COMPLETE SPECIFICATION TO BE COMPLETED BY THE APPLICANT NAME OF APPLICANT: ACTUAL INVENTOR: ADDRESS FOR SERVICE: INVENTION TITLE: DETAILS OF ASSOCIATED PROVISIONAL APPLICATION NO: Hugho Tighe Hugho Tighe Peter Maxwell and Associates Level 6 Pitt Street SYDNEY NSW 2000 MARKING OUT TEMPLATE WITH
LEVEL
2006 906 007 25 October 2006 Australia The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me:m:\docs\20071030\129875.doc COMS ID No: ARCS-165980 Received by IP Australia: Time 13:38 Date 2007-10-24 24-10-07;13:33 ;612 9247 9945 6/ 12 2 O This invention relates to templates for marking out the boundary of a 0 cut-out in a wall or other surface for installing mounting clips for power points, light switches and the like.
The current method of marking out the boundary of a cut-out in a wall or Cc, other sheet material for installing mounting clips such as C-shaped mounting
NO
Cc clips for power points or light switches includes the step of:placing a level below the lower boundary of the cutout, (ii) placing an inverted C-shaped clip on the level and marking out the inner periphery of the clip on the wall to define the lower boundary and part of the side boundaries of the cut-out, and (iii) inverting the clip and, if need be, raising the level to the lower boundary of the cut-out, marking out the inner periphery of the inverted clip on the wall to define the upper boundary and the remainder of the side boundaries of the cut-out.
A drawback of this prior art approach is that it is rather cumbersome as the user has to control the position of the level, maintain the clip on the level and mark out the cut-out whilst not changing the position of the level or the clip.
There is, therefore, a need for an improved way of marking out such cutouts and it is an object of the present invention to provide a template incorporating a level which allows the user to mark out and level the mounting clip at the same time by doing away with the current need for a separate level and mounting clip.
24/10/07 COMS ID No: ARCS-165980 Received by IP Australia: Time 13:38 Date 2007-10-24 00 3 According to the invention there is provided a template device for C) marking out a cut-out comprising a body, a horizontal level bubble carried by the body and a cut-out template formed within the body, wherein the body has opposed first and second sides, a first side having one or more recesses and a second side having a corresponding number of projections, the or each recess of a first template device being interlockable with the or each projection of a second template device to create a multiple template device.
O
N The template device may also have a vertical bubble.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood and put into practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings in which:- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a template device according to one embodiment of the invention.
The template device 10 shown in Fig. 1 has a body portion 11 which has a top face 12, a bottom face 13, left side 14 and right side 15. Cut away portion 16 enables the device 10 to be easily positioned around electrical wires projecting from a wall or other surface.
Curved templates 17 and 18 are used for marking out the sides of a cutout for a contemporary electrical mounting clip. A horizontal level bubble 21 is mounted in the top face 12 and a vertical bubble 22 is mounted in the left side 14 which enables the user to level the template device in both the vertical and horizontal positions.
The left side 14 has recesses 23 and 24 and the right side 15 has projections 25 and 26. The recesses 23 and 24 of one template device 10 can be interlocked with the projections 25 and 26 of another template device 10 to create a double template. A triple template device can also be created in a 29/10/08 00 4 similar manner. The dimensions of each template device 10 are such that the C) multiple devices provide 200mm spacing between centres.
q Adjacent to the top face 12, there are four reference holes 27, 28, 29 q and 30. Hole 27 receives a screw by means of which the template device 10 is rotatably secured to the wall or other surface. Hole 28 is a template point for a ¢q downlight at a radius of 46mm, hole 29 is template port for a 100mm fan and hole 30 is a template point for a 125mm fan.
cAdjacent the right-hand side 15 of the template device 10 there is a slot 31 by means of which the template device 10 may be hung on a peg or nail on a wall for storage purposes.
In use, the template device 10 is positioned on the wall and levelled by reference to the horizontal bubble 21. The templates 17 and 18 are then marked on the wall to define the sides of the cut-out and the top and bottom of the body provide templates for the top and bottom of the cut-out. The template device is then removed. The hole is then cut in the wall, the mounting clip inserted and the power point or light switch installed.
When using the template device 10 to mark out circles utilising the reference holes 28, 29 and 30, the device is screwed to the wall or other surface by a screw passing through the hole 27. A pencil is then positioned in the selected reference point 28, 29 or 30 and the device rotated to mark out circles which have diameters of 92mm for downlights and 200mm and 250mm for ceiling fans.
Various modifications may be made in details of design and construction without departing from the scope and ambit of the invention.

Claims (5)
- 2. A template device according to claim 1 wherein the cut-out template comprises two spaced apart arcs and the cut-out is marked by the two arcs and the top and bottom of the body.
- 3. A template device according to claim 1 further including a central recess through which electrical cables can protrude.
- 4. A template device according to claim 1 further including a plurality of reference points along the body, one reference point being adapted to receive a screw for securing the template device on the wall or other surface in a rotatable manner, a cut-out being marked on the wall or other surface by inserting a pencil in one of the other reference points and rotating the device about the screw to mark out a circular cut-out. A template device according to claim 4 wherein there are four reference points, one for receiving the screw, one at a radius of 46mm, another at a radius of 100mm and the third at a radius of 125mm for marking out circular cut-outs as desired. 29/10/08 00
