Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION Name of Applicant: Ronald Vanderdrift Actual Inventor: Ronald Vanderdrift Address for Service: IP Monopoly Services P.O.Box 321 MOOREBANK NSW 2170 Invention Title: MULTIPLE HOOK BAIT RIG Details of Associated Application NIL The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing the invention known to the inventor:- The present invention relates to a multiple hook bait rig for use by fishermen.
The use of more than one hook upon which fish bait is secured in a tandem, in-line or lateral arrangement of bait rig is known.
For instance, United States Patent No. 6,189,257 discloses an array of clustered fish hooks. Each hook of the array is mounted for pivotal movement so as to be able to minimize the chance of entanglement with weeds or underwater rubbish.
United States Patent No. 6,006,468 discloses an artificial fly/lure tandem hook connection which enables the shanks of two tandem arranged hooks to remain substantially in-line while providing a secure attachment of the second hook to the first hook.
United States Patent No. 3,736,691 discloses a hook assembly for sports fishing with a back hook permanently affixed to a rear end of a wire shaft and a slide hook which is slideable along the length of the wire shaft and is selectively locked at a desired position therealong by a lock bead..
United States Patent No. 2,700,242 discloses a gang hook bait harness made up of multiple individual hooks supported on a harness that is assembled on and through a minnow.
3 United States Patent No. 356,661 discloses a gang of interconnected fish hooks which are interconnected by links and joints that enable the hooks to O be quickly attached thereto and detached therefrom when required, whilst Cc providing free lateral play to each hook.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome, or at least substantially ameliorate, the shortcomings and disadvantages of the aforementioned prior art, or to at least provide a useful alternative, by providing a multiple hook bait rig that will enable fishermen to catch more fish.
According to the invention, there is provided a multiple hook bait rig, comprising: a wire leader attached to an end of a fishing line, swivel means for allowing the wire leader to swivel with respect to the fishing line, a plurality of hooks connected in spaced apart relationship along the wire leader, each hook having an eye through which the wire leader passes, at least one end hook being connected to a free end of the wire leader, and spacer means slideably engaged with the wire leader and separating respective spaced apart pairs of hooks.
Preferably, the spacer means comprises rubber tubing. Alternatively, the spacer means comprises beads.
It is preferred that there are four hooks, and that they are all of a different size to each other.
In a preferred form, the swivel means is used to attach the end of the fishing line.
The wire leader may be crimped at its free end for connection to the end hook, and may be crimped at its other end for connection to the swivel means.
In order that the invention may be readily understood and put into practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing (Figure 1) which shows a side view of a multiple hook bait rig according to a preferred embodiment of the invention.
The multiple hook bait rig 10 has a wire leader 12 attached to an end of a fishing line 14 and four barbed hooks 16,18,20,22 connected in spaced apart relationship along the wire leader 12. Each hook has an eye 24 through which the wire leader 12 passes. There is an end hook 22 connected to a closed loop or crimped structure 26 formed at a free end of the wire leader 12.
The wire leader 12 is able to swivel with respect to the fishing line 14 via swivel means 28, thereby preventing twisting of the fishing line.
Spacer means, in the form of rubber tubing 30, are slideably engaged with the wire leader 12 and separate respective spaced apart pairs of hooks It will be apparent to persons skilled in this art that various modifications may be made in details of design and construction of the above described multiple hook bait rig without departing from the scope or ambit of the invention.
For example, the hooks may vary in number, and have different shapes and sizes to suit the catching of various types of fish and the mounting of various types of bait, each being able to slide along the wire leader between the spacer means.
The wire leader may be substituted with a mono trace, and the rubber tubing (used above as the spacer means) may be replaced by luminescent tubing or beads that can be slideably supported along, say, the wire leader.
