Description
Australian Patents Act 1990 Regulation 3.2 00 0 0 ORIGINAL COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT Invention Title A jamb The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- P/00/0 11 5102 P \WPI 1SilNM62 5 6 lnnmlm h I- I, 7UII 2tlN7 V -I- A JAMB Field of the Invention 00 0The present invention relates generally to doorjambs for finishing a door opening.
SBackground to the Invention Installing doorjambs in door openings is labour-intensive and complex. Where architraves are not used to finish off adjacent periphery of the opening, it is difficult to obtain a seamless and durable join between jamb and plasterboard.
The present invention seeks to ameliorate one or more of the abovementioned disadvantages.
Summary of the Invention According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a doorjamb component for finishing a door opening, the doorjamb component including: an elongate jamb body including a pair of spaced apart side faces, one side face being in the form of a finish face and having a recess disposed thereon which is adapted to receive a door edge portion, the elongate jamb body further including a pair of spaced apart end faces, at least a portion of one or each end face being disposed at a selected angle from the side faces so as to form a generally wedge-shaped niche for receiving plaster at the or each end in use, wherein at least the angled portion of the or each end face includes one or more surface formations so as to facilitate engagement of the plaster with the end faces.
The elongate jamb body may be generally rectangular or trapezoidal in crosssection.
P WPIX (S%1 NM%'Src 22I-46 I. Inc--lc JI,,h Ikw 17 11K2117 -2- Preferably both end faces are disposed at the selected angle from the side faces.
Preferably both end faces include one or more of the surface formations.
(Ni 00 0Preferably the or each end face includes a return edge portion adjacent the finish face, 0 wherein the angled portion of the or each end face is disposed adjacent the return edge.
(Ni The surface formations may be in the form of grooves, preferably extending along a lo length of the elongate jamb body.
Preferably the recess on the finish face is a rebate to receive a door edge of a hinged door.
Preferably one side face is a mounting face which includes a hollow for locating the mounting face on a wall structural element.
Preferably the hollow is a channel extending along a length of the elongate jamb body.
The elongate jamb body may be constructed from timber, preferably finger joint pine.
Preferably the angled portions of the end faces include a coating to facilitate adhesion of plaster to the angled portions.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of installing a doorjamb component, the method including the steps of: mounting an elongate jamb body having a generally rectangular cross-section and including a pair of spaced apart side faces, one side face being a finish face having a recess disposed thereon which is adapted to receive a door edge portion, the elongate jamb body further including a pair of spaced apart end faces, at least a portion of one or each end face being disposed at a selected angle from the side faces so as to form a generally wedgeshaped niche for receiving plaster at the or each end in use, wherein at least the angled P OAPTI X'SW NMSNpc2 271QI In J-m, d.h 17,IIK211(7 S-3portion of the or each end face includes one or more surface formations so as to facilitate engagement of the plaster with the end faces; setting plaster in the generally wedge-shaped niche so as to form a planar wall face coplanar with an adjacent wall element.
(Ni 00 SBrief Description of the Drawings C-I In order to enable a clearer understanding of the invention, preferred embodiments l0 will hereinafter be described with reference to drawings, and in those drawings: Fig. I is a section view in plan view of a jamb component according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention; Figs 2 to 4 are isometric views ofjamb components in accordance with preferred embodiments of the present invention; Fig. 5 is a timber stud wall assembly which includes a jamb component in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the timber stud wall assembly itself forming a preferred embodiment of the present invention; and Fig. 6 is a steel stud wall assembly which includes ajamb component in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the steel stud wall assembly itself forming a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments Referring to Figures 1 6 there is shown a jamb component generally indicated at 10 which includes an elongate jamb body 12, having a pair of spaced apart side faces 1 1, 13 and a pair of spaced apart end faces 18 and 19. Side face I 1 is in the form of a mounting face 14 which facilitates mounting the elongate jamb body 12 to a structure 44, P OATDI KCS LNMSpc cI207 I9, In ct-c In-,fal-lnO, J h d 17/'2I -4- 46, and side face 13 is a finishing face 16. End faces 18 and 19 include portions 15 and 17 which are disposed at an angle relative to the side walls so that the cross section takes a generally trapezoidal shape. Portions 15 and 17 are angled so that when assembled, a wedge shaped niche 23 is provided to receive plaster 24 in use, to facilitate a seamless join between an end 26 of plasterboard 22 and finishing face 16 of the elongate jamb body.
00 C, The end faces 18 and 19 include surface formations 25 so as to improve engagement of plaster 24 with the end faces 18 and 19. This reduces cracking of the N plaster 24 at the end 26 of the plasterboard 22. The surface formations 25 are in the form of grooves 50 which extend along the elongate body 12.
A return edge portion 28 is provided at a junction 29 of the finishing face 16 and the end face 18 which supports plaster 24 against chipping as a result of strikes from passing traffic. The return edge portion 28 is approximately 2mm in width and is parallel to the plasterboard 22.
The elongate jamb body 12 includes a recess 31 disposed on the finish face 16.
The recess 3 1 is in the form of a rebate 30 so as, in use, to receive a hinged door edge (not shown).
The elongate jamb body 12 further includes a locating means 40 in the form of a hollow 41 in the form of an elongate channel 42. When mounted a structural member such as timber stud 44 or steel stud 46 is received in the channel 42.
The jamb body 12 is milled from a rectangular length of finger joint pine timber and is coated with a coating to improve engagement of plaster with end faces 18, 19.
The mounting face 14 includes lateral faces 7, 9 against which, in use, the plasterboard 22 abuts to inhibit movement between the jamb body 12 and the plasterboard 22.
P \PIX :SILNM6 I2 I IncV16 J-nh d- 17A IN I I 1 Advantageously, the jamb component 10 is a key component in making a durable and seamless joint between jamb body 12 and plasterboard 22 because of the ease in setting the plaster joint. The plaster 24 engages with the surface formations 50 in such a fashion as to inhibit shrinkage from the jamb body 12.
00 0In operation the mounting face 14 of the jamb body 12 is located by channel 42 on the structural member 44, 46 adjacent or abutting the plasterboard 22. The jamb body 12 is fastened in place on member 44, 46, then the plaster 24 is set in the wedge-shaped niche Ni 23, along with paper tape as is the norm for plaster setting. The plaster keys or engages 0io with the grooves 50 to reduce shrinkage, and the return edge 28 inhibits cracking of plaster from passing traffic strikes.
The reference to any prior art in this specification is not, and should not be taken as an acknowledgment or any form of suggestion that that prior art forms part of the common general knowledge in Australia or elsewhere.
Throughout this specification and the claims which follow, unless the context requires otherwise, the word "comprise", and variations such as "comprises" or "comprising", will be understood to imply the inclusion of a stated integer or step or group of integers or steps but not the exclusion of any other integer or step or group of integers or steps.
