Description
Huhtamaki Ronsberg, Zweigniederlassung der 8th August 2007 Huhtamaki Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG M/VRG-099-PC Heinrich-Nicolaus-Str. 6 MB/PO/sh/fr 87671 Ronsberg/Allgau "Packaging for frozen or chilled products, especially ice cream" Description The invention relates to a packaging, especially a flexible packaging for frozen or chilled products, such as ice cream or the like, especially a cone for holding ice cream, having a single-layered or multi-layered film or laminate which comprises a printed substrate layer, especially a PE, PP, aluminium and/or paper web, or an 5 aluminized PE, PB, PETP or paper web. Such packagings are generally known, the films used therefor usually also comprising so-called barrier layers. 10 The known packagings generally have a very unpleasant feel, however. When the packaging is taken out of a refrigerator or freezer compartment, condensed moisture very quickly forms on the surface which makes the packaging "slippery". Further more, that condensed moisture is also unpleasant from the haptic standpoint. 15 Moreover, the mentioned condensation and the formation of droplets means that the appearance of the packaging is not particularly attractive. The present invention is therefore based on the problem of providing a packaging of the kind mentioned at the beginning which is considerably improved over the prior 20 art from both the visual and the haptic standpoints. In particular, the packaging should give the visual impression of a chilled or frozen product, but the relevant temperature is not immediately felt when the packaging is touched. That problem is solved by the characterising features of claim 1. 25 -2 According to the invention, the printed outer side, or visible side, of the film from which the packaging is made is to be provided with a non-woven layer of spun PB (polypropylene) and/or PE (polyethylene) or like material, such as PETP, the thickness and distribution of which are such that the printed image still remains 5 substantially sharply discernible. The non-woven layer gives the impression of ice crystals' having formed on the surface of the packaging. Accordingly, the visual impression given is of a chilled or frozen product. When the packaging is then touched, however, the packaging surprisingly feels relatively warm and dry, that being the case as a result of the surface structure of the non-woven layer, which 10 naturally also has an insulating effect; that is because between the fingers of a user and the printed side of the packaging film, by virtue of the non-woven layer, there are formed within that layer air cushions which have a corresponding insulating effect. The non-woven layer can also consist of organic fibres. 15 Preferably, the non-woven layer has the following properties: weight per unit area: 10 - 40 g/m 2 thickness: 130 - 200 micron air permeability at an air pressure of about 190 - 200 Pa, especially 20 about 196 Pa: 4000 - 9000 litre/m 2 /s. With the above-mentioned properties, the quality of the printed image on the visible side of the packaging film is impaired only insignificantly. Even lettering having a character height of about 1.0 mm can still be discerned with sharp definition through 25 the non-woven layer and can accordingly be easily read. The non-woven layer can be colourless or white, but can also be held in any other, preferably light colour. If the printed image has been applied to an aluminized surface and the non-woven layer has been coloured white, the visual effect of a 30 surface covered in ice crystals is especially marked. Further advantageous properties of the non-woven layer are: longitudinal breaking load: 800 - 980 N/n transverse breaking load: 350 - 650 N/n. 35 - 3 It has also proved advantageous for the non-woven layer to have a longitudinal expansion of from 6 to 10 %, especially approximately from 7 to 9 %, and a trans verse expansion of from 8 to 20 %, especially from 9 to 17 %, the longitudinal resistance to tear propagation being 600 - 850 cN and the transverse resistance to 5 tear propagation being about 800 - 1300 cN. The base film can consist of PE (polyethylene), PP (polypropylene), PETP aluminium and/or paper. Preferably, the base film is aluminized on its printed side, that is to say is an aluminized PE, PP, PETP or paper web. 10 As mentioned at the beginning, the packaging film can be in the form of a single layered or multi-layered film or laminate. It can comprise a barrier layer, especially of aluminium. Preferably, the inner side of the packaging film, i.e. the side facing the food, is lined with a liquid-impermeable layer, especially a food-compatible plastics 15 layer, such as PE or PP. Because this is, in principle, technology that is known per se, no further details will be given herein. The accompanying Figures show, in plan view, exemplary embodiments of non woven layers applied in accordance with the invention. 20 Figure 1 shows a non-woven layer having the following primary properties: weight per unit area: 28 - 32 g/m 2 thickness: 190 - 200 micron air permeability at 196 Pa: 3900 - 4100 litre/m 2 /s. 25 In Figure 2, the above-mentioned properties are as follows: weight per unit area: 22 - 27 g/m 2 thickness: 130 - 140 micron air permeability at 196 Pa: 8500 - 9200 litre/m 2 /s. 30 The properties of the non-woven layer according to Figure 3 are: weight per unit area: 32 - 37 g/m 2 thickness: 192 - 197 micron air permeability at 196 Pa: 5800 - 6200 litre/m 2/s. 35 -4 By suitable colouring of the spun PP or PE material, it is possible to achieve shimmering, that is to say iridescent, effects. All the features disclosed in the application documents are claimed as being 5 important to the invention, where they are novel with respect to the prior art either singly or in combinations.
