Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION Standard Patent Applicant(s): JASCO PTY LIMITED Invention Title: STRUCTURES FOR ARTISTIC USE The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method for performing it known to me/us: P7375aAU.1 PSetJiri ApoUon200 2-3.1 doc(S) 00 The present invention relates to structures for artistic presentation and more particularly cK1 is concerned with providing arrangements to facilitate artists adopting a new visual impression.
M 5 Although not limited to artwork of the nature of paintings, embodiments of the invention will be described hereinafter with reference to an example of a particular IND application to painted works such as oil paintings on canvas. Conventionally artist's canvas is mounted over pieces of wood or stretcher bars that form a rectangular timber frame (also known as the stretcher frame) and secured to a rear face. The artist usually S 10 then creates the artwork and the product is then suitable for display and/or further 00 mounting in an additional decorative framework. Essentially this provides a three dimensional structure with a planar, stretched canvas surface for use by the artist.
The present invention is concerned with providing a different form of structure which provides for different artwork presentation and opens up to the artist, for the first time, the possibility of significantly different visual impressions and representation being achieved from embodiments of the invention.
In one aspect the present invention provides an artists' substrate comprising a three dimensional rigid support providing a box-like shape and adapted to receive an artistic medium such as canvas to be stretched over the box-like shape and attached thereto to provide an exposed major facet for receiving artwork and adjacent side facets, the rigid support having at least one rear facet adapted to lie adjacent a flat surface, with the exposed major facet being non-parallel to the surface.
The rigid support may be provided by a multiplicity of struts adapted to be interconnected to form a framework.
The rigid support may be provided by four struts.
The rigid support may provide 6 facets including a major facet, a rear facet and four side facets.
The struts may be wooden.
In another aspect the present invention provides a kit comprising a multiplicity of struts adapted to be assembled to form a substrate according to the first aspect of the N.\Sydney\Cases\Patent\'7300-73999\P7375 .AU.1\Specis\Specificaton.doc 3/04/08 00 invention.
2 For example an included angle of 10 to 45 degrees could be provided for so that in this way an angled surface is provided as the principal surface for the artwork with edges also available to contribute to the artwork.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 is set of schematic views of a first embodiment wherein one side is of lesser 0 height than the opposing side to form a trapezium shaped structure from the remaining side views; Figure 2 illustrates one method of constructing the artists' substrate of figure 1; Figure 3 depicts another embodiment where one corner is different to the others; and Figure 4 comprises views of a third embodiment with differing heights across a pair of respective opposing corners.
Referring to figure 2, an artists' substrate 10 is shown formed from four wooden struts, 12, 14, 16 18. Struts 12, 16 are rectangular in shape and strut 12 is deeper than strut 16. The major fact of the substrate has been labelled A and the rear facet has been labelled B. In use, rear facet B is intended to lie against a wall or the like. Struts 14, 18 are trapezoidal in shape and are identical in size. To form the substrate, the struts 12, 14, 16 18 and joined at 90 degree joins using tongue and groove joints. Then a canvas may be stretched over the substrate and fixed with staples. Similarly, tacks, adhesives or tucking in of a vinyl spline may be used to fix the canvas to the substrate.
In other embodiments the struts to form each quadrilateral-shaped structure are of any suitable cross-section to provide rigidity and with any suitable interconnection arrangements. For example the struts could be of simple extruded plastic, metal elements with interengagement elements at each corner typically having three arms for interconnection either to fit within apertures in the end of each strut or fitting over the end in a telescopic manner. The box-like shapes illustrated in the embodiments could however be of a solid structure such as expanded plastic foam.
