Description

Regulation 3.2 Revised 2/98
AUSTRALIA
Patents Act, 1990 COMPLETE INNOVATION SPECIFICATION NAME OF APPLICANT ACTUAL INVENTOR ADDRESS FOR SERVICE INVENTION TITLE: DETAILS OF ASSOCIATED APPLICATION NO(S) Autumn Solar Installations Pty Limited (ACN 050 061 151) Stephen L Merrett Peter Maxwell and Associates Level 6 Pitt Street SYDNEY NSW 2000 SURFACE MOUNTED POOL LIGHT Nil The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to us:m:\docs\20051065\088774.doc O The present invention relates to a surface mounted pool light.
Z In ground swimming pools are commonly fitted with underwater pool lights for illuminating the water when required. These lights are of the conventional halogen globe or filament lamp type and, because of their large size, they are located within recesses formed in the wall of the swimming pool
O
so that they do not present an obstacle or risk of collision with a swimmer.
However, the requirement to create recesses in the pool wall within which N these lights can be fitted adds to the cost and complexity of constructing and maintaining the swimming pool.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a pool light that can be mounted to a wall surface of the pool without presenting a significant obstacle or risk of collision with a swimmer, and which can be easily accessed for maintenance and repair.
According to the present invention there is provided a surface mounted pool light comprising a plurality of light emitting diodes operatively connected to circuit board means controlled by power supply means, the light emitting diodes and the circuit board means being located within a sealed housing that includes a lens for enabling light from the light emitting diodes to illuminate water surrounding the housing, the housing being substantially dish shaped.
Preferably, the circuit board means includes a substantially disc shaped first board for supporting the light emitting diodes above a second board for supporting regulating components for the light emitting diodes.
It is preferred that the light emitting diodes are adapted to change colour.
In a preferred form, the combined thickness of the light emitting diodes and the circuit board means is between about 14mm and about 18mm.
Preferably, the combined thickness is 16.1mm.
24/11/05 3 0 It is preferred that the diameter of the first board is 133mm. The z thickness of the sealed housing is preferably about In order that the invention may be readily understood and put into I practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings in which:- Fig 1 is a perspective view of a preferred pool light of the present 0invention, Fig 2 is a schematic side view of the light emitting diodes and circuit board means of the pool light shown in Fig 1, Fig 3 is a perspective view of a preferred pool light of the present invention disassembled from a mounting assembly which is secured to a concrete pool wall surface, Fig 4 is a side view of the surface mounted pool light of Fig 3 when assembled onto the mounting assembly, Fig 5 is a rear view of the assembled pool light of Fig 4, and Fig 6 is a perspective view of the pool light shown in Fig 4 disassembled from a mounting assembly which is secured to a fibreglass pool wall surface.
The pool light 10 shown in Fig 1 has circuit board means (see especially Fig 2) that includes a substantially disc shaped first circuit board 12 that supports a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) 14. In this embodiment, there are 180 LEDs. Located below, and spaced from, the first circuit board 12 is a second circuit board 16 of the circuit board means that supports regulating components, such as resisters, capacitors, and transistors, for the LEDs. In this embodiment, the spacing between the first and second circuit boards is about 7mm, the combined thickness of the LEDs and circuit board means is 16.1mm, and the diameter of the first circuit board 12 is 133mm. Control of the 24/11/05 4 operation of the LEDs is provided by power supply means in the form of an electrical power cable.
The LEDs 14 and both the first and second circuit boards 12, 16 are I located within a sealed, substantially dish shaped, housing comprising a lens 18, a bezeled surround 20, a base plate 22, and a ring seal 24. The ring seal _24 is sandwiched between the lens 18 and the base plate 22 which define a cavity therebetween in which the LEDs and circuit board means are located.
SThe bezeled surround 20 clampingly secures the lens 18, ring seal 24, and base plate 22 together with screws that are tightened through overlapping holes in the outer rim of the base plate 22 and in the bezeled surround 20. In this embodiment, the sealed housing has a thickness of The lens 18 refracts light generated by the LEDS into the pool water surrounding the housing. The LEDs emit various colours, such as red, green, and blue, and are adapted to change colour by operation of control means connected to the power supply means.
The pool light 30 shown in Fig 3 is disassembled from a mounting assembly 32 which is secured to pebble surface 33 of a concrete pool wall 34.
There is an electrical power cable 36 to the LEDs, the cable 36 passing through a conduit 38 in the wall to an electrical power supply socket. The mounting assembly 32 includes a securing ring 40 which is suited to the pebble surface 33, and a mounting bracket 42 which mounts the pool light 30 to the securing ring When the pool light 30 is mounted on the surface of the pool wall, as shown in Fig 4, the lens 18 protrudes from the bezeled surround 20 such that the maximum distance of the lens from the pool wall surface 33 is As shown in Fig 5, several turns of the electrical power cable 36 should be stored within the housing and behind the base plate 22 to allow for slack in 24/11/05 o the cable when the pool light is separated from the wall surface during Z servicing. Screws 48 are shown tightened through overlapping holes in the outer rim of the base plate 22 and in the bezeled surround 20 so as to Sclampingly secure the lens 18, ring seal 24, and base plate 22 to the bezeled surround Fig 6 is similar to Fig 4 but instead shows a pool light mounting assembly which is secured to a fibreglass pool wall surface 50. The electrical Npower cable 36 passes through a gland body 52 of a gland adaptor 54 which is screwed to the wall surface. Silicone sealant is used to seal the gland adaptor, mounting bracket and screws to the wall surface.
Various modifications may be made in details of design and construction without departing from the scope and ambit of the invention.
