Description

S&F Ref: 694763 AUSTRALIA PATENTS ACT 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT Name and Address Gainsborough Hardware Industries Limited, of Applicant: an Australian company, ACN 004 792 269, of 190 Whitehorse Road, Blackburn, Victoria, 3130, Australia Actual Inventor(s): Harry Lambrou Address for Service: Spruson & Ferguson St Martins Tower Level 35 31 Market Street Sydney NSW 2000 (CCN 3710000177) Invention Title: A door furniture mounting apparatus ASSOCIATED PROVISIONAL APPLICATION DETAILS [33] Country [31] Applic. No(s) [32] Application Date AU 2003905997 30 Oct 2003 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- A DOOR FURNITURE MOUNTING APPARATUS Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a door furniture mounting apparatus. The invention has been developed primarily for the mounting of handles, latches and locks 5 to doors, and will be described with reference to that application. Background of the Invention Door furniture, such as pull or latch/lock handles, are mounted to the front and/or rear surfaces of doors in order to permit the door to be opened and closed as desired. A pull handle or knob is only fastened to one side of the door. However, some 10 installations require a handle on both sides of the door, which are fastened together through the door. A disadvantage of known door furniture mounting fixtures is that different mounting components need to be utilised for single sided mounting in contrast 'With double sided mounting. This requires specialised parts to be obtained and stocked, is which is inconvenient, and increases inventory cost. Another disadvantage of known door furniture mounting fixtures is that installation is complicated due to the large number different components and the inter engagement of those components. Such fixtures are often not suitable for "do it yourself' installation. 20 A further disadvantage of known door furniture mounting fixtures is that the individual components mounted to the door, such as the lock mechanism and pull or lever handles, are aesthetically separate. This detracts from the overall appearance of the installation. In addition, known door furniture mounting fixtures often result in exposed screw heads, and fasteners, which are unsightly. 25 Object of the Invention It is an object of the present invention to substantially overcome or at least ameliorate one or more of the disadvantages of the prior art, or at least to provide a useful alternative to existing door furniture mounting arrangements. Summary of the Invention 30 The invention provides a door furniture mounting apparatus for mounting to a door having first and second opposed surfaces, the apparatus comprising: 1 a handle having at least one rosette, the rosette(s) having a substantially central threaded hole, an offset threaded hole and an offset plain hole, wherein, to secure one of the rosette(s) to the door first surface, a threaded fastener is inserted from the door second surface, into engagement with the central 5 threaded hole, and wherein, to secure two of the rosettes on the opposed surfaces of the door, each of the rosettes is arranged with the offset plain hole of one of the rosettes coaxial with the offset threaded hole of the other of the rosettes, and a threaded fastener is inserted through each offset plain hole into engagement with each offset threaded hole. 10 The handle preferably has one of the rosettes at each end. The offset holes are preferably diametrically opposed, most preferably on a common pitch circle diameter. A rosette cover is preferably releasably securable to the rosette(s) and adapted to cover the offset holes. The rosette cover preferably has an internally threaded 15 portion engagable with an externally threaded outer portion on the rosette(s). Brief Description of the Drawings A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of an embodiment of a door furniture 20 mounting apparatus according to the present invention, arranged for mounting a pull handle to one side of a door; Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of the door furniture mounting apparatus shown in figure 1, but arranged for mounting pull handles to both sides of a door; and 25 Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of the door furniture mounting apparatus shown in figures 1 and 2, arranged for mounting a pull handle and a lever handle to opposing sides of a door. Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments Figures 1, 2 and 3 show an embodiment of a door furniture mounting 30 apparatus, generally indicated by the reference numeral 10, according to the invention. In each of the drawings, like reference numerals are used to indicate like features. The apparatus 10 includes an elongated pull handle 12. The handle 12 has rosettes 14 located at each of its ends. The rosettes 14 are joined to the handle 12 by 2 stems 15. The rosettess 14 may be formed as a separate component or integrally with the handle 12. Each rosette 14 is generally circular and has a central threaded hole 16 and a pair of offset holes 18a, 18b. Both of the offset holes 18a, 18b are positioned on a 5 common pitch circle diameter around the central threaded hole 16, and are diametrically spaced apart. The offset hole 18a is a plain hole. The offset hole 18b is a threaded hole. The diameter of the offset plain hole 18a is sufficiently large to permit a screw 20, sized to engage with the threaded offset hole 18b, to pass through the plain hole 18a. 10 The apparatus 10 also includes annular rosette covers 22, which are of a similar external diameter as the rosettes 14. The rosette covers 22 have an outer cylindrical wall with an internal thread, which is sized to engage with corresponding externally threaded cylindrical walls 24 on the rosettes 14. The rosette covers 22 also have a central hole 26 sufficiently large to permit the stem 15 of the handle 12 to pass 15 therethrough. Clearance between the edges of central holes 26 in rosette cover 22 and stem 15 is such that the fastening screws 38a and 38b can be inserted into offset plain holes 18a without the need for the rosette covers 22 to be removed back off the stem 15 and over the handle 12. This allows the ends of handle 12 to be of a shape more 20 aesthetically pleasing than just being cut off short, so that the rosette covers 22 can travel over the handle. The installation of the apparatus 10 will now be described. Figure 1 shows the apparatus 10 being used to attach the handle 12 to one side of a door 28, to satisfy a pull/push handle function. In this arrangement, two holes 30 are drilled in the door 28 25 at the same centre spacing as the rosettes 14. Washers 32 are then placed over each of the holes 30, and screws 20 are inserted through the washers 32, and the holes 30. The screws 20 are received by, and engage with the corresponding thread of the central threaded holes 16. Once the screws 20 are suitably fastened, cover caps 34 are attached to the rear of the door 28 to conceal the washers 32 and the screw heads 20. 30 The rosette covers 22 at each end of the handle 12 are screwed into position flush with the front surface of the door, to conceal the rosette 14. This can be done before or after the installation steps described above. The caps 34 and rosette covers 22 provide a neat, aesthetically pleasing finish. 3 In a similar arrangement (not shown), the handle 12 is in the form of a door knob (such as those used for kitchen cupboards) with a single rosette 14 and is attached to the door 28 with a single screw 20. Figure 2 shows the apparatus 10 being used to fasten two handles 12 back to 5 back on opposing sides of the door 28. In this arrangement, a pair of holes 36a, 36b are drilled in the door 28 at the same centre spacing as the pairs of holes 18a, 18b. The rosettes 14 of the two handles 12 are then placed at corresponding positions on opposed sides of the door 28. This places the offset plain hole 18a of one of the rosettes 14 in axial alignment with the offset threaded hole 18b of the other rosette 14 and vice versa. 10 For each of the rosettes 14, a screw 38a is then inserted through one of the plain holes 18a, through the door 28, and into engagement with the offset threaded hole 18b. Another screw 38b is then inserted through the other offset plain hole 18a on the reverse side of the door 28, and into engagement with the second offset threaded hole 18b. This secures the two threaded rosettes 14 to each other, and to the door 28. 15 When the screws 38a, 38b have been fastened, the rosette covers 22 are then screwed into position to cover the offset threaded and plain holes 18a, 18b, and screws 38a, 38b. Figure 3 shows the apparatus 10 being used to mount a pull type handle 12 to one side of a door 28, and a lever type handle 40 to the other side of the door 28. In 20 this arrangement, a single sided mounting procedure (as described in relation to Figure 1) is utilised to fasten the top of the pull handle 12 to the door 28, and a double sided arrangement (as described in relation to figure 2) is utilised to secure the lever handle 40 to the other side of the door. In this arrangement, a standard mortice lock 42 or other latch assembly may be associated with the lever handle 40 to permit opening of 25 the door 28. One advantage of the preferred embodiment of the invention is that the common rosette makes it cheaper and easier to produce a kit of door furniture mounting apparatus suitable for numerous installation applications. A further advantage is that during installation, the user only requires two different screw lengths to permit different 30 mounting arrangements, which makes installation easier to understand and carry out. A further advantage of the preferred embodiment is that the lock mechanism and the pull handle have common visual features, which provides an integrated and aesthetically pleasing final product. A further advantage is that the pull handle can be integrated with standard 35 proprietary door furniture, as mounting methods are arranged in a similar manner. 4 Although the invention has been described with reference to specific examples, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the invention may be embodied in many other forms. 5
