Patents Act 1990 INNOVATION PATENT
SPECIFICATION
SPINNING WALL SECURITY BOLLARD The following statement is a full description of the invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: ~SPINNING WALL SECURITY BOLLARD It is common practice to install security bollards at or near building such as government offices, shopping malls and alike to prevent limit or control vehicular access to the building. An example of this practice is the placement of bollards near the location of automatic teller machines to restrict vehicular access in order to prevent the vehicle being used as an aid in the removal or of the automatic teller machine, the practice know as ram- Oraiding. It is also a common practice for those wishing to compromise the functioning of the bollard to cut them through with the aid of an angle grinder or demolition saw or some similar tool or implement at or near ,i 10 ground level to allow a vehicle to pass over.
A spinning wall bollard in accordance with this invention consists of the an outer hollow portion 1 generally of a cylindrical nature with a top closing portion 3 and a closing lower portion 4 a coaxial inner portion 2 of cylindrical shape with portions 1 2 3 4 joined together rigidly to form a single piece by a process such as electric arc welding. The spinning wall portion 5 is fitted coaxial to portions 1 and 2 prior to completion of the joining of portions 1 2 3 4 and is free to rotate about portion 2 which acts as an axil.
When an attempt is made to cut through the outer portion 1 with the aid of an angle grinder demolition saw or similar implement generally in the transverse direction the blade of the implement is first able to cut through this portion 1 as it is rigidly held in the ground or similar but when the blade contacts the spinning wall portion 5 it encounters little or no resistance as it is not rigidly held and the portion then rotates about the inner portion 2. As no or little resistive force is encountered by the cutting edge of the blade of the implement the fails to cut through the spinning wall port 5 which then serves to protect the inner portion 2 from being cut through and the bollard is able to maintain its usefulness.
Further the spinning wall portion 5 may comprise multiple segments of similar proportion or diameter arranged about a central axis and stacked one upon the other multiple segments arranged nested one inside the other or a combination of the both.
In this invention the spinning wall bollard is preferably made predominately from steel, however other materials such plastic, ceramic, timber, concrete or metal materials may be used or mixtures thereof.
The invention may be better understood with reference to the illustration of the embodiments of the invention which:- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the spinning wall bollard that in this example is made from five pieces four of which are joined together rigidly.
The spinning wall bollard is made of portions 1 2 3 4 and 5. Portions 1 and 2 are of circular cross-section and are arranged coaxially and fixed to portion 3, a flat circular plate to form a single piece. Portion 5 is then arranged coaxially to portions 1 and 2 and is of such proportion as to be a loose fit to portions 1 and 2 and hence is able to be rotated freely about portion 2.
Portion 4 is then fixed to portions I and 2 rigidly thus capturing portion within the outer shell of the bollard.
The spinning wall bollard is fixed to the ground 6 in accordance with widely accepted practice.
When a cutting wheel 7 of an angle grinder or demolition saw or similar implement is brought into contact with the outer portion 1 of the bollard it is able to cut through until it makes contact with the spinning wall portion which then starts to rotate about the central axis of the bollard 8. As the cutting wheel finds no significant opposing force to its contact with the spinning wall it fails to effectively cut through this part of the bollard which then acts to protect the inner portion 2 of the bollard.

Claims (2)

  1. 2. A bollard can as claimed in Claim 1, be used to deny or limit access to buildings and or places or similar.
  2. 3. A bollard can as claimed in Claim 1, be used to prevent or delay Ssignificantly the cutting through of the bollard by use of an angle 10 grinder demolition saw or similar tool or implement. 0-, Robert John SANDERSON 25 Ih January 2007
