ODESCRIPTION
This invention is designed to controll the operation of a 12V compressor fitted to many 4WD vehicles for inflating tyres.
12V Compressors are fitted to 4WD vehicles for many purposes but the main is for re-inflating tyres after beach or off road driving. They are simply turned on or off by means of a switch/relay and are either pumping or not. Some compressors do come with gauges to monitor the pressure in the line but are not capable of stopping or starting the compressor at certain pressures.
Currently to inflate tyres, the hose is connected to the compressor the other end onto the tyres valve and the compressor turned on, at various stages (usually timed) the hose is removed, pressure checked with a tyre pressure gauge if more pressure is required the hose is re-atttched the process repeated.
This invention is designed to automatically switch the compressor on and off to reach a desired tyre pressure as set by buttons and a display screen. It does this as follows: The invention once turned on monitors the pressure at the compressors air outlet.
Once it sees a pressure higher than 8psi it assumes that the hose has been connected to a deflated tyre and will automatically switch the compressor on. Due various factors such as tyre size and compressor hose length, the pressure seen at the compressor may be substantially higher than at the tyre it self. The invention takes this into account by automatically stopping the compressor, re-measuring the pressure and calculating the difference between the pressure read while the compressor was running and while it was stopped, it will store this value continually re-analyse it. It will make these checks every 45 seconds and once the pressure is within 6psi of the target pressure it will re-check every 20 seconds to enable the controller to inflate the tyre as close as possible to the target pressure.
Once the target pressure is reached the compressor is stopped, an alarm is sounded to indicate the tyre is inflated and will wait for the compressor hose to be removed from the tyre and if it is attatched to another tyre the process will repeat again or the unit Z will wait 90 seconds and shut down automatically.
Manual controll is also built into the unit for cases where the operator would like to turn the compressor on regardless of what pressure is present. A safety cutout is built in at 60psi so the compressor will not run in automatic mode above these pressures.
This guards against the operator setting too high a pressure or a malfunction causing lI' the compressor to continue pumping until the possibility of the tyre bursting.
