Description
AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT IMPROVED DEVICE FOR THE PREVENTION OF A THUMB SUCKING HABIT (Anti Thumb sucking device) The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of implementing it known to me: IP Australia 2 1 DEC 2006 Description This invention has been devised to prevent a thumb sucking habit predominately in children. It is designed to be comfortable as it has to worn for long periods of time whilst allowing normal function of the hand.
The device consists of two parts. Part 1 as shown in figures 1- 6 consists of an open ended tube that fits over the thumb and extends down and wraps around both sides of the wrist and back of the hand. This part is made out of a soft flexible material preferably a thermo plastic non toxic material. Towards the top of the thumb tubing section are some raised projections i on the outside surface. These are here to inhibit the placement of the thumb in the mouth as this textured surface comes in contact with the roof of the mouth, tongue and lips. This uncomfortable sensation prevents placement of the thumb in the mouth. The tube also inhibits the act of sucking as a vacuum can not be created in the mouth due to the air passing between the tube and thumb. There are some raised ridges to provide extra strengthening to prevent the thumb being pulled out of the tube.
Holes ii are present in the part that wraps around the wrist and hand. These holes are designed to accept the insertion of the second part of the device.
Part 2 of the device as shown in figures 7-11 consists of a half bracelet piece, made of a harder but still flexible plastic Part 2 has raised oval shaped projections that have slots (iii) to allow the passing of a strap through them. These projections fit through the holes of part 1 of the device to allow the two parts to come together as shown in figure 6 This allows the strap to be threaded through the slots (iii) of part 2 to enable parts 1 and 2 to come together securing it to the wrist. The strap can be anything that will secure the device, preferably one that can't be removed easily by the wearer.
