PATENTS ACT 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT Name and Address of Applicant: Actual Inventor(s): Address for Service: Invention Title: Doric Products Pty Limited 46-48 Redfem Street Wetherill Park New South Wales 2164 Australia Michael Brian Alchin and Perry Raymond Long Spruson Ferguson St Martins Tower Level 31 Market Street Sydney NSW 2000 (CCN 3710000177) A Lock ASSOCIATED PROVISIONAL APPLICATION DETAILS [33] Country [31] Applic. No(s) AU 2003901613 [32] Application Date 04 Apr 2003 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- 5815c A LOCK Technical Field The present invention relates to locks and more particularly but not exclusively to locks for "French doors".
Background of the Invention Locks associated with French doors have generally included a latch tongue operated by a handle, and a lock cylinder that operates a dead bolt. In the past a user would merely close the door by gripping the handle and thereafter operate the lock cylinder to lock the door.
The above discussed lock arrangement is not satisfactory in respect of "French doors" where there is a seal and the door needs to be pulled back on the seal to make proper contact. In such instances the user needs to use both hands, that is pull on the handle to properly close the door and then operate the lock cylinder.
Object of the Invention It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantage.
Summary of the Invention There is disclosed herein a lock including: a body; a first tongue mounted in the body for movement between an extended door jamb engaging position and a retracted position; a second tongue mounted in the body for movement between an extended door jamb engaging position and a retracted position; a first actuator means operatively associated with the first tongue to cause movement of the first tongue from the extended position to the retracted position upon movement of the first actuator means in a first angular direction upon operation of a handle; a second actuator means, the second actuator means being operatively associated with the second tongue to cause movement thereof to the retracted position thereof upon movement of the first actuator means in said first direction, and movement of the second I:\daylib\Iibtt\03247speci.doc:hxa tongue from the retracted position to the extended position upon movement of the first actuator means in an angular direction opposite said first direction.
Preferably, said first actuator means includes a first gear turned by the handle, and said second actuator means is a second gear meshingly engaged for the first gear, the second gear being operatively associated with the second tongue to cause movement thereof. I Preferably, the second actuator means includes an arm member associated with said second gear and engaged with said second tongue so that angular movement of said second gear said arm member moves the second tongue.
Preferably, the first actuator means includes an arm moved angularly by the handle to move the first tongue.
Preferably, the lock includes a lock cylinder, and a lock member mounted in the body for movement between a first position engaged with the second tongue and retaining the second tongue in the extended position thereof, and a second position permitting movement of the second tongue, the lock member being moved between the positions thereof by operation of the lock cylinder.
In a further preferred form the lock member is a first lock member, and lock includes a second lock member, the second lock member being operatively associated with the first lock member so as to move in unison therewith, the second lock member being movable between a first position engaging the first tongue and retaining the first tongue in the extended position thereof, and a second position permitting movement of the lock tongue.
Brief Description of the Drawings A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a schematic side elevation of a lock for "French doors"; Figures 2 to 6 are further schematic side elevations of the lock of Figure 1 in alternative operative configurations; Figure 7 is a parts exploded isometric view of the lock of Figures 1 to 6; and Figure 8 is a schematic further parts exploded isometric view of the lock of Figure 1.
[:\daylib\Iibtt\03247spcci.doc:bxa Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a lock 10 for French doors. The lock 10 includes a hollow body 11 within which there is slidably mounted a first lock tongue 12 and a second lock tongue 13. The tongues 12 and 13 are mounted for sliding linear movement in the direction of the arrows 14 between an extended door jamb engaging position (as shown in Figure 1) and a retracted position (as shown in Figure 5) enabling opening of a door having the lock 10. The first lock tongue 12 has a ramp surface 15 that would engage the door jamb and/or striker member thereof to cause the tongue 12 to move to a retracted position located within the body 11. This would occur when the door was being closed. The second lock tongue 13 would be a "dead bolt".
Not illustrated but associated with the lock 10 would be one or more handles.
The handle/s would have a square shaft that would pass through a square aperture 16 in an actuator 17. The actuator 17 is mounted for angular movement about an axis about which the handle pivots. The actuator 17 includes gear 18 projecting generally radially relative to the axis of the actuator 17.
The gear 18 is operatively associated with a further actuator 19 having a gear meshingly engaged with the gear 18. Accordingly, angular movement of the actuator 17 in a first angular direction causes angular movement of the actuator 19 in the opposite angular direction about an axis of the actuator 19. The axis of the actuator 19 is again generally perpendicular to the door and generally parallel to the axis of the actuator 17.
The actuator 17 also includes abutment faces 21 and a bar portion 22.
Mounted for co-axial angular movement with respect to the actuator 17 is a further actuator 23 having a hub 24. The hub 24 has central aperture 25 to enable the handle shaft to pass therethrough. The further actuator 23 is also mounted for angular movement and has abutment faces 26 positioned to be engaged by the faces 21.
However, it should be appreciated that there is lost motion between the actuator 17 and the actuator 23 due to the angular arrangement of the faces 21 and 26. The hub 24 has extending from it an arm 27 that engages with a face 28 of the tongue 12. When the handle is rotated in the direction of the arrow 29, one of the faces 21 engages one of the faces 26 and causes movement of the arm 27 in the direction of the arrow 30 and moves the tongue 12 to the retracted position by moving the tongue 12 into the body 11. The actuator 17 and 23 comprise a first actuator means 64.
I:\daylib\libtt\03247spcci.doc:hxa The gear 20 is operatively associated with an arm member 31 having a hub 32 from which there generally radially extends an arm 33. The arm member 31 and gear 19 rotate about a common axis through the centre of the hub 32. The axis of the hub 32 is parallel to the axis about which the handle and gear 18 angularly move.
The gear 20 has a pair of faces 34 and 35 that are positioned to engage faces 36 and 37 of the hub 32. In this respect it should be appreciated that there is lost motion between the gear 20 and the hub 32 due to an angular arrangement of the faces 34, 35, 36 and 37. The actuator 19 and member 31 comprise a second actuator means When the abovementioned handle is moved angularly in the direction of the arrow 29 the arm 33 is caused to move in the opposite angular direction, that is the direction of the arrow 38. Movement of the arm 33 in the direction of the arrow 38 causes movement of the tongue 13 to its retracted position. That is, the tongue 13 is moved inwardly with respect to the body 11. This occurs as the arm 33 is provided with a longitudinal slot 39 that slidably engages a pin 40 on the tongue 13.
Movement of the handle in a direction opposite the direction of the arrow 29 causes the arm 33 to move in a direction opposite the arrow 38. Such an operation will cause the tongue 13 to move from a retracted position to an extended position.
Mounted in the body 11 is a lock cylinder 39. The lock cylinder 39 has a cam that is operable to secure the tongue 14 in the extended position. More particularly there is slidably mounted in the body 11 a locking bar 41. The locking bar 41 has an aperture 42 within which the cam 40 projects, with the aperture 42 providing abutment surfaces 43 and 44 that are engaged by the cam member 40 to cause movement of the bar 41 in the direction of the arrow 45. The bar 42 has a projection 46 that is received within an aperture 47 in the tongue 13. The bar 41 is movable between a locking position (Figure 1) engaged in the recess 47 and a release position (Figure 2) permitting movement of the tongue 13. If so required, the tongue 13 may also be provided with a second aperture 48 that is engaged by the projection 46 to lock the tongue 13 in the retracted position.
Engaged with the bar 41 is a further locking bar 49 that has a projection received within a recess 51 of the tongue 12. The bar 49 reciprocates with the bar 41 and therefore engages within the tongue 12 when the projection 46 engages within the tongue recess 47. Thus the tongues 12 and 13 can be simultaneously secured in their extended positions. When the projection 46 is retracted, the bar 49 is also retracted from engagement with the tongue 12 so as to permit movement thereof.
I:\daylib\libtt\03247speci.doc:hxa Mounted within the body 11 toward the rear thereof is a guide 52 that slidably receives a slid member 53. The slide member 53 would be selectively coupled to one or more remote auxiliary locks. The auxiliary locks are operated in unison with the tongue 13 as the slide member 53 is operated by means of an shape link 54. The link 54 has an elongated slot 55 engaged with the pin 40, and a further elongated slot 56 engaged with the pin 57 of the slide 53. The link 54 is pivotally mounted by means of a pin 58 secured to the body 11. Angular movement of the link 54 causes movement of the slide member 53 to operate the remote locks.
The tongue 12 is urged to the extended position by means of a spring 59.
Similarly, the actuator 17 is urged to the position depicted in Figure 1 by one or more springs 60 acting on a slide member 61 that bears against the portion 22 of the actuator 17.
The housing 11 is closed by a cover 62 and 63.
