Description
AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION Standard Patent Applicant(s): FERAG AG Invention Title: Tool for heat-sealing and separating of continuously conveyed film made of a thermoplastic material The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method for performing it known to me/us: 2 TOOL FOR HEAT-SEALING AND SEPARATING OF CONTINUOUSLY CONVEYED FILM MADE OF A THERMOPLASTIC MATERIAL (c CI Field of the invention eC The invention is in the field of packaging technology and concerns an tool which is suitable for heat-sealing and Sseparating continuously conveyed film made of a thermoplastic material.
Background of the invention Known devices comprising tools of the above mentioned type are used e.g. for processing a tubular film material being created by longitudinal heat-sealing of at least one quasi endless web of plastic film polyethylene or polypropylene film) in a continuous procedure and in which flat objects are arranged in spaced succession. The known processing consists in transversally heat-sealing the film tube between the objects and in separating it directly after or substantially simultaneously with the heatsealing, such that by means of each heat-sealing and separating step one object is individually packaged.
The mentioned method is applied to package e.g. individual printed products such as newspapers or magazines or small stacks of printed products into mostly transparent plastic film. It is however also possible to package other objects in the same manner, using correspondingly adapted devices of the described type or to produce individual empty bags by transversal heat-sealing and separation of superposed webs of film.
In such devices for heat-sealing and separating, the films N.\Melbourne\Cases\Patent\72000-72999\P72468.AU\SpeciB\P72468.AU.GHSPEC.doc 23/07/07 -3- Q) are usually held between a heated tool and a counter tool, wherein the two tools are moved along a short distance (sealing path) together with the film. For this purpose Sthe devices usually comprise a plurality of tools and a plurality of counter tools which are arranged revolving in opposite directions and are driven in a mutually C synchronized manner, such that, upstream of the sealing M path, the tools and counter tools move towards the films C from both sides, that during their movement along the sealing path tools and counter tools are pressed together, and, downstream of the sealing path, tools and counter tools move away from the films. The circuits of the tools and counter tools are often circular, but may have other shapes.
The tools are bars and reach over the width of the films to be heat-sealed and separated. Advantageously the tools are not only equipped for heat-sealing and separating but also for pinning the films down. This is advantageous especially for films, which, before they are clamped between tool and counter tool, are positioned at a relatively large distance from each other. The tools thus comprise e.g. three elements, which are advantageously movable in relation to each other perpendicularly to the films to be heat-sealed and separated. A central element is equipped as separating element and the elements arranged upstream and downstream of the central separating element serve for pinning down and heat-sealing, or the central element is heatable and simultaneously serves as heat-sealing and separating element, the elements upstream and downstream of the separating/heating element merely serving for pinning down the film material.
An example for a device of the mentioned kind is described in the publication WO 2005/118402. This device comprises a plurality of tools which substantially consist of a heatsealing/separating element and advantageously pinning-down N\Melbourne\Cases\Patent\72000-72999\P72468.AU\Specia\P72468 .AU.GSPEC.doc 23/07/07 4 elements arranged on the upstream and the downstream side of the heat-sealing/separating element, wherein the pinning-down elements are arranged resiliently in a M direction perpendicular to the film material relative to the heat-sealing/separating elements. As counter tool a suitably coated conveying belt is provided, which is C slightly deflected through the pressure exerted by the C heat-sealing/separating elements during the heat-sealing Cl and separating process. The heat-sealing/separating elements comprise two heated heat-sealing surfaces, which Smeet in an obtuse angle to form a separating edge where they meet. The heat-sealing surfaces have a width in conveying direction of approximately 0.5 to 1 cm.
The heat-sealing/separating elements described above usually comprise a steel bar with a ceramic core. They use a lot of heat energy (according to WO 2005/118402 approximately 500 W per bar), are costly in production and relatively heavy.
Brief description of the invention It is the object of the invention to create a tool of the named kind, which is suitable for transverse heat-sealing and separation of films, especially in cooperation with a conveying belt as counter tool and which enables as reliable such heat-sealing and separation as known such tools. Therein the tool according to the invention is to be able to be produced in a simpler process than the known tools and is to be able to combine large output with small energy consumption. The tool according to the invention is to be especially suited for being used in the device as described in publication WO 2005/118402, it may however, also be applied in other devices which serve the same purpose.
The tool according to the invention is based on the N\Melbourne\Cases\Paent\72000-72999\P72468.AU\SpecisP72468.AU.GHSPEC.doc 23/07/07 Q)finding that the heat-sealing surfaces of the known heatsealing/separating elements, which meet in the separating edge, only act on films in the direct proximity of the M separating edge when they are used in co-operation with a conveying belt or a correspondingly equipped counter tool, C i.e. only a small section of their width is actually used C and therefore the sealing surfaces could be considerably M less wide.
The tool according to the invention is therefore not bar- Sshaped like known tools but consists of a plurality of thin layers which are juxtaposed in sandwich-manner, e.g.
in parallel to each other. Two outermost layers of the sandwich construction are formed of a folded sheet, advantageously of stainless steel, the fold edge of which serves as separating edge. Between the two parts of the covering sheet, which meet at the fold edge, a heating element is fitted, which comprises an equally flat and slim support made of an electrically insulating material and a heating wire wound around the support. The multilayer tool has the shape of a sword and is of a thickness which may be 2 mm or even less. The outer curvature radius of the covering sheet at the fold edge is e.g. 1 mm or less.
The tool according to the invention is able to be produced in a very simple process. Furthermore it is considerably lighter than the known tools, which serve the same purpose, by which its operation in circulation can be effected with simpler means and with less energy. Heatsealing and separation using the tool according to the invention necessitates relevantly less heating energy than this is the case for known tools. A further relevant advantage of the tool according to the invention is the fact that, due to its small width, it is able to carry out transverse heat-sealing and separation when the distances between the objects to be packaged are very small and even N:\Melbourne\Caaes\Patent\72000-72999\P72468.AU\Specis\P72468.AU.GHSPEC.doc 23/07/07 6 Q- when the objects are of a relevant thickness of e.g.
several centimetres. With the tool according to the c-i invention it is actually possible to package e.g.
Smagazines which are conveyed at distances of only 4 to mm from each other. Such small distances between the objects to be packaged results, at identical conveying Cq speeds, in larger output than is possible using a device Cequipped with known tools or in lower speed for an (C identical output. In addition it economizes on film material.
As above described for the tools according to the publication WO 2005/118402, the tool according to the invention is advantageously equipped with means for pinning-down being arranged resiliently in a direction perpendicularly to the film to be processed in relation to the centrally arranged heat-sealing/separating element. It is also possible to provide only one pinning-down element.
Brief description of the drawings A preferred embodiment of the tool according to the invention for heat-sealing and separating of continuously conveyed film made of a thermoplastic material is described in detail in connection with the following Figs., wherein: Figure 1 shows the tool according to the invention, viewed parallel to the conveying direction of the films to be processed; Figure 2 is a cross section through the tool according to the invention; Figure 3 is a partly exploded representation of the tool according to the invention; NM\Melbourne\Caaea\Patent\72000-72999\P72468.AU\Specis\P72468.AU.GHSPEC.doc 23/07/07 -7- Q)Figure 4 shows a further embodiment of the separating edge of the tool according to the invention.
M Detailed description of the invention Figure 1 shows a preferred embodiment of the tool C according to the invention viewed parallel to the Sconveying direction of the films to be processed. The tool C 1 has a length L, which at least corresponds to the width of the films to be processed, and a height H of e.g. 2 to cm. The covering sheet 2 is advantageously folded twice in the same direction, wherein one of the fold edges forms the separating edge 3. On the fold edge 4 opposite the separating edge 3, the covering sheet comprises two openings 5 through which the heating wire extends. On the one side of the tool which is visible in Fig. i, the longitudinal edge regions of the covering sheet overlap and are possibly connected with each other with suitable means not shown spot welding).
Figure 2 shows the tool 1 according to Fig. 1 in cross section. Its elements are denominated with the same reference numerals as in Fig. i. In Fig. 2 the overlapping longitudinal edge regions 2.1 and 2.2 of the covering sheet 2 are clearly visible.
On the inside of the twice-folded covering sheet 2, two insulating layers 10 are arranged and between the insulating layers the heating element, which comprises a flat support 11 made of an electrically insulating material and a heating wire 6 wound around the support 11.
Figure 3 shows the components of the tool according to the invention in a partly exploded representation, from which the heating wire 6 wound around the support 11 is clearly visible.
N\Melbourne\Caes\Paten\72000-72999\P72468.A\SpeciB\P72468.AU.GHSPEC.doc 23/07/07 8 Q- As mentioned above, the covering sheet 2 is e.g. made of stainless steel and has a thickness of approximately 0.4 mm (0.3 to 0.6 mm). The two insulating layers 10 and the Ssupport 11 consist e.g. of fibre-cement (commercially available e.g. under the trade name of "Eternit") and have a thickness in the same range as the thickness of the ^C covering sheet 2. The total thickness D of the tool can Cthus be as small as approximately 2 mm, wherein with the ^C named materials a sufficient stability for operation of the tool is achieved all the same. The fold edge of Scovering sheet 2, which forms the separating edge 3, hereby has an outer curvature radius of approximately 1 mm.
The insulating layer 10 and the support 11 are advantageously arranged on the inside of the folded covering sheet in such a manner that a cavity 20 is formed in the region of the separating edge. This means that the insulating layers 10 and the support 11 are arranged such that their longitudinal edges directed towards the separating edge 3 are distanced from the inner surface of the covering sheet, wherein advantageously the distance between the covering sheet 2 and the longitudinal edge is larger for the support 11 than for the insulating layers It is not necessary for the arrangement of insulating layers 10 and support 11 in the region of the fold edge of covering sheet 2 to be symmetrical, as shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 shows an asymmetrical embodiment in which the longitudinal edge of one insulating layer 10 is distanced further from the separating edge 3 of the cover sheet than the longitudinal edge of the other insulating layer 10, by which an even smaller curvature radius 0.5 mm) for the covering sheet 2 is made possible.
The tool as substantially shown in Figs. 1 to 3 can be N.\Mebourne\Ca.es\Patent\72000-72999\P72468.AU\Specis\P?2468.AU.GHPEC.doc 23/07/07 9 operated at a length L of 50 cm and at an operating temperature of approximately 200 to 250°C with a heating -s power of merely approximately 200 to 250 W, wherein M initial heating of the region of the separating edge to 200 0 C is achieved in merely approximately 3 seconds (to C 250*C in approximately 5 seconds).
C Further exemplified embodiments of the inventive tool C< comprise the following characteristics: C The covering sheet is folded only once and the edge opposite the separating edge is covered with other means, e.g. a cap made of plastic material, or is open; The insulating elements 10 are not designed as independent parts but as corresponding coatings of the inside of the covering sheet; The heating wire is not extending through the covering sheet on the edge opposite the separating edge but laterally; The covering sheet only consists of metal in the region of the separating edge, the lateral parts of it consisting of an electrically insulating material and functioning as insulating layers also.
In this specification, except where the context requires otherwise, the words "comprise", "comprises", and "comprising" means "include", "includes", and "including", respectively. That is, when the invention is described or defined as comprising specified features, various embodiments of the same invention may also include additional features.
