Description

DESCRIPTION
0 This invention relates to an innovative method of washing and cleaning Shipping Containers received and stored at international shipping ports utilising an automatic, rn motorised method to thoroughly clean all external surfaces suitable to achieve quarantine standards.
oVisual inspection and close examination of indivudual shipping containers is presently the sole means of detecting the presence of external contamination in the O form of organic or inorganic soil, animal and plant material including eggs, insects, spiders, snails, moths, birds, bird nests, bird droppings, animals and animal faeces.
Once contamination is detected, the subject shipping container must undergo extensive washing and cleaning to the satisfaction of quarantine officers only achieved by further visual inspection.
The present method employed to clean and wash the shipping containers is by manual intervention and manual application of high pressure hoses or devices attached to hoses which may be hand held of fixed using varying but extreme volumes of water under pressure aided by brushes, brooms or similar apparatus to blast, sweep, dislodge and flush contaminants from the external surfaces, pockets, hinges, twist lock mechanisms and frames. These methods are labour intensive and potentially unsafe due to the close proximity that cleaning operators are required to be in contact with steel shipping containers suspended on platforms or from crane like apparatus on wet and slippery surfaces in an environment where airborne water spray and droplets contaminated with detergents, surfactants, disinfectants, plus contaminated matter increase the risk of ill health if inhaled, ingested or swallowed.
This invention consists of a rectangular tunnel like structure fabricated from corrosion resistent material such as stainless steel and with rapid opening roller doors and curtains at entry and exit to contain water spray and in the case of curtains, to aid surface cleaning. Steel shipping containers are loaded onto chain conveyor at the entry loading dock and are automatically transported through the tunnel and the various compartments consisting of spraying and brushing chambers containing fixed and rotating spraying heads, rotating and fixed brushes and curtain devices preset to thoroughly remove surface contamination with fully recycled and sanitised water without human intervention.
SContaminants and solid matter removed from containers during the process, will be Scollected in a sludge compartment connected to the wash tunnel. Solid matter separated from the water will be mechanically macerated and stored or compressed for disposal. Waste water will be reclaimed by a combination of floatation, sludge Cc settlement, filtration, aeration and hydrocyclone separation then recycled. Before reuse, wastewater will be sanitised using chlorine, UV or other approved method. To aid identification of each washed shipping container for quarantine purpose, a camera can be mounted above the tunnel exit to capture the registered container number for record purposes by port operators or quarantine officers.
