RELATED ART: NAME OF APPLICANT: Muthusamy Velayudam ACTUAL INVENTOR(S): Muthusamy Velayudam ADDRESS FOR SERVICE: INVENTION TITLE: LORD AND COMPANY, Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys, of 4 Douro Place, West Perth, Western Australia, 6005, AUSTRALIA.
"WEEDING APPARATUS" DETAILS OF ASSOCIATED PROVISIONAL APPLICATION NO'S: Australian Provisional Patent Application Number 2006905850 filed on 23 October 2006 The following Statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me:
STITLE
C.)
0 "WEEDING APPARATUS" The present invention relates to a device for removing weeds.
00 In accordance with one aspect of the present invention there is provided a weeding apparatus comprising: a shaft having a first end and a second end; a weed engaging portion being mounted at the second end of the shaft, the weed engaging portion comprising a member having a slot therein; wherein, when the handle is held by a user and the shaft directed downwardly and away from the user, the shaft is of a length such that the weed engaging portion is adjacent the ground, and the slot can be oriented generally towards the user so that pulling the weeding apparatus towards the user engages a weed in the slot, thereby allowing the weed to be pulled.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a weeding apparatus in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is a side view of the weeding apparatus of Figure 1 showing the weeding apparatus in use engaging a weed.
0 Referring to the Figures, there is shown a weeding apparatus 10 comprising a shaft 12 Shaving a handle 14 at a first end thereof and a weed engaging portion 16 at a second o end thereof. The weeding apparatus 10 is designed to be used from a position at a distance above the ground, such as when standing. The shaft 12 is therefore ,i constructed to be of a length such that when the weeding apparatus is held by the 00oO handle 14 by the user with the shaft 12 extending downwardly and forwardly of the tN user, the weed engaging portion 16 is adjacent the ground (as shown in Figure A Smeans to adjust the length of the shaft 12 may also be provided to account for users of different heights or for people using the apparatus in a sitting position, such as in a wheelchair.
The weed engaging portion 16 comprises an arcuate member 22 and a plate member the plate member 20 having a slot 18 therein into which is received the stem of the weed adjacent to or below the ground. The plate member 20 is connected to the shaft 12 by the arcuate member 22. In the embodiment shown, the plate member 20 is generally elliptical in shape with the slot 18 extending from a first side thereof along the long axis of the ellipse. The slot 18 is substantially V-shaped. The plate member is connected to the arcuate member 22 on a second opposed side. The plate member 20 has a thickness such that it does not cut the weed when the slot 18 receives the stem of the weed. It will be appreciated that the shape of the plate member 20 may be varied as long as the slot 18 remains in the correct orientation.
The arcuate member 22 is curved such that when the shaft 12 is held extending downwardly and forwardly of the user and the slot 18 is oriented towards the user, the plate member 20 is oriented generally horizontally, as shown in Figure 2.
O In use, the weeding apparatus 10 is positioned as shown in Figure 2, adjacent a weed to be pulled, with the weed between the weed engaging portion 16 and the user. The C) weeding apparatus 10 is then moved towards the user such that the weed is received in the slot 18 adjacent to or below the ground level. The weed is thereby engaged in CI the slot 18 and can be pulled from the ground by pulling the weeding apparatus 00 Slongitudinally toward the user.
(N
Modifications and variations as would be apparent to a skilled addressee are deemed to be within the scope of the present invention.
