Description

AUSTRALIA
Patent Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT GREY WATER DOUBLE INTERCEPTOR The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: GREY WATER DOUBLE INTERCEPTOR This invention relates to the interception of grey water and more specifically the interception of laundry, shower and basin waters flowing through the sewer piping system.
While fresh water is quickly becoming a scarce and precious commodity, grey and recycled waters are seen as resources that can be reused in gardens.
Gravity diversion units with overflow to sewer have been used extensively to intercept the grey water flowing through the sewer piping system. Theses gravity diversions and interceptors obstruct the normal path of flow and may carry a single screen or mesh filter unit. Once the filter is clogged no water can be diverted and all water overflows to sewer. The same applies to existing underground interceptors and diversion units most of which are integrated within a sump pump. Present grey water interception and diversion technologies are, or too maintenance intensive, or allow for too coarse a particle to go through preventing them to be used effectively with drip irrigation.
The new invention was developed to provide for easy and low maintenance, and at the same time for fine filtration suited to drip irrigation. The new invention also provides for higher diversion efficiency due the double action of back to back interceptors and the partial self cleaning property of the filters located within the unobstructed flow path. The new double interceptor provides easy access to the filters, and allows for a wider range of installation conditions such as deep underground piping.
The new invention also allows builders to plumb a house as "grey water ready" without having to install a large underground pit.
Currently there exists no system, which combines at the same time the following advantages: Interception of domestic grey water: Using two back to back interceptor units that come as one unit to be installed directly within the sewer piping With no obstruction to the flow path With partial self cleaning properties With a primary and a backup sponge filter With easy access to the filters With off center outlets to prevent flow restrictions from the filter stem Where the filter stems can be used as shut off mechanism And easily adjustable to cater for all sewer piping configuration and depth.
The present invention aims to provide all theses advantages.
In order to obtain these results, the invention combines two back to back identical grey water interception units positioned in the path of the main grey water flow with an inlet an overflow to sewer and two outlets Each interceptor has a top access (10)(1 1) to provide for easy maintenance of the primary and backup filters. The filters have holding stems which can be extended via the male thread to provide reaching length with deep underground installations.
The grey water flowing towards the sewer enters the first interceptor and passes through the first sponge filter towards the first outlet The debris carried by water is left behind on the primary sponge filter With time as the primary filter gets covered with debris, more and more grey water overflows to the second interceptor and passes through the backup filter towards the second Outlet Once both filters are clogged, the grey water overflows to sewer Under this condition, the non diverted high flows, allow for a partial self cleaning action by pushing the debris left over the filters towards the sewer overflow This scouring effect is made possible due to the positioning of the filters along the flow path. The filters are easily accessed for regular maintenance by pulling on the stems through the top openings The filter stems and pipe access can be extended upwards to above ground level (12).
In order to stop the diversion and interception of grey water, the rubber base (18) of the filter stems is repositioned to seal the outlets (13)(14).
In all form of the invention the primary and backup filtration could be of a different material than sponge.
In all form of the invention the double interceptor can be supplied with capped outlets (17) or with an interconnecting fittings and flexible hose Both options allow for future connection to a sump (19) or directly into a pump suction manifold.
In all form of the invention the double interceptor can be located above ground.
To assist with understanding the invention, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which show the various installations mode and configuration of the invention: Fig 1. Shows the grey water double interceptor in an underground setting.
Fig 2. Shows the grey water double interceptor unit with capped outlets.
Fig 3. Shows the grey water double interceptor unit with interconnected outlets.
Fig 4. Shows the grey water double interceptor unit at shut off mode in an above ground setting.

Claims (5)

1. A grey water double interception unit comprising two back to back interceptors which can be directly installed into a below ground sewer piping system with no obstruction to the water flow path, which incorporates an overflow to sewer, a primary and a backup filter, two access opening, two separate or interconnected outlets, and two filter stems that can be used as shut off mechanisms.
2. The grey water double interception unit of claim 1 wherein the filters have an automatic back-flush mechanism.
3. The grey water double interception unit of anyone claims 1 to 2 wherein the filter material is other than sponge.
4. The grey water double interception unit of anyone claims 1 to 3 wherein the shut off mode is achieved through two specialized plugs instead of the filter stems.
5. A grey water double interception unit can substantially as herein described with reference to figures 1-5 of the accompanying drawings. Samandar Milani 2 July 2007
