operator to browse or modify the database. For example, an operator at monitoring station 3 sees an advertisement saying "a 30 new series of Boston Legal is starting tomorrow night at 8.30pm on channel 7". An excerpt from the upcoming episode is also shown. The operator checks database 1 and looks at the data for channel seven on the next night. The operator discovers that there is no entry in the database for that time and channel so he enters the information he has learned. He also researches the Boston Legal official website to identify the name of the episode based on the 35 excerpt he had seen in the commercial and enters this information into the database as well. He may also take the opportunity to add his personal comments about the show, a description of the episode, information about rating, actors and so on. In some cases the operator will find that the database already has information in the timeslot 40 of interest. He might add to or correct this information, or take no action. In some 2 embodiments additional software is provided to further enhance the invention. Some enhancements will now be described. In order to improve the reliability of data captured in the database, entries are treated as 5 provisional" until confirmed, for example by an editor whose job it is to check entries, or using a majority-vote system based on multiple entries which should be consistent. For example an entry might remain "provisional" until a second entry is made by a different person which confirms the details previously entered. If say three entries are made and two of them state that a show is on channel 7 and one says channel 17, the system will assume the correct 10 channel is 7. Various automated features can be provided to assist population of the database by means in addition to input from monitoring persons. For example, a useful estimate of upcoming television scheduling can be achieved by simply copying the schedule from a comparable 15 previous period. The invention could thereby include an automated feature which speculatively duplicates say last week's events to the next week, while not overwriting any data that has already been entered by the monitoring persons. Other automation such as algorithms which learn from past patters can also be utilised to enhance the invention. 20 A number of accounting functions can be added to the invention, for example to facilitate logging of which operators make database entries and optionally maintain a payment system so that operators can be remunerated according to their contribution. Whereas the embodiments of the invention described above refer to gathering of information 25 by monitoring television commercials, it is also envisaged that the information can be gleaned from a wide range of sources such as radio, web or print commercials, fan websites, or indeed any other source from which information can be taken without copying, directly or indirectly, from a copyright original work. 30 Whereas the embodiments of the invention described above refer to creation of a television schedule, the invention can equally well be applied to any list, catalogue, compilation or other body of data. 3
