Description

Australia Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT A TOOL FOR USE WITH SPRING CLIPS The following is a full description of this invention and its application.
A TOOL FOR USE WITH SPRING CLIPS It is common to use a load equalising system as part of the towing arrangement for caravans. One frequently used system embodies two long steel rods that are attached between the towing vehicle and the caravan in such a manner that part of the downward load on the towball is shifted to the front wheels of the towing vehicle. One end of each rod is inserted through a hole in the towball carrier and is retained by a spring clip that fits into a machined groove near the end of the rod. Fitting these clips (and removing them) is normally done by hand, and because the spring is quite strong it is a difficult operation.
The invention described here is a tool that overcomes this problem.
The tool consists of two strong handles attached to the ends of two metal blades that are hinged at the rear as shown in figures 1 and 2.
The tool is inserted into the rear of the spring clip as shown in figure 3, and by the action of closing the handles the blades force the clip open ready for it to be inserted into the groove in a steel rod. Removing a clip is carried out in the same manner.
An important feature of the tool is that the hinged blades fit neatly between the rear of the spring clip and the throat as shown in figure 3. This allows the optimum mechanical advantage to be applied by means of the handles.

Claims (2)

1. A tool for use with spring clips that consists of two handles attached to a pair of metal blades hinged at the rear.
2. A tool for use with spring clips as claimed in claim 1 that minimises the effort required to open a clip through designing it to fit neatly between the rear end and the throat of the clip. IAN MURRAY NAPIER 22 FEBRUARY 2005
