Description

FASTENING DEVICE WITH OPENING LEVER The present application is based on, and claims priority from, French Application Number 05 06 551, filed on 28 June 2005, the disclosure of which is herby incorporated by reference herein in its entirety. 5 The invention concerns a fastening apparatus to propel a fastening element under the action of combustion gas from an explosive charge contained in a cartridge mounted on a cartridge holder received in a gun holder and intended to be entered into a combustion chamber situated at the rear of a cannon slidably fitted in the gun holder. After one firing, and to proceed to the next one, it is first necessary to be able to open the 10 device and thus distance the cannon from the cartridge-holder, this by sliding it forward. At times it may happen that the cartridge casing for the intended round of fire remains stuck in the chamber as a result of expansion of the casing, thus making it difficult to move the cannon forward. Sometimes it may also happen that the operator does not notice that he has used all the 15 cartridges in the cartridge holder, with the result that after the most recent fire, be repositions the device, which pushes the cannon back towards the rear, the combustion chamber coming to recover the casing of a cartridge that has already been fired, If this casing is deformed or expanded, it will be difficult for the operator, after having realized his error, to dislodge this casing from the rear chamber of the cannon. 20 The invention in the present application aims to avoid this drawback. In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a fastening apparatus to propel a fastening element under the action of combustion gas from an explosive charge contained in a cartridge mounted on a cartridge holder received in a gun holder and intended to be introduced into a combustion chamber situated at the rear of the cannon slidably fitted in the 25 gun holder, wherein the apparatus includes opening means designed to draw the cannon forward in the gun holder after firing, bringing the cannon away from the cartridge holder, and thus opening the apparatus, said means of drawing the cannon comprising a lever pivotally mounted on the gun holder such that the manual force applied to the lever by an operator of the fastening apparatus is transmitted by said lever to the cannon to drive the cannon forward relative to the gun holder. Thanks to the invention, in one of the situations such as noted above, the operator will be able to open the device without too much effort, 5 At a further advantage, the lever features a driving pin designed to cooperate with a pressure shoulder situated on the cannon ahead of the pin. It is also preferable that the driving lever is mounted in a housing connected to the gun holder. The invention will be better understood with the help of the following description of the 10 preferred form of assembly of the device in the invention, referring to the appended diagram which represents the device in a split view. The device which is now to be described is a sealing machine intended to bring the packing screw 1, of the nail type, into a supporting material. The machine comprises, in a housing 2, a gun holder 3, a cannon 4, slidably fitted in the gun holder 3, at the rear of the cannon, 15 breach 5 with a firing pin 6, at the front of the cannon, a packing screw guide 7, with a loader 8 comprising a number of packing screws 1. Each packing screw is propelled by a piston 9, set in movement within the cannon 4 along the axis 14 of the machine, under the action of the combustion gas from an explosive charge 10 entered beforehand into the combustion chamber 11 situated at the rear of the cannon 4, by covering of this at the 20 moment of its recoil during the positioning of the machine before firing. The device is an indirect firing device. The cartridge casings 12 are mounted on a magazine here consisting of a disc 13. The disc 13 is received and held in axial position in a housing 15 in the form of an inverted W situated in the gun holder 3. 25 In a housing 16, added on to the housing 2 of the device, attached to the gun holder 3 and extending between the loader 8 the handle 17 of the device on which the trigger 18 is mounted, a lever 19 is mounted, this intended to facilitate the opening of the machine after 2 WO 2008/001150 PCT/IB2006/001774 firing. The lever 19 is pivotally mounted around an axel 20 connected to the housing 16 and the gun holder 3, th6 lever 19 able thus to be presented as a lever pivotally mounted on the gun holder. 5 On the cannon 4 there has been situated, in parallel to and below the axis 14 a tongue 21 whose rear section forms with the wall of the cannon 4 a pressure shoulder 22, set in front of the lever 19. The lever 19 comprises a driving pin 23 intended, though cooperation with the shoulder 22, to shift the cannon 4 forwards, to bring it away from the cartridge holder 13 even if a casing from a cartridge 12 was more or less lodged in the combustion chamber I I 10 of the cannon 4. The lever 19 and the pin 23 extend perpendicularly to one another along a pivot hub 24. The end of the lever 19, opposite the hub 24, is fitted in an opening trigger 25 intended, by being pulled down towards the axis 14 of the machine against the action of a recoil spring 15 not shown, to make the free end of the driving pin 23 pivot towards the front of the machine and as such shift the shoulder 22 and thus the cannon 4 forwards. The functioning of these means for opening will now be explained. 20 Having fired, the relative positions of the gun holder 3 and the cannon 4 being that shown, but without packing screw 1 in the packing screw guide 7 and the piston 9 advanced in the cannon, the opening of the device, in other words the sliding towards the front of the cannon 4 being hindered by the lodging of the casing 12 of the cartridge 10 in the combustion chamber 11 of the cannon 4 and the opening trigger 25 largely projecting out of the housing 25 16 with the pin 23 of the lever 19 stopped by the shoulder 22 of the cannon, the operator presses on the trigger 25 to pull down the lever 19 towards the axis 14 of the machine and pivot the lever 23 counterclockwise on its face, which, in cooperating with the shoulder 22 of the cannon, brings about the forward movement of the cannon 4 in other words the opening of the machine. 30 It is sufficient for the cannon to disconnect from the cartridge casing by a few millimeters for facilitate this opening of the machine. 3 It is to be noted that a stop 26 has been provided to limit the range of the lever 19 and prevent it from butting up against the cannon 4 during the course of its return movement. While various embodiments of the present invention have been described above, it should be understood that they have been presented by way of example only, and not by way of 5 limitation. It will be apparent to a person skilled in the relevant art that various changes in form and detail can be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Thus, the present invention should not be limited by any of the above described exemplary embodiments. Throughout this specification and the claims which follow, unless the context requires 10 otherwise, the word "comprise", and variations such as "comprises" and "comprising", will be understood to imply the inclusion of a stated integer or step or group of integers or steps but not the exclusion of any other integer or step or group of integers or steps.
