Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR AN INNOVATION PATENT Name of Applicant: Actual Inventors: Address for Service: Invention Title: Illinois Tool Works Inc.
Bellal Sayegh Robert Urquhart Connell DAVIES COLLISON CAVE, Patent Attorneys, of 1 Nicholson Street, Melbourne, Victoria 3000, Australia Cast-in ferrule The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us: Q:\OPER\RSHUAN 09 JUNE 09\30729266-INNOV-40DOC 13/2/09 P:OPER\RSHI0129266,-o.doc-9/0nOG9 -1- CAST-IN FERRULE The present invention relates to an internally threaded ferrule and more particularly but not exclusively to a ferrule for use as an anchor for temporary bracing for precast concrete wall panels during the erection of concrete structures;.
In patent application 2007216651, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference, there is disclosed an anchor for the foot plate of a temporary bracing prop comprising an internally threaded ferrule with a large area base. As described in detail in that application, the ferrule is associated with a support/void former assembly consisting of a base part which locates the ferrule on the casting surface for a slab and an extension tube which fits onto the base part to define within the cast slab a passage for a threaded rod or reinforcing bar and by which the foot plate of a temporary prop can be secured. As may be ascertained by reference to this earlier application, the large base area of the ferrule is embedded to a maximum depth of embedment from the upper surface of the slab and the anchorage effect achieved thereby is sufficient to retain the prop when the slab has attained a predetermined strength less than its maximum strength; as a result, erection of panels can take place while the slab is still in a "green" or low strength condition.
The present invention according to one aspect relates to a ferrule sized to provide secure anchorage in conditions as outlined above to optimise the relationship between anchorage and the amount of material required to fabricate the ferrule.
The present invention according to another aspect relates to a ferrule capable of use in an anchor as described above but having improved versatility to increase its range of possible uses.
The present invention according to yet another aspect relates to a ferrule of the type disclosed in the earlier application but capable of use absent the base part.
According to the present invention there is provided a ferrule for incorporation into a P: OPERS5HU0729266-in-o.dc.9-9 02"209 -2concrete component during casting, the ferrule having a base of an area sufficient to provide stable support when placed on a casting surface, and an internally-threaded barrel extending from the base, the ratio of the diameter of the base to the internal thread i diameter of the barrel being within the range 6:1 to 8:1.
Further according to the present invention there is provided a ferrule for incorporation into a concrete component during casting, the ferrule having a base of an area sufficient to Sprovide stable support when placed on a casting surface, and an internally threaded barrel extending from the base, the diameter of the base being substantially larger than the external diameter of the barrel and the base being pierced by apertures distributed around the axis of the barrel to receive fastening means for securing the ferrule directly to a casting base or to receive locating means to locate the ferrule relative to a supporting chair.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an isometric view of a ferrule in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention; and Figure 2 is a section through the ferrule shown in Figure 1.
The ferrule shown in the accompanying drawings has an internally threaded barrel 2 and a large area base 4 which provides stable support for the ferrule when the base is resting on a casting surface, the base 4 also being of a size such as to provide secure anchorage for the ferrule within a slab even in conditions where the slab has not obtained its full strength.
The thread within the barrel 2 is designed to except either a threaded rod or reinforcing bar having a partial or continuous thread such as that sold under the trade mark "Reidbar" by Reid Construction Products of Mooroolbark, Victoria. It will be seen from the drawings that the diameter of the base 4 of the ferrule is substantially larger than the external diameter of the barrel of the ferrule; several times larger, as shown. It is preferred that the ratio of the diameter of the base 4 to the internal thread diameter of the barrel 2 is within the range 6:1 to 8:1, with around 7:1 being especially preferred. It is especially preferred that the ratio of the diameter of the base to the external diameter of the barrel is around 4:1.
P:OPER\ SHU0729266-inoo do10c02OO9 -3- Ratios within these ranges provide good stability and secure anchorage under the conditions outlined above whilst minimising the amount of material required to fabricate the ferrule.
The base 4 of the ferrule is apertured with holes 6, as shown three holes, uniformly distributed around the axis of the barrel 2 but other embodiments may have more than, or less than, three holes. These holes have a significant functional purpose in that they allow the ferrule to be independently of the plastic base part disclosed in patent application 2007216651 and which, in effect, acts as a chair for the ferrule. In particular the provision of the holes enables the ferrule to be secured directly to the casting base, which may be of wood or steel, by screws or nails passing through the holes into the casting base.
In the embodiment shown, the base 4 of the ferrule is of the same peripheral shape as that disclosed in patent application 2007216651, with part circular sections alternating with uniformly distributed straight sections whereby at the option of the user the ferrule can either be used in conjunction with the plastic base part disclosed in that application or independently of such a base part, with the ferrule then being secured directly to the casting base as described above. In some situations where the slab within which the ferrule is located forms an upper level of a building, the casing base may be removed after casting to expose the underside of the slab. In that case it may be undesirable for the underside of the ferrule to be directly exposed to the underside of the cast slab and to avoid this, the ferrule may be supported from the casting base by a short plastic chair which supports and locates the ferrule a short distance above the casting base by engagement of upwardly projecting fingers of the chair within the holes of the ferrule base 6. In situations such as these, it will be understood that the ferrule would normally be used in conjunction with a tubular void former engageable over the barrel of the ferrule.
Although it is preferred that the base of the ferrule is of the non-circular shape shown so that it is capable of use with the plastic base part as disclosed in application 2007216651, in alternative embodiments the ferrule may be designed just for direct securement to the casting base and/or for use with a short chair as discussed above, in which case the base of P QOPERRSM3O729266-vdo-9/OI9 0 O -4ci ~0
