Abstract
A clip including a shaped recess, and legs adapted to engage about a rib form of roof cladding such that the legs engage either side of the rib form, whereupon at least part of the rib form resides within the shaped recess between the legs when engaged.
Description
1 A CLIP TECHNICAL FIELD This invention relates to a clip and more particularly to a clip for external 5 mounting to a roof. BACKGROUND ART It is desirable with roof cladding to keep penetrations in the cladding to a 10 minimum so as to ensure water tightness is maintained. While this is to a large part achieved with internal clipped long-run roofing, typically used in industrial/commercial applications, penetrations are often only required when fixing walkways and support structures for services (e.g. air conditioning, extractors, piping etc.) to the roof. 15 It has been proposed to clamp structures to the roof in order to reduce the number of penetrations in the roof. While this generally avoids penetration of the roof cladding the clamps can cause damage to the protective coating on the cladding. This, thereby, exposes parts of the roof cladding to corrosion and 20 hence deterioration of the roof. With commercial/industrial roofing it is necessary to routinely carry out washing of the external surface of the roof. This is to ensure that corrosive or potentially damaging effects by products of manufacturing processes that fall onto the roof 25 are cleaned off the roof surface. This, however, can often become difficult with walkways and support structures for services being mounted close to or on the surface of the roof, In such situations it is difficult, or in some cases impossible, to effectively clean the roof surface beneath the walkway/support structure and this can give rise to damage occurring to the roof cladding underneath such 30 structures. Reference to any prior art in this specification does not constitute an admission that such prior art forms part of the common general knowledge.
2 DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the invention to provide a clip that ameliorates one or more of the above problems, or at least to provide the public with a useful choice. 5 It would be desirable to provide a clip which can be externally fastened to a roof without causing damage to or penetration of the roof cladding, It would also be desirable to provide a clip which can be externally fastened to a 10 roof using existing penetrations whilst improving, or at least maintaining, weather tightness, It would also be desirable to provide a mounting assembly for the mounting of fixtures and fittings such as walkways and support structures above the roof 15 surface to make it easier to access the roof surface in the vicinity thereof for cleaning purposes. The inventive concept embodied in the clip of this invention involves a push on clip which has legs able to be pushed over a rib form in the roof cladding such 20 that the legs engage either side of the rib form whereupon the rib form or part of the rib form resides within a shaped recess between the legs, this shape recess conforming with the profile of the rib form residing therein. In a first aspect the invention provides a clip including a shaped recess, a body, 25 a mounting portion adapted to engage with a support structure for mounting structures above a roof surface, and legs adapted to engage about a rib form of roof cladding such that the legs engage either side of the rib form, whereupon at least part of the rib form resides within the shaped recess between the legs when engaged, and wherein the body and legs are formed integrally as a single unit. 30 In a preferred form the clip is formed of an elastomeric plastics material whereby the legs can splay apart when forced onto a rib form of roof cladding and return to substantially their original position when located on the rib form and thereby grip the rib form. 35 3 In one embodiment of the invention the clip includes a clamp means which is engageable with the legs when clipped onto the rib form to thereby retain the oppositely disposed legs from being moved apart. 5 According to a preferred embodiment of the invention the legs extend in a divergent manner away from the body, each leg having a foot portion which extends toward the direction in which the opposite leg extends. Preferably each foot has an inclined distal surface, said distal surfaces of the feet 10 forming a lead-in to the area between the oppositely disposed legs. in the preferred form the opposing feet of the legs, the legs and a bridging surface between the legs, define a shaped area which closely corresponds to the external profile of part of the rib form. 15 According to a preferred form of the clip the body includes a mounting portion which can engage in a tubular support element. According to a further preferred form of the clip, the body includes a further 20 mounting portion for engagement with part of a structure such as a post of a handrail construction for a walkway, In one form of the clip the body and legs are formed integrally in a single unit from an elastomeric plastics material. 25 In a second aspect the invention provides a method of securing a structure to a roof that has a rib form including the steps of: attaching clips adapted to engage about the rib form wherein the clips include body and legs that are integrally formed as a single unit, and attaching a support structure to the clips wherein the 30 structure is supported by the support structure.
4 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS In the following more detailed description of the invention in which embodiments of the invention will be described, reference will be made to the drawings in 5 which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clip, Figure 2 is an elevation view of the clip, Figure 3 is side elevation view of the clip, Figure 4 is an end view of the clip, 10 Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view of a rib form of a known long-run roof cladding with which the clip as shown in Figures 1 to 4 can be used, the rib form showing the connection between two adjacent cladding sheets, Figure 6 is an exploded view of the clips when forming part of a support structure and walkway, 15 Figure 7 is an illustration of a second form of the clip intended for support thereon of a conduit, Figure 8 is an elevation view of a third form of the clip intended for a quick clamp system, Figure 9 is an illustration of a fourth form of a clip intended to mount an 20 upright or post for a handrail of a walkway, Figure 10 is a view similar to Figure 6 but showing use of the fourth form of the clip, Figure 11 is an elevation view of an anchor bracket, Figure 12 is a perspective illustration of the anchor bracket installed on 25 the clip, Figure 13 is yet a further form of the clip being a modified form of the clip of Figure 7, Figure 14A shows an illustration of a clip according to a further embodiment, and 30 Figure 14B shows a top view of the clip shown in Figure 14A. MODES FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION Referring to Figures 1 to 4, the clip is shown in a basic form where it is intended 35 for clipping to a rib form of a roof cladding and engageable with some form of 5 structure as will hereinafter be described. In the preferred form of the invention the clip is formed from an elastomeric plastics material and it is formed as a single unit. The type of material chosen is one where only limited deformation of the legs of the clip occurs. In this way the construction of the clip permits it to be 5 forced onto a rib form of a roof but the legs do not flex sufficiently/readily to permit the clip to lift off the rib form. The clip 10 includes a body 11 from one end of which project, in a divergent manner, a pair of legs 12. The other end of the body 11 is preferably of angular 10 cross-section and provides a mounting portion 13 which can, as hereinafter described, engage in a tubular element of some form of support structure. At the distal end of each leg 12 there is provided an inwardly directed foot 14. Each foot 14 thus projects inwardly towards the other. A shaped recess is thus 15 formed by the inside surfaces 16 of the legs 12 a bridging surface 17 which extends therebetween and the profiled distal end surfaces 18 of the feet 14. The profiled surface 18 of each foot 14 preferably provides an inwardly inclined lead in surface that combine to provide a lead-in to the shaped recess 15 and thereby facilitate sufficient splaying apart of the legs 12 when the clip 10 is forced onto 20 the rib form of roof cladding to enable the clip to become located on the rib form. Figure 5 shows in cross-section a commercially available form of roof cladding commonly referred to as long-run and normally used in industrial/commercial applications. This cladding C includes a rib form F which, in the illustration, is the 25 rib form created by inter-engaging profiled edges Fa and Fb of two adjacent sheets S. One or more rib forms of this particular configuration are generally formed across the width of the sheet as is known in the art. The shaped recess 15 thus corresponds in shape and is of generally the same 30 dimensions as the cross-sectioned profile of top part of the rib form F. Thus, the bridging surface 17 and internal surfaces 16 of the legs 12 conform to the curved upper surface Sa and divergent side surfaces Sb of the top of the rib form F. The feet 14 engage into the waisted part W of the rib form F with the inclined surface of the distal end 18 of the foot 14 providing sufficient clearance for the foot 14 to 35 engage snugly in the waisted part W of the rib form F.
6 Consequently, in use of the clip, the lead-in surfaces of the distal ends 18 of the feet 14 are brought into contact with the divergent sides Sb of the rib form F. By applying a suitable downward pressure in the direction of arrow A (see Figure 2) 5 the legs 12 deform or splay apart sufficiently for the clip 10 to be pushed in direction 'A' until the feet 14 are located in the vicinity of the waisted part W whereupon the legs 12 snap or return to their initial position or substantially the initial position so that the feet 14 are engaged in the waisted part W of the rib form F. In such position the top of Sa the rib form F snugly engages within the 10 shaped recess 15 and against or closely adjacent to surface 17. Depending on the type of plastics material used to form the clip 10, the legs 12 may take some time to finally revert to the initial position. The "memory" of the material thus ensures that the clip 10 firmly engages on the rib form F both 15 following application and final settling onto the rib form. This is achieved with no damage to the rib form. Because of the width of the clip i.e. dimension D (see Figure 3) at least in the area of the legs 12 and the snug fit of the rib in the recess 15, the clip maintains 20 an orientation normal to the surface of the roof cladding. It, therefore, projects in a direction that is substantially aligned with a longitudinal axis of symmetry of the rib form F. Even when the clip is, in conjunction with a plurality of other clips, subjected to 25 the actions of an external force (e.g. wind acting on a structure connected to the clip) the clip resists separation from the rib form F. However, in a further embodiment of the invention a clamp can partially encircle the clip in the vicinity of the legs 12 so as to provide a mechanical means of preventing the legs from deforming and thereby releasing from the rib form F. 30 For example the stainless steel anchor bracket 40 of Figure 11 can be used to form the clamp 41 shown in Figure 12. The anchor bracket 40 has a pair of divergently positioned plates 41 joined by a connector piece 41a. The plates 41 can be folded into the form shown in Figure 12 to partially encircle the legs 12 of 35 clip 10. Openings 42 are formed in plates 41 and can receive a tek screw 44 to 7 fasten the anchor plate 40 to the legs 12. Alternatively one opening can (as shown in Figure 12) have a nut 45 welded thereover and a threaded bolt 46 engaged therein and screwed inwardly to apply a pressure to leg 12 to hold it against a deflection which may cause clip 10 to release from the profile. 5 The clip, therefore, can be applied to a metal roofing system without any penetration through the roofing cladding. The clip relies on the interaction of the profile of the reform in the recess 15 to maintain the clip in place on the roofing. The clip can, therefore, provide the basis for attachment to the roof of structures 10 such as metal walkways, supports for services such as air conditioning systems, extractors, fall protection systems and the like. In Figure 6 the clip 10 is shown, by example, for the mounting of a structure to which a walkway can be mounted to a roof R. As illustrated, the roof R (which is 15 only shown in part) is formed from long-run metal cladding that has a plurality of rib forms F formed as an integral part thereof. As shown, a plurality of clips 10 are used to mount the walkway to the roof R. In a preferred form of the invention clips will be spaced along a rib form F at centres 20 of about 2400mm. As illustrated, a clip 10 can be inserted into tubular elements 21 which forms part of an "H" shaped support 20. A pair of the tubular elements 21 are, therefore, coupled by a cross member 22. The distance between the tubular elements 21 is 25 such as to correspond with the centre distances of two rib forms F. The mounting portion 13 of the clip 10 when inserted into the tubular element 21 is fastened therein by a mechanical fastener extending through an aperture in or formed in the tubular element 21. The mechanical fastener can be a Tek 30 fastener of known construction. Clips 10a in an inverted orientation are also inserted into the opposite ends of the tubular elements 21 and fastened therein by one or more fasteners.
8 As illustrated in the drawing, there will be three supports 20 for the length of the walkway as illustrated. The upper clips 10a thus are clip fitted to a rail 23 of a support frame 24, each rail 23 having a shaped projecting portion 25 that is generally the same as the rib form and thereby can snap fit into the shaped 5 recess 15. The rails are maintained in a spaced apart parallel fashion by cross-members 27. Fitted to and spaced along the length of each of the rails is a pair of angular sockets 28 in which engage the lower ends of box section posts 29 of a handrail 10 construction 30. These posts 29 will be fixed to the projections by suitable mechanical fasteners. A non-slip walkway surface 31 such as perforated sheet metal, expanded sheet metal, mesh, etc. will be fitted to the support frame in order to complete the 15 walkway, In a preferred form of the invention the rails 23 are mechanically fixed to the tubular elements 21 by clamping plates 33. These are of a cranked form having a first mounting portion 34 which is mechanically fastened to the rail and a 20 mounting portion 35 is mechanically fixed to the tubular element 21, though such fixings can also engage through the tubular element 21 into the mounting portion 13 of the clip 10 to thereby further anchor the clip 10 to the support 20. The clip 10 can thus play an integral part in a modular walkway construction. The 25 clip not only provides a means of fixing the support structure 20 to the roof R but also plays an integral part in mounting the walkway to the support structure 20. It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the support structure 20 can also be used for mounting of a support frame or the like used to support services 30 such as air conditioning units, extractors, fall protection systems and any other structure to be fitted to the roof. All such structures are, however, mounted a distance away from the surface of the roof by the supports 20 thereby ensuring that a good clear space exists between the structures and the roof surface to enable cleaning of the roof surface to take place. 35 9 It will also be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the clip 10 is open to modification in order to achieve further functionality. For example, in Figure 7 there is shown a form of the clip having a support element 36 which extends from the side of the clip and onto which a conduit can be engaged in curved recess or 5 saddle 37. This conduit could be used to convey liquid used in the cleaning of the roof or it can be liquid used in conjunction with services such as air conditioning, solar heating panels and the like. An alternative form of this example is shown in Figure 13. 10 In Figure 8 the clip is attached to a snap-lock type clip 38 into which an element or part of an element with a curved cross-section can fit in a snap lock type action. A snap-lock clip of this type could be used with the side element 36 of Figure 7 in place of saddle 37. 15 Yet a further example is shown in Figure 9 where the clip 10 includes a second mounting portion 13' onto which the lower end of post 29 of a handrail construction 30 can be engaged and fixed. The use of this clip is illustrated in Figure 10. 20 Yet further configurations of the clip in the area of the mounting portion 13 to provide an anchorage or fixing point for other structures, will be apparent to those skilled in the art. A clip is thus provided which can be firmly fixed to the rib profile of a roof cladding 25 and provides a fixing point. The clip may be fixed without any penetration or damage to the roof cladding, or alternatively, may be fixed via an existing penetration. The clip can thus be used as the mounting point for structures such as walkways, services, support frames and the like but in doing so can form part of a component support that holds the walkway or other structure away from the 30 roof surface so as to not only reduce the possibility of damage to the roof but also provide sufficient clearance for washing and cleaning (brushing) operations to be carried out on the roof surface. According to a further embodiment, a clip is provided that can be affixed to a 35 portion of the roof that already has a fixing attached thereto. That is, a 10 penetration has already been formed in the roof, and the fixing attached through the penetration is removed and replaced with a clip according to this embodiment. 5 Figure 14A shows a side view of a clip according to this embodiment located next to an existing fixing, while Figure 14B shows a top view of the clip. A known type of fixing 1401 is shown in Figure 14A attached to the outer cladding 1403 of the roof 1405. A clamp portion 1407 is located between the fixing 1401 10 and a profile 1409 of the roof cladding 1403. A clip 1411 according to this embodiment is shown as a replacement for such a fixing. 15 The existing fixing, such as a Tek fastener, is removed with its clamp portion from the existing penetration. A clip according to this embodiment is placed over the profile 1409 of the roof cladding 1403. In this embodiment, the legs of the clip are not required to be flexible as the clip is fixed in position over the profile 1409 by using a fastener. However, it will be understood that the legs of the clip may 20 be flexible so as to provide additional gripping means over a suitably shaped profile, as previously described in relation to earlier embodiments. The clip 1411 includes a body 1417. Located at a first end of the body is a first shaped recess that corresponds in shape and is of generally the same 25 dimensions as the profile 1409 of the roof cladding 1404 to which the clip is to be attached. In this example, the profile is trapezoidal. However, it will be appreciated that clips can be designed to attach to various other types of profile. At a second end of the body 1417 that opposes the first end of the body is 30 located a second shaped recess 1413, which is substantially the same cross sectional profile as the shaped recess 15 described above in relation to Figures 1 and 2. The shaped recess 1413 can be used in a similar way to the recesses located in the upper clips 10a described above. That is, the shaped recess 1413 can be clip fitted to a rail 23 of a support frame 24 to provide a modular walkway 35 construction as described herein before.
11 The clip 1411 is attached to the profile 1409 of the roof cladding 1403 by placing the clip 1411 over the profile and either using the existing Tek fastener that was previously used, or by using any other suitable fastener, to attach the clip to the 5 roof cladding. The clip 1411 includes a central cavity 1415 that runs through the centre of the body 1417 from the point where the body 1417 meets the second shaped recess 1413 down towards a point just above the first shaped recess. That is, the central cavity does not run all the way through the body but stops at a surface provided for the fastener to apply force to the clip when being attached to 10 the roof cladding. The central cavity 1415 is configured to allow a fastener to enter through the central cavity and attach to the roof 1405 through the cladding 1403, as shown in Figures 14A and 14B. The clip 1411 as described in the above embodiment provides improved weather 15 tight sealing around the existing penetration by completely covering over the profile of the roof cladding to which it is attached and through which the penetration exists. This makes it harder for liquid to enter the penetration and cause damage to the underlying surfaces. In addition, the clip provides a mechanism for attaching a modular walkway to the top of the roof by providing an 20 additional recess for attaching the modular portions of the walkway.
