Patents Act 1990 PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION Invention Title: COVER FOR A SOFT FURNISHING ITEM Applicant: SHELLEY ADAMS The invention is described in the following statement: WASAMAooatsk775e (2D-086C8PtoSWd~eoc COMS ID No: ARCS-196648 Received by IP Australia: Time 15:20 Date 2008-07-01 FROM 075527039 FROM 075527039 ~PHONE NO. 334323Jl 12030:7MP Jul. 01 2003 04:57PM P3 00 2 COVER FOR A SOFT FURNISHING ITEM The Field of the Invention The present invention relates generally to covers for soft furnishing items such as cushions, pillows, quilts and the like.
00 Background to the Invention Soft furnishing items such cushions, pillows, quilts, doonas, comforters, 00 duvets, blankets and the like are generally encased in a protective cover before use. Since soft furnishing items including a filling of down, feathers, wool or synthetic fibres or the like, which tends to break down after repeated washing are difficult to clean, the soft furnishing item Is enclosed in a cover made from a washable fabric to enable the cover to be periodically removed from the soft furnishing item for cleaning.
Covers for use on soft furnishings may also serve a decorative purpose.
Using covers in different fabrics and styles, it is possible to change the look and feel of a soft furnishing Item in an inexpensive manner.
A typical cover for a soft furnishing item such as a quilt, is rectangular in shape, enclosed on three sides and has an opening at one end to permit the quilt to be inserted into the cover. Press-studs, buttons, ties or other fastening devices are provided along the opening to enable the cover to be closed once the quilt has been inserted therein.
Considerable difficulty is usually experienced in fitting such a cover to a quilt. Inserting the quilt into the cover involves pushing the quilt into the cover through the opening, and manipulating the quilt within the cover to flatten the quilt and ensure that each of the corners extends into a corresponding corner in the cover. This method is time consuming and frustrating since the quilt has a tendency to crumple inside the cover.
An alternative method involves turning the cover inside out and grasping the corners of the quilt with the corresponding corners of the cover located remote from the opening and drawing the cover down over the quilt. This method is also cumbersome for one person to carry out alone since it is difficult to keep hold of the corners of the quilt whilst drawing the cover down-over the quilt.

It is an object of the present invention to overcome or ameliorate one or more problems of the prior art.
00 0 Summary of the Invention t"- According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a N cover for a soft furnishing item, including: 00 10 a first area and a second area divided by a fold line, each area having C two or more free edges; releasably operable closure means disposed along the free edges; wherein the cover is configured to be folded along the fold line to receive the soft furnishing item between the first area and the second area and retain the item there between by fastening corresponding edges of the first and second areas using the closure means.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the free edges of the first area further include a flap extending therefrom, the flap being configured to fold over the corresponding edges of the second area when the corresponding edges are brought together. More preferably, the closure means is disposed on the flap and a complementary closure means is disposed on the free edges associated with the second area.
In another embodiment of the invention, the first or second area further includes a decorative edging extending from one or more of the free edges.
The closure means may be selected from any one or more of the following: a zipper; a hook and loop type fastener strip; a button and button hole; a button and loop; a press stud; a magnetic fastener; a hook and eye type fastener; or a tie.

O According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided 00 a method for enclosing a soft furnishing item in a cover, the method including 0 10 the following steps: unfolding a cover being divided into a first area and a second area by a fold line, each area having two or more free edges; placing the soft furnishing item onto the first area; folding the cover along the fold line and drawing the second area over the soft furnishing item, thereby enclosing the soft furnishing item between the first area and the second area; and securing the corresponding edges of the first and second areas together by fastening together closure means disposed along the free edges associated with the first area with complementary closure means disposed on the free edges associated with the second area.
In one particular form of the invention, the method further includes the steps of: folding a flap extending from the free edges associated with the first area over the free edges associated with the second area; and fastening the flap to the free edges associated with the second area.
Preferably, the soft furnishing item is arranged to be evenly distributed across the first area.
An advantage of the present invention is that it provides a cover for a soft furnishing item which is easier to apply to the soft furnishing item than prior art covers.

Detailed Description Referring firstly to Figure 1, a cover 10 for a soft furnishing item includes a first area 12 and a second area 14 divided by a fold line 16. Each area 12, 14 has two or more free edges 18 and releasably operable closure means disposed along each of the free edges 18. The cover 10 is configured to be folded along the fold line 16 to receive the soft furnishing item (not shown) between the first area 12 and the second area 14. The soft furnishing item is retained between the areas 12, 14 by fastening corresponding free edges 18 of the first area 12 together with the free edges of the second area 14 the releasably operable closure means The cover 10 may be made in a range of shapes and sizes, In order to cover soft furnishing or bedding items such as quilts, doonas, eiderdowns, comforters, duvets and blankets, which typically come in a rectangular form in standard sizes, a suitable cover 10 has a rectangular shape sized to accommodate the soft furnishing item therein as shown in Figure 1. In the illustrated embodiment, each area 12, 14 has three free edges 18. However, it WASAKIA KW tn4 Spodoev o ooft fumihirg ltemdoc COMS ID No: ARCS-196648 Received by IP Australia: Time 15:20 Date 2008-07-01 FROM 075527039 FRON 075527039 ~PHONE NO. :0363943238Ju.02085:PMP Jul. 01 2008 05:01PM P7 00 6 Is to be understood that the cover 10 could come in a range of shapes to fit different shaped cushions, for example including circles, ovals, heart shapes, triangles, and other polygons.
The closure means 20 disposed on the free edges 18 of the cover may be any suitable closure which can be manually released. It is intended however, that the closure means 20 disposed on the free edges 18 of the first 00 area 12 of the cover 10 will be complementary to the closure means disposed on the free edges 18 of the second area 14 of the cover 10 to enable 00thcorsodnede18othfisanseodaes1,1tobseue thCorsodn de 8 ftefrtadscn aes1,1 ob eue C) 10 to one another when they are brought together. Use of a zipper is considered to be particularly advantageous in this context since a z ipper can be quickly closed by manual means. Magnetic fasteners such as magnetic snaps or buttons, or hook and loop type fastener strips VELCROTM) are also particularly effective as closure means since little effort is required on part of the user to cause these types of fasteners to secure the free edges 18 together apart from pressing those edges 18 together. It is to be understood however, that various alternative closure means including buttons and button holes, buttons and loops, toggles, press studs, hook and eye type fasteners or ties may used with the cover Figure 2 shows a variation of the cover 10 including a flap 22 extending from the free edges 18 of the first area of the cover 12. Each flap 22 Is configured to fold over the corresponding edge 18 of the second area 14 when the free edges 18 of the first and second areas 12, 14 are brought together.
Inclusion of the flap 22 serves to prevent portions of the soft furnishing item from protruding between the closure means 20, particularly when using buttons, toggles or press studs disposed along the free edges 18 at regular intervals and therefore do not provide a continuous closure. In addition, inclusion of the flap 22 for folding over the corresponding free edges 18 may provide a neater finish.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 2, the releasably operable closure means 20 is disposed on the flap 22 to be fastened to a complementary closure means 20 disposed on the free edges 18 associated with the second area 1 4.
Figure 3 shows yet another variation of the cover 10 where the first or second area 12, 14 further includes a decorative edging 24 extending from one Spodo-for soft kyn~pftw~I.oc ARCS-196648 Received by IP Australia: Time 15:20 Date 2008-07-01 FROM 075527039 FROM 075527039 PHONE NO. 036.3943238 Jl 120 51MP Jul. 01 2008 05:01PM PS 00 7 Clor more of the free edges 18. The decorative edging may be a frill or valance Z type edging.
method of enclosing the soft furnishing item in a cover will now be described by referring firstly to Figure 4A. A user unfolds a cover 10 to be fitted to a soft furnishing item 26. The cover is divided into a first. area 12 and a 00 second area 14 by a fold line 16, each area 12, 14 having two or more free edges 18. The first area 12 of the cover 10 is substantially smoothed out. If for example, the cover 10 is configured to be fitted to a quilt or other bedding item, 00 the first area 12 of the cover 10 may be spread out across a bed. The second area 14 need not necessarily be smoothed out at this stage but could remain folded or bunched at an end of the bed. The first area 12 should be substantially smoothed in preparation for receiving a quilt or other soft furnishing item 26 thereon.
As shown in Figure 4B a next step of the method involves placing the soft furnishing item 26 onto the first area 12 of the cover 10. Preferably, the soft furnishing item 26 is arranged to be evenly distributed across the first area 12.
That is, any corners 28 and or edges 30 of the soft furnishing item 26 are substantially aligned with any corresponding corners 32 or edges 18 of the cover 10. This step has greater importance when the soft furnishing item 26 is a large Rtem such as a quilt or blanket and less importance in the case of smaller items such as cushions or pillows whose substantial shape is not so readily crumpled or distorted within the cover.
In a next step shown in Figure 4C, the cover 10 is folded along the fold line 16 and the second area 14 is drawn over the soft furnishing item 26 to enclose or effectively sandwich the soft furnishing item 26 between the first and second areas 12, 14, The cover 10, or the first and second areas 12, 14 are each slightly larger In dimensions than the soft furnishing item 26 to be enclosed there between. The effect of the slightly larger dimensions is that when the soft furnishing item 26 is arranged substantially across the first area 12, the free edges 18 and closure means 20 remain exposed so that when the free edges 18 and closure means 20 associated with the second area 14 are brought into alignment with the free edges 18 and closure means 20 associated with the first area 12, the corresponding edges 18 can be secured together by fastening together the closure means 20 together as shown in Figure W:WASKL&".1.4~ o 01fo~I~fOmO COMS ID No: ARCS-196648 Received by P1 Australia: Time 15:20 Date 2008-07-01 FROM 075527039 PHONE NO. 0363943238 Jul. 01 2008 05:02PM P9 8 00 8 NWhere the cover 10 further includes a flap 22 extending from the free edges associated with the first area, the flap or flaps 22 (see Figure 2) are Sfolded over the free edges 18 associated with the second area 14. With the flap 0 20 overlapping the free edge 18, the flap 20 is then fastened to the edge 18 associated with the second area 14.
O It is to be understood that the cover of the present invention has a wide 00 range of applications including covering soft furnishing items or bedding and O also pet or animal bedding. The cover may be configured to cover any item 00 which is likely to become soiled during use and is difficult to wash due to its 0 10 inherent bulk.
An advantage of the present invention is that it provides a cover for a soft furnishing item which is easier to apply to the soft furnishing item than prior art covers. The cover of the present invention can be rapidly applied to or removed from a soft furnishing item for the purposes of washing the cover or changing the cover for other reasons. The ease of fitting the cover of the present invention has particular advantage for users having arthritis or other orthopaedic problems which make it difficult for a user to manipulate items with their hands.
in addition, it is an advantage that the cover ameliorates the problem of other items becoming caught inside the cover during washing or tumble drying.
It is to be understood that various modifications, additions and/or alterations may be made to the parts previously described without departing from the ambit of the present invention as defined in the claims appended hereto.
