Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATIONS INNOVATION PATENT FUNERARY URN BOOK The following statement is a full description of this invention, including its subject matter and its distinct novel purpose.
SFunerary Urn Book O The present invention relates to a funerary urn suitable for storing cremation ashes.
Following cremation, a number of options are available for dealing with the resulting cremation ashes. This applies regardless of whether the deceased is a human or an animal such as a pet.
00 00
OO
SOne option is to keep the ashes in a suitable funerary urn. Funerary urns can be quite elaborate in design. Commonly funerary urns are in the form of a ceramic jar although they may be made from a diverse range of materials. Some urns are in the shape of particular objects that may represent an interest of the deceased, such as a sporting interest or hobby. Funerary urns may include space for a photograph or other memorabilia of the deceased.
The present invention provides a novel funerary urn in the form of a book including a means for holding cremation ashes. Typically the book includes a front cover, a back cover, a spine and pages. Typically the means for holding cremation ashes is a recess for holding a vessel containing cremation ashes. The vessel is typically a box or tin with a lid but could be any suitable vessel for holding ashes. The recess may be in the form of a void cut from pages in the book of sufficient depth to accommodate the vessel. Alternatively, the recess may be in the form of a faux book section mounted on or independent of the back cover of the book. In another alternative the book may include a vessel for holding cremation ashes mounted within the book.
For example, the vessel may be the back cover of the book or a vessel mounted on the back cover of the book.
The book typically includes one or more pages for recording information relevant to the deceased. Relevant information could include name, date of birth, date of death, family details, occupations, interests, hobbies, achievements, persons present at the funeral, a memories and reflection page for funeral attendees to fill out and pages for the deceased's life story to be filled out by family members. There is also a section of pages for photographs to commemorate the persons life.
These pages may be filled out by the family or by an artist or calligrapher. Alternatively the book may be produced with personalised published pages. In this version, the published pages may also be published in multiple copies as a separate booklet to be kept as a memento by family or friends.
INDI
The funerary urn of the invention can become a family heirloom that can be passed down from generation to generation.
O The book may be leather bound or finished in another suitable material. The book cover may feature lettering on the front such as gold lettering on the front and/or on the spine. It can also be personalised with one or more details such as the deceased's name and date of birth and date 00 of death.

The present invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying figures which are in no way limiting on the scope of the invention.
SFigure 1 shows a vessel for holding cremation ashes suitable for use in a funerary urn of the invention.
Figure 2 shows a funerary urn of the invention open to show the recess accommodating the vessel of figure 1.
Figure 3 shows the funerary urn of Figure 2 in closed configuration resting on one end.
Figure 4 shows the funerary urn of Figure 3 open displaying an example of the printed pages contained in the funerary urn.
Figure 1 shows a vessel in the form of a tin with a lid which seals closed. The tin is used to contain cremation ashes. The tin is dimensioned to fit in a recess for holding a vessel containing cremation ashes of a funerary urn according to an embodiment of the invention.
A vessel such as that shown in Figure 1 may be provided with the book portion of a funerary urn of the invention. Alternatively, the funerary urn of the invention may be provided without the vessel and the user may provide a vessel of their choice to be inserted into the recess for containing ashes or personal items.
Figure 2 shows a funerary urn of the invention open to show a means for holding cremation ashes. Here, the means for holding cremation ashes is a recess for holding a vessel containing cremation ashes and in this case accommodating the vessel of Figure 1.The funerary urn is in the form of a book having a front and back cover and a spine. The book includes pages for Srecording information relevant to the deceased, as well as a recess for accommodating a vessel containing cremation ashes of the deceased. In Figure 2 the recess is in the form of a void cut 0 into the pages of the book of appropriate dimensions to accommodate the depth of the vessel.
O
Figure 3 shows the funerary urn of Figure 2 in closed configuration resting on one end. It can be O0 seen from Figure 3 that the funerary urn of the invention could be readily stored on a book shelf 00 as in closed configuration it appears to be a typical book.
Figure 4 shows the funerary urn of Figure 3 open displaying the printed pages for recording Sinformation relevant to the deceased. It can be seen from Figure 4 that the funerary urn of the N invention could be readily stored on a table in the way that coffee table books are stored for instance, or in a special location within someone's home.
