S08 CT Batch; 5845c o JEWELRY APPARATUS 00 0 BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 00 1. Field of the Invention 00 The invention pertains to articles of jewelry, more particularly to mounting of gemstones on a piece ofjewely.
2. Description of the Prior Art The prior art is replete with descriptions of apparatus for holding a plurality of gemstones in a way that provides the appearance of larger or more gemstones than are in the array.
One design fastens a plurality of gemstones around and over the edge of the crown of a larger gemstone to give the appearance of one large stone. This is very effective visually but risks damage to the contacting edges of the diamonds.
The present invention provides nearly the same visual effect with smaller stones while protecting the stones by holding their edges with material that is softer than the gemstones.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is one object of the invention to provide a gemstone setting in which a first gemstone in an array of gemstones is held at the girdle by fasteners that each hold the girdles of two gemstones of a plurality of gemstones that surround the first gemstone.
S Other objects and advantages will be apparent to one reading the ensuing description of the invention.
0 0 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS oO In order that the invention will be more fully comprehended, it will now be described, by way of 0 00 example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: O Fig. I is a front view of a gemstone or jewel.

00 DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS 00 Before explaining the invention in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in 0 5 its application to the detail of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the drawings Ci since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. It is also to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed is for the C1 purpose of description only and not of limitation.
In Fig. 1, gemstone 20 includes table 24, crown 26, girdle 28, pavilion 30, culet 32, upper facets 34 above the girdle, and lower facets 36 below the girdle.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, center gemstone 40 and six side gemstones 20 are mounted on platform 44 of apparatus 50. Gemstone 40 is larger than gemstone Referring to Figs. 2-8, girdle 52 of gemstone 40 extends radially outward from axis 54 into radially inward open recesses 56 in bars 58 which extend vertically from platform 44.
Recesses 56 are preferably shaped complimentary to the girdle so that they closely fit the girdle.
Walls 60, 62 are angled to fit portions of the crown and pavilion so that walls 60, 62 on the six bars 58 hold gemstone 40 and prevent removal of stone 40 from the platform and prevent rattling of the stone on the platform.
Bars 58 are preferably molded in one piece with platform 44.
2 0 Preferably recess 56 positions the stone so that the coulet and lower portion of the pavilion extends into opening 68 that extends through platform 44, and the pavilion is concentric and in 0 contact with sloped annular wall 66 and is spaced from cylindrical wall 70 of opening 68 in platform 44. This is more easily seen in Fig. 5 where wall 62 of recess 56 is continuous on a O straight line with sloped annular wall 66.
00 In another arrangement in which bar 58 is spaced radially outward from the sloped annular wall o 5 66, wall 62 of the groove is discontinuous with sloped annular wall 66 so that the pavilion of the 00 oo stone contacts walls 62 and is spaced from wall 66.
O Each gemstone 20 is mounted on the platform in the same way as the other gemstones 20. The CI description for brevity refers to one gemstone 20 mounting.
Girdle 28 of gemstone 20 extends radially outward from axis 72 into recesses 76 in two bars 58, 0 and extends radially outward from axis 72 into recesses 78 in two bars Bars 80 are preferably molded in one piece with platform 44.
Recesses 78 walls 82, 84 and the walls of recess 76 are preferably angled parallel to portions of the crown and pavillion so that they closely fit the girdle. Recess 76 and 78 hold the stone and prevent rattling and prevent removal of gemstone 20 from the platform.
Bar 58 including two recesses 76 is spaced 100 radially outward from sloped annular wall 96 of opening 94. Bar 80 is at the edge of sloped annular wall 96. The depths of grooves may be varied so that the gemstone is held by the grooves concentric with opening 94 that extends through platform 44, and is spaced from cylindrical wall 98 of opening 94.
In Fig. 8, girdles 28 and 52 are in the same plane 104. Table 106 of gemstone 40 is higher than 2 0 tables 24 of gemstones 20. Gemstone 40 extends lower in cavity 108 formed by opening 68 and the stone, than gemstones 20 in cavities 110 formed by openings 94 and gemstones O Referring to Fig. 3, looking at the top of apparatus 50 having all the stones mounted, one can see c bars 58 Each stone is held so that it cannot be removed regardless of how many stones, or O which other stone is mounted on the platform.
00 Referring to Fig. 7, one looking at the cluster of mounted gemstones from one side will see the 00 outer gemstone and bars 80 and 58.
00 C Each bar 58 holds a portion of the center stone and portions of two outer stones.
C Preferably the platform and bars containing the stones are made of precious metal. Precious metals include but are not limited to gold and silver.
One bar or any number of bars 58 and 80 may be mounted on the platform by pinning, brazing, screwing or other means known to the art for fastening a bar to a platform.
Fasteners including clips and prongs that can grip more than one gemstone around a vertical axis of the fastener may also be used in this invention to hold the gemstones in the arrangements described.
The tops of the bars or fasteners can be tinted or highly polished so that they reflect light and 1 5 enhance the radiance of the gemstone.
A preferred method for making apparatus 50 includes the steps of: a. Construct a master model of the apparatus less gemstones.
b. Make a rubber mold of the master model.
c. Inject wax into the rubber mold, and extract the hardened wax piece from the rubber mold.
d. Press gemstone 40 into opening 68 until girdle 52 of the stone snaps into recesses 56 on bars 58.
e. Press the six other stones 20 into openings 94 until girdle 28 of the stone snaps into recesses 76 of two bars 58, and into recesses 78 of two bars f, IPut the entire wax and stone piece into a container and add investment material which o hardens.
0 h. Inject metal, allow the metal to harden, and remove the molded piece from the container and 00break away the investment material.
00 ci In another method for making apparatus 50, omit the recesses which could be introduced by the master model, or which could be cut in the wax piece, and, using a wax that is resilient, replace Ni steps d, and e, with step i. "press the gemstones axially into openings 68 and 94 until the stones 1 0 contact the sloped annular wall".
In another method for making apparatus 50, omit the recesses which could be introduced by the master model, or which could be cut in the wax piece, and, using a wax that is resilient, replace steps d, and e with step j. "press the gemstones axially into openings 68 and 94 until the girdle of the stone is at some predetermined height range above the sloped annular wall, and the pavilion is spaced from the opening wall".
Methods for casting a jewelry piece with gems, for example diamonds, sapphires, rubies and various synthetic gems at about 600 degrees centigrade, for making gem decorated articles of jewelry for example rings, brooches, pins, bracelets, and earrings may be found in U. S. Patent No. 4,392,289 patented July 12, 1983.
2 0 In another method for making apparatus 50, the piece is cast in metal without the synthetic gems, and the gems are snapped into recesses 56, 76 and 78 on the cleaned and polished piece.
