Description
1 Description Railway level crossing warning devices are currently switched by fixed infrastructure. The inherent problem with system is all trains travelling through the crossing intersection must travel at a predetermined speed to achieve the warning time required by road users. The existing system of track side switching usually has no feed back to the train of correct operation or backup system other than failing on, which causes behavioural problems amongst road users. The majority of level crossings do not have active protection and rely on motorists to stop and/or give way to trains. The proposed system would consist of a Global Positioning receiver mounted on a train and linked to a data processor. This system would determine the location of the train respective of the level crossing an either activate or monitor the status of protection at the level crossing. In the event of loss of GPS signal or other failure or event, the system could fail safe by means of a transponder on the locomotive which could alert the road traffic of the presence of the train
Claims (7)
1. A Global Positioning receiver mounted on a locomotive and linked to a data processor, radio transceiver (data) and radio transmitter (analogue).
2. Items mentioned in claim 1 plus also allows for manual operation of the radio transceiver (data) and radio transmitter (analogue).
3. Items mentioned in claims 1 and 2 and where the processor could have the following data entered prior to trains voyage: a. Location of all level crossings on the proposed voyage. b. Type of level crossing active, passive etc. c. Train Type/ required speed through crossings. d. Train Length.
4. Items mentioned in above claims where the processor could then be used to monitor and/or control a trackside warning device.
5. Items mentioned in above claims and where the processor could then be used to control a train mounted warning device in the absence of, or failure of a trackside warning device.
6. Items mentioned in above claims and where the processor could then be used to control a train mounted warning device in the absence of or failure of the GPS receiver
7. Items mentioned in above claims and where the processor could then be used to advise train operator approaching crossing and of correct operation or failure of trackside warning device.
