DESCRIPTION
0 This specification describes a novel invention in the form of a medicated fish feed into which have been placed therapeutic quantities of one or more of a range of anthelmintic drugs (including, but not limited to praziquantel, fenbendazole and _levamisole) together with proprietary feeding attractants which do not require carrier substances for their delivery, but nevertheless promote feeding behaviour in the target fish population being treated, thus ensuring consumption of the medicated feed.
Anthelmintic drugs have many uses to prevent disease caused by ectoparasitic and O endoparasitic helminths on fish cultured in marine and freshwater areas. Addition of 00 anthelmintic drugs to the feed is a very convenient method of delivering these drugs O to the fish, however while the efficacy of these drugs improves with increasing dose rate (mg per kg of feed), the palatability of the feed generally decreases with increasing dose rate, such that fish begin to reject feed containing the most effective therapeutic doses of the most effective drugs such as praziquantel. This behaviour is apparently due to the unpalatable taste of the drugs when they are incorporated into the feed at therapeutic dose rates.
This problem can be circumvented by incorporating other active substances into the feed, namely proprietary formulation attractants, such as amino acids, nucleotides and natural and synthetic extracts from various aquatic organisms, which do not require to be mixed with additional carrier substances for their delivery, but nevertheless trigger the fishes olfactory and taste receptors, eliciting feeding behaviour in the target fish species. The presence of the additional attractants in the feed (and in the water surrounding the fish as the attractants leach from the feed), makes the fish more likely to eat a medicated feed which they would usually reject as unpalatable. Another process, namely microencapsulation of the drugs into the feed, is also included here as it also can be used to modulate delivery of the drug and in doing so can be used to prevent fish from tasting the drug for a short period of time, thus further increasing the effectiveness of the attractant. Either use of the attractant alone, microencapsulation alone, or both methods (attractant and microencapsulation) in combination in the medicated feed can thus manipulate the fish into eating therapeutic quantities of anthelmintic drugs that they would otherwise reject.
00 As an example of the effectiveness of this technology is as follows. A trial was conducted using a pelleted aquaculture feed medicated with 7.5 g per kg praziquantel fed at 2% bodyweight per day to kingfish to give a dose rate of 150 mg/kg of fish/day.
The trial was conducted in two tanks using two types of pellets, diet A with a feeding attractant added into the feed, and diet B without additional feeding attractants added to the feed. Fish fed diet A consumed their complete daily ration over a period of 6 days, and hence received the complete 150 mg/kg dose over this time period.
However in the other tank, the fish rejected a significant proportion of diet B and Shence did not receive the complete dose of drug.

Claims (3)
1. A feed for aquacultured fish which is medicated with one or more anthelmintic drugs such as praziquantel, fenbendazole and levamisole at therapeutic dose rates
2. A fish feed as described in claim 1 which is intended for feeding to aquacultured fish in order to eliminate or control ectoparasitic and endoparasitic helminths. S3. Microencapsulation of the anthelmintic drugs into the feed as described in claim 1 00 S4. Addition to proprietary attractant substances into the feed as described in claim 1 which trigger the olfactory and/or taste receptors of cultured fish. The attractants described in claim 4 are any attractants which do not require carrier substances for their delivery, but instead can be applied directly onto or into the feed during or after its manufacturing process
6. The combination of the medicated feed as described in claim 1 with addition of microencapsulation of the drugs as described in claim 3 and/or the proprietary attractant substances described in claim 4.
