AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT TRANSFORMABLE BED DESK The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: Page 1 of 13 COMS ID No: SBMI-01208886 Received by IP Australia: Time 11:10 Date 2005-04-18 18/04/2005 11:02 SIMPSON KOTZMFN 4 0262837999 N0.980 D003 STRANSFOMABLE BED DESK This invention relates to a type of transformable furniture which can be interchanged between a double, queen or king size bed with both sides of the bed distanced from adjacent walls, and a desk setup with two shelf units on each side of the desk.
00 Densely populated inner city living, small apartments and share accommodation are all factors that necessitate the need to maximise usage of a space and increase storage potential and functionality of furniture.
N0 Space utilisation of small rooms can be improved by the present invention, which can transform from a double bed to a study desk within a foot print of approximately 2 metres x 2metres.
t This invention can allow a small room (approximately 3 metres by 2.5 metres) to convert from o a bedroom set up complete with a double, queen or king size bed accessible from both sides, to o study room complete with an approximately 1400mm x 700mm desk and two small shelving units on each side in less then 1 minute. Refer to Figure 8.
A feature of the enclosed design is that objects placed on top of the desk do not have to be removed when converting back to the bedroom mode- The invention described in this document comprises of a double, queen size or king size bed frame mounted on central legs which are curved or shaped in a way to keep the centre of gravity of bed frame elevated off the floor at roughly the same height throughout the transformation process (refer to figure The point of contact between the floor and curved legs is roughly aligned with the centre of gravity of the bed frame and mattress- Two shelving units mounted on wheels serve as supports to one side of the bed frame whilst the frame is in its horizontal position. Foldable legs support the other side to stop it from rolling over on the curved legs.
These three points of support (shelves, curved legs and foldable legs) provide stability to the bed whilst in its horizontal position (refer to figure 1).
Upon folding upward the foldable legs, the bed frame can now roll on the curved legs to a vertical position enclosing the mattress between the bottom slats or base of the bed and the wall towards which it rolled. Figure 1 illustrates this rolling motion. Ideally the bed frame will balance almost evenly on the curved legs during all stages of the 90 degree roll to minimrise the effort required for this action.
During transformation a desktop which is positioned beneath the bed is be pulled upwards via pivoting links attached to the bed frame to an ergonomically comfortable height of approximately 720mm. Refer to figure 1. During this action the desktop remains horizontal so that any objects placed above it won't slide off. One way of achieving this is to attach curved guides (refer to figure 1 and 5) to the shelving units on either side of the desktop to limit its swing during the transformation process. The ensemble is designed so that the motion of the bed frame rolling 90 degrees relative to the shelf units and the shape and positioning of the curved guides keep the desktop horizontal.
Hinges are used to secure the shelf units to the underside of the bed frame to allow for relative angular rotation between the two components i.e. the bed frame rotates 90 degrees whilst the shelf units remain horizontal during conversion (refer to figure These hinges also allow the bed frame to pull the shelving units along with it as it rolls towards the wall.
Page 2 of 13 COMS ID No: SBMI-01208886 Received by IP Australia: Time 11:10 Date 2005-04-18 18/04/2085 11:02 SIMPSON KOTZMAN 4 0262837999 N0.980 9004 The shelves of both shelving units can be adjustable in height and removable. This gives access lt to the bottom shelf of the shelving unit positioned against the wall.
0 o Other alternatives can be used in lieu of the shelving units i.e. storage boxes or drawers, provided that they be mounted on wheels at one end and have hinges or links on the other to attach them to the bed frame. Much like with the shelf units, curved guides could then be attached to the boxes/drawers on each side of the desktop to keep it horizontal during the transformation.
The curved legs supporting the bed frame during the conversion process can be mounted on rails or tracks on which to roll. The tracks can serve to both guide the rolling motion and protect the floor.
NO The space below the bed frame and between the central or curved legs can be used as a blanket o and pillows compartment. The foldable legs can double as a door to the blanket/pillows c\ compartment (refer to figure 1, 3 and 4).
o Sliding wheels can be attached to the topmost corners of the bed frame to prevent it from o scratching the wall towards which it rolls.
In the drawings: Figure 1 Step 1 shows how blankets and pillows from above the bed can be placed in a compartment below the bed frame and between the curved legs.
Figure 1 Step 2 illustrates the folding up of the bed legs to enable the bed to roll over. Once folded up, the bed legs can double as a door for the blanket/pillow compartment.
Figure 1 step 3 illustrates the dynamics involved in rolling over the bed towards a wall whilst raising the desktop in a single action. Note how the desktop remains in a horizontal position.
Strategically curved guides attached to shelf units on either side of the desktop keep the desktop from swinging freely backward or forward thus keeping it horizontal. Optionally, weights can be added to the side of the bed opposite to the table top so as to counterbalance the weight of the desktop and:minimise effort required to perform the transformation.
Figure 1 Step 4 depicts the bed in the vertical position against the wall with the desktop in front and the shelving units on either side- Figure 2 is an exploded view of the main components.
Figure 3 is a three dimensional illustration of Figure 1 Step 1.
Figure 4 is a three dimensional illustration of Figure 1 Step 2.
Figure 5 is a three dimensional illustration of Figure 1 Step 3.
Figure 6 is a three dimensional illustration of Figure 1 Step 4.
Figure 7 shows how the end components to the bed frame can be raised or lowered during assembly. When in desk mode, this feature is needed to regulate the space between the bed frame and the wall to cater for different mattress thicknesses.
Figure.8 depicts how much space is created when the conversion from bed mode to desk mode.
takes place.

Claims (11)

1. A transformable furniture module which comprises of a double, queen or king size bed frame 00 mounted on central legs which are curved or shaped in a way to allow the bed frame to roll degrees or there about on one side towards an adjacent wall thus enclosing the mattress between the bed frame and the wall towards which it.rolled.
2. The central legs are shaped and sized to keep the centre of gravity of the bed frame of claim 1 0 and mattress at roughly the same height of the floor throughout the conversion process so as to IN minimise effort required during the transformation-
3. A desktop which is positioned beneath the bed frame of claim 1 is raised via a pulling action exerted from pivoting links attached to the bed frame during the conversion process. 0 o
4. Shelving units, drawers or storage boxes are connected to the bed frame of claim 1 in such a way as to allow for angular rotation between the two components.
The shelving units, drawers or storage boxes of claim 4 are mounted on wheels to enable them to be dragged by the bed frame of claim 1 as it rolls against the wall-
6. The shelving units, drawers or storage boxes of claim 4 serve to support one side of the bed frame of claim 1 whilst in its horizontal position.
7. Tracks or guides can be incorporated into the shelving units, drawers or storage boxes of claim 4 in order to limit the swing of the desktop of claim 3 during the conversion process, thus keeping it horizontal at all times.
8. A blanket compartment can be incorporated in the structure of the bed frame of claim 1 between the .entral legs.
9. Foldable legs can be used to provide support to one side of the bed frame of claim 1 whilst in its horizontal position to prevent it from rolling over.
The foldable legs of claim 9 can double as a door to the blanket compartment of claim 8.
11. A transformable bed/desk furniture module substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings. Marco Albertella 17 April 2005 Page 4 of 13 COMS ID No: SBMI-01208886 Received by IP Australia: Time 11:10 Date 2005-04-18
