Description
AUSTRALIA Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT SELF FLUSHING LEAF FILTER The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: SELF FLUSHING LEAF FILTER Rainwater tank inlet strainers are prone to leaf build up as leaf bearing rainwater flows into the strainer, eventually the leaves cause a blockage of the strainer preventing the majority of the rainwater entering the rainwater tank. This is most common in rainwater systems where there is insufficient height between the stormwater piping and rainwater tank inlet for the fitment of vertically mounted leaf filtering devices. This invention has been devised to provide a self flushing leaf filter to prevent the build up of leaves in a rain water tank inlet strainer caused by leaf bearing rainwater inflow. The Self Flushing Leaf Filter in accordance with this invention, comprises a filter assembly, an inlet adaptor and an outlet adaptor. The inlet and outlet adaptors are dimensioned to mate with typical stormwater downpipe and facilitate fitment and removal of the filter assembly. The inlet adaptor and outlet adaptor can be either affixed to the rainwater tank strainer or mounted above the rainwater tank strainer by any means with the filter assembly being mounted horizontally between the Inlet adaptor and outlet adaptor. 7 The filter assembly comprises of a main body and filter element. The main body is rectangular in cross section, having an inlet end, an outlet end and a cut away section on the underside of the main body which continues partially up the body sides and longitudinally along the majority of underside of main body. The filter element is affixed to the main body from the inside of the main body and completely 3 covers the cutaway section of the main body. The main body is preferably made from PVC plastic, and the filter element is preferably aluminium or steel mesh or micro-screen materiel however, other materials can also be used. For example galvanised steel rectangular downpipe could be used as an alternate material for the main body and the filter element could be perforated sheet metal or plastic. 30 The inlet adaptor and outlet adaptor are dimensioned to fit typical rainwater downpipe to the outward facing ends. The outward facing inlet adaptor and outlet adaptor ends are typically circular in cross section and the inward facing ends of the inlet adaptor and outlet adaptor are rectangular in cross section. The inlet adaptor 35 and outlet adaptor inward facing ends are dimensioned to provide means of retaining the filter assembly and facilitates the removal of the filter assembly by upward horizontal lifting of the filter assembly from the inlet and outlet adaptors and installation of the filter assembly by downward horizontal placement of the filter assembly between the inlet and outlet adaptors. The inlet adaptor and outlet adaptor 'to5 are preferably made from PVC plastic however, other materials can also be used. For example galvanised steel inlet and outlet adaptors could be used as an alternate to PVC.
This invention may be better understood by explanation of the operation of the invention with reference to the illustrations of the embodiments of the invention which: 6 Figure 1 is a side view of the Self Flushing Leaf Filter comprising of the filter assembly fitted to the inlet and outlet adaptors. Figure 2 is an exploded view of the Self Flushing Leaf Filter showing filter assembly and inlet and outlet adaptors. Figure 3 is a side view of an example of typical installation of the self Flushing Leaf Filter above a rainwater tank inlet strainer. Means of securing the inlet and outlet adaptors has not been illustrated. 5 Leaf bearing rainwater is supplied to the Self Flushing Leaf Filter (comprising 1, 2 & 3) from the rainwater system piping flowing in a longitudinal direction through the inlet adaptor (2) into the filter assembly (1) with rainwater flow direction being toward the outlet adaptor (3). The leaf bearing rainwater flowing into the filter assembly inlet (4) enters the filter assembly (1) where the rainwater falls through the filter element 3 (5) and into the rainwater tank inlet strainer (6). Leaves are carried by the rainwater in a direction toward the filter assembly outlet (7) and are deposited on the filter element (5) as the rainwater falls through the filter element (5). As leaf bearing rainwater continues to flow into the filter assembly (1), the quantity of leaves deposited on the filter element (5) increases and can begin to restrict the flow of the rainwater through the Filter Assembly filter element (5). If a restriction of rainwater flow through the filter element (5) occurs due to leaf build up on the filter element (5), rainwater flow into the filter assembly (1) flushes the leaves along the filter element (5) in a direction toward the filter assembly outlet (7). The flushing of c the leaf build up along the filter element (5) in the direction toward the filter assembly outlet (7) exposes the filter element (5) and the rainwater falls through the filter element into the rainwater tank inlet strainer (6). Leaf build up which has been progressively flushed along the filter element (5) in a direction toward the filter assembly outlet (7), exits the Self Flushing Leaf Filter (comprising 1, 2 & 3) through 35 the outlet adaptor (3). An example of a typical installation of the Self Flushing Leaf Filter may consist of additional pipe and pipe joints connected to the outlet adaptor (3) in a manner that facilitates the collection of flushed leaves in a receptacle such as a bucket.
Claims (3)
1. The Self Flushing Leaf Filter comprises of a filter assembly, inlet adaptor and outlet adaptor wherein the inlet and outlet adaptors facilitate fitment and removal of the filter assembly which is mounted horizontally between the inlet adaptor and outlet adaptor, wherein the filter assembly comprises a rectangular cross section main body having an inlet end, an outlet end and a cutaway section on the underside of the main body which continues partially up the body sides and longitudinally along the majority of underside of main body with a filter element affixed which completely covers the cutaway section, and wherein the inlet adaptor and outlet adaptor are dimensioned to accept the fitment of typical rainwater downpipe on the outward facing ends with the inward facing ends of the inlet and outlet adaptor being rectangular in cross section to provide means of retaining the filter assembly and also facilitate removal of the filter assembly by upward horizontal lifting of the filter assembly from the inlet and outlet adaptors and installation of the filter assembly by downward horizontal placement of the filter assembly to position the filter assembly between the inlet and outlet adaptors.
2. The Self Flushing Leaf Filter as claimed in claim 1, wherein the filter assembly has a filter element that facilitates the separation of leaves from leaf bearing rainwater by the action of the rainwater falling through the filter element.
3. The Self Flushing Leaf Filter as herein before described with reference to figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawings. Derek John Gibbins 17 August 2009
