Description

7-,
AUSTRALIA
PATENTS ACT 1990 DIVISIONAL APPLICATION NAME OF APPLICANT: Contour Optik Inc.
ADDRESS FOR SERVICE: DAVIES COLLISON CAVE Patent Attorneys 1 Nicholson Street Melbourne, 3000.
INVENTION TITLE: "Auxiliary lenses for eyeglasses" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us: P:\OPERUgcp54025-01 divisioaldo-09/] 1/04 -1- 0 AUXILIARY LENSES FOR EYEGLASSES This is a divisional of Australian patent application No. 54025/01, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.
The present invention relates to auxiliary lenses for eyeglasses.
US Patent No. 5,568,207 to Chao comprise a primary spectacle frame having two magnet members provided on the upper side portions, and an auxiliary spectacle frame including a pair of arms for engaging over the upper side portions for preventing the auxiliary spectacle frame from moving downward relative to the primary spectacle frame and having two magnet members for engaging with the magnet members of the primary spectacle frame. Two hands are required for attaching the auxiliary spectacle frame to the primary frame.
The invention seeks to provide auxiliary lenses which may be easily engaged on the primary spectacle frames by only one hand.
9.15 According to the invention, there is provided an eyeglass device comprising first and second spectacles each having a bridge portion, wherein the second spectacles are releasably securable to the first spectacles by engagement with the bridge portion of the first spectacles which provides underlying support for the second spectacles via the bridge portion thereof, and the two spectacles are releasably securable one relative to the other via magnetic coupling means.
Further according to the invention, there is provided an eyeglass device comprising a primary frame including a bridge and an auxiliary frame including a bridge, the auxiliary frame being releasably securable to the primary frame such that an upper surface of the bridge of the primary frame provides underlying support for the auxiliary frame via the bridge of the auxiliary frame, and magnetic coupling means providing a magnetic coupling between the upper surface of the bridge of the primary frame and the auxiliary frame so as to allow the auxiliary frame to be secured to the primary frame with only one hand by a user.
Still further according to the invention, there is provided an eyeglass device comprising a primary frame including a bridge and an auxiliary frame including a bridge, the auxiliary frame being releasably securable to the primary frame, the bridge of the P:\OPERUgc\54025-0l divisional.do-0911/04 -2z primary frame further including a first connector, wherein the bridge of the auxiliary frame extends above the bridge of the primary frame which thereby provides underlying support for the auxiliary frame and magnetically engages the connector of the primary frame so as to allow the auxiliary frame to be secured to the primary frame with only one hand by a user.
~Still further according to the invention, there is provided an eyeglass device comprising first and second frames releasably secured one relative to the other by magnetic coupling means acting between adjacent bridge portions of the two frames to permit the frames to be engaged by only one hand of a user.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a top plan view illustrating a spectacle frame and auxiliary lenses which are separated from each other; FIG. 2 is a top plan view of the spectacle frame and the auxiliary lenses combination; FIG. 3 is a front elevational view of the spectacle frame and the auxiliary lenses combination; FIG. 4 is a cross sectional view taken along middle bridge portions of FIG. 2; FIGS. 5, 6, 7, 8 are cross sectional views similar to FIG. 4, showing four applications of the middle bridge portions of the eyeglass device; and P \OPER\JsgW4025-01 divisionat doc09/1 1/04 -3- 0 Z FIG. 9 is a top plan view showing another application of the eyeglass device.
Referring to the drawings, and initially to FIGS. 1 to l t 3, an eyeglass device comprises a primary spectacle frame
\O
O 5 for supporting primary lenses therein. The primary C spectacle frame 10 includes two side portions each having an extension 11 extended rearwardly therefrom for pivotally coupling a leg 12 thereto. The primary spectacle frame includes a middle bridge portion 13 for supporting a magnetic or magnetizable connector member 14 therein. As shown the member 14 is operatively exposed to the upper surface of bridge portion 13. An auxiliary spectacle frame is provided for supporting the auxiliary lenses therein and includes a middle bridge portion 21 having a projection 22 extended rearward therefrom for extending over and for engaging with the middle bridge portion 13 of the primary spectacle frame 10 (FIGS. 2-4) The auxiliary spectacle frame 20 also includes a magnetic or magnetizable connector member 24 secured in the projection 22 thereof for engaging with the connector member 14 of the primary spectacle frame such that the auxiliary spectacle frame 20 can be stably supported on the primary spectacle frame 10, best shown in FIGS. 2-4. As shown the member 24 is operatively exposed to a lower surface of the projection 22.
It is to be noted that the projection 22 is engaged with and is supported on the middle bridge portion of the primary spectacle frame 10 such that the P:\OPERUgc\54025-01 divisional doc-09/1 1/04 .4-
O
Z auxiliary spectacle frame 20 will not move downward relative to the primary spectacle frame and will not be n easily disengaged from the primary spectacle frame when
\O
S 5 its user conducts jogging or jumping exercises.
a It is further to be noted that the user is only required to engage the connector member 24 of the auxiliary spectacle frame 10 with the connector member 14 of the primary spectacle frame, such that the frames 20 can be easily secured with each other. The user can thus easily use only one hand to stably attach the auxiliary spectacle frame to the primary spectacle frame. Alternatively, only one of the connector members 14, 24 is required to be a magnet. For example, if only connector member 24 is provided as a magnet in the middle bridge member 21 of the auxiliary spectacle frame, the connector member 14 is not required to be a magnet, but could be composed typically of magnetic iron. It is only required to have the middle bridge member 13 made by magnetically attractive material such that the middle bridge member 21 of the auxiliary spectacle frame 20 may also be easily attached to the primary spectacle frame 10. Only one or one pair of magnetizable members are required to be a magnet for attaching the spectacle frames together.
Referring next to FIG. 4, it is preferable that the connector member 24 is slightly extended downward toward the connector member 14 such that the auxiliary P\OPER\gc\54025-01 divtsionaldoc.09/ 1104 0 spectacle frame 20 may further be stably supported and secured to the primary spectacle frame As shown in FIGS. 5-8, the middle bridge members 13, 21 may be tilted (FIG. The middle bridge member C 21 may include a flange 220 tilted downward (FIG. 6) for engaging with the middle bridge member 13 and for g preventing the middle bridge member 21 from being 1 disengaged from the middle bridge member 13. The magnetic member 24 may be extended downward from the middle bridge member 21 for engaging with a hole 131 of the middle bridge member 13 (FIG. The middle bridge member 21 may include a C-shape having two magnetic 1 members 24 engaged above and below the magnetic member 14 (FIG. As shown in FIG. 9, the middle bridge member 21 may include one or more hand grips 28 for facilitating the holding of the auxiliary spectacle frame, and may include a stop 29 extended downward from the middle bridge member 21 for engaging with the middle bridge member 13 and for preventing the middle bridge member 21 from being disengaged from the middle bridge member 13.
Accordingly, the eyeglass device includes an auxiliary spectacle frame that may be easily secured to the primary spectacle frame with only one hand.
