Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR AN INNOVATION PATENT Name of Applicant: Actual Inventors: Address for Service: Invention Title: Societe de Prospection et D'Inventions Techniques SPIT Emmanuel VALLON Patrick HERELIER DAVIES COLLISON CAVE, Patent Attorneys, of 1 Nicholson Street, Melbourne, Victoria 3000, Australia "Connector for a compressed-gas canister and a fastening appliance" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to us: Q:\OPER\RSH\JULY 04 DEC 04\12501410-258-INNOVDIV.DOC 14/9/04 P:WPER\RSH\ 125O1I41O-imovdi;doI4/9/O4 -1- The invention relates to a connector for, on the one hand, a male outlet end-piece of a compressed-gas canister intended to supply compressed gas to a fastening apparatus that runs on compressed gas and, on the other hand, a male inlet endpiece of a device for letting compressed gas into the apparatus.
A "fastening apparatus" is to be understood as meaning an apparatus for driving fasteners such as nails.
FR-2 771 796 teaches such a connector. More specifically, with this connector, in operation, the ends of two male endpieces are butted one against the other in a plane where they meet, a sealing sleeve extending on each side of this meeting plane and surrounding the ends of the two male endpieces with, in the sleeve, an internal groove for retaining leakage gas, extending between cylindrical surface portions.
These sealing surface portions may prove insufficient.
Furthermore, the butting-together, via the ends of their end-pieces, of the canister and of the inlet solenoid of the fastening apparatus, may be the cause of a certain amount of wear on the solenoid.
The present invention aims to improve the connector of the prior art.
According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided a connector between a male outlet end-piece of a compressedgas canister and a male inlet end-piece of a device for admitting compressed gas into a fastening apparatus for driving fasteners and which is operated by the compressed gas, the connector accommodating the two male end-pieces and P:OPERSH\1201410-innovdiv.doc-14/0904 -2being sealed to the two end-pieces along cylindrical sealing surface portions, the connector also providing sealing surface portions extending substantially at right angles to the axis of the cylindrical sealing surface portions for cooperation with the respective ends of the end-pieces, the end-pieces being coupled to the connector by being pushed into the connector.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided in combination a fastening apparatus for driving fasteners, the apparatus being operated by compressed gas, a compressed-gas canister for supplying compressed gas to operate the apparatus, and a connector for releasably coupling the compressed-gas canister to the apparatus, the compressed-gas canister having a male outlet end-piece of tubular form which is releasably and sealingly coupled by the connector to a male inlet end-piece of tubular form of an inlet solenoid of the apparatus to lead gas into the apparatus for operation, the connector being in the form of a connector sleeve which is separate from the two endpieces, the interior wall of the sleeve being in sealing engagement with an outer wall of each of the male end-pieces along cylindrical sealing surface portions and the sleeve having within its interior an intermediate projection of annular form which provides opposed transverse sealing surfaces in engagement with the outer ends of the respective end-pieces whereby the projection is interposed between the two end-pieces.
According to yet another aspect of the invention, there is provided in combination a compressed-gas canister and a connector for releasably and sealingly coupling the P:\OPER\RS H\I120I141O-inovdiv.do- 14/109/04 -3compressed-gas canister to a fastening -apparatus which is operated by gas from the canister, the compressed-gas canister having a male outlet end-piece of tubular form associated with an outlet valve of the canister such that the valve is opened by depressing the end-piece against a spring bias, the connector being in the form of a connector sleeve which fits over the outlet end-piece of the gas canister and also over a male inlet end-piece of tubular form of an inlet to the apparatus to lead gas into the apparatus for operation, the interior wall of the sleeve being adapted for sealing engagement with a cylindrical outer wall of each of the male end-pieces and the sleeve having within its interior an intermediate projection of annular form which provides opposed transverse sealing surfaces for engagement with the outer ends of the respective end-pieces whereby the projection is interposed between the two end-pieces, the end-pieces being push mounted within the sleeve.
By virtue of the invention, the male end-pieces are not butted together directly, but via sealing means that may be regarded as radial.
The invention will be better understood with the aid of the following description of the connector, with reference to the appended drawing in which: Figure 1 is an exploded sectional view of a compressedgas canister and of a gas inlet solenoid of a fastening apparatus that runs on compressed gas; P:\OPER\RSH\12OI IO410-hmovdiv.doc-14109104 -4- Figure 2 is a sectional view of the canister and of the solenoid of Figure 1 with their end-pieces inserted into the sealing connector; Figure 3 is a view similar to that of Figure 2, but in the state of transferring gas from the cartridge to the apparatus, and Figure 4 is an overall view of the solenoid mounted on the canister.
With reference to Figure 4, a compressed-gas canister 1 is mounted on the compressed-gas inlet solenoid 2 of an apparatus for driving fasteners, of the nail type, via a sealing connector 3.
The inlet solenoid 2 comprises a male inlet end-piece 4 extending axially along the axis 8 projecting from the bottom 5 of a bowl 6, formed by an annular skirt 7 for accommodating the connector 3. The inlet end-piece 4 is of tubular form and it will be seen that its outer surface is cylindrical. The end 9 of the inlet end-piece 4 of the solenoid is set back from the annular edge 10 of the skirt 7. The compressed-gas canister 1 comprises a cylindrical casing 11 ending in an annular bulge 12 forming a bowl 13 from the centre of which an ejection base 14 projects, this base nonetheless being set back from the annular edge 15 of the bulge 12.
An ejection or outlet end-piece 16 is mounted in the ejection base 14, to slide against the action of a return spring 17. The end-piece 16 comprises an external tubular part 18 projecting from the ejection base 14 and extended by an internal solid part 19 acting as a valve. The outer P:\OPER\RS H 12501410-iovdiv.do- 14/109/04 surface of the end-piece 16 is cylindrical as can be seen from the drawings. The valve 19 is mounted to slide in a cylinder 20. The return spring 17 is housed inside the cylinder 20, around the valve part 19 of the ejection endpiece 16, bearing against an annular rim 21 of the valve 19 of a diameter roughly equal to that of the cylinder 20 but nonetheless very slightly smaller so that compressed gas can escape between the cylinder 20 and this rim 21. At rest, the rim 21 of the valve 19 bears against an annular seal 22 housed in an annular shoulder of the cylinder The connector 3, in section, has the shape of an H; the connector 3 thus comprises two female sleeves 31, 32, open in opposite directions, separated by an annular and transverse end partition 33 in the middle of the connector.
The sleeve 31 is intended to accommodate the inlet end-piece 4 of the solenoid 2 of the apparatus, and the sleeve 32 is intended to receive the ejection end-piece 16 of the compressed-gas canister i.
The two interior walls 34, 35 of the two sleeves 31, 32 respectively constitute cylindrical sealing surface portions which, in operation (Figures 2, 3) extend on each side of the ends 9 and 23 of the two end-pieces 4 and 16 respectively.
More specifically, and still in operation, the ends 9 and 23 of the end-pieces 4 and 16 come into abutment against the two annular transverse walls 36, 37 of the radial partition 33 of the connector 3, opposite one another, which therefore run at right angles to the axis 8 of the cylindrical sealing P:OPERASM125014IO n O.div.docI 4/O9/4 -6surface portions 34, 35 and which thus constitute sealing surface portions. In operation, the partition 33 is interposed between the two end-pieces 4, 16.
In a modified embodiment (not shown), the end surfaces of the male end-pieces 4, 16 are fitted with an annular seal which engages the transverse walls 36, 37.
Still in operation, by virtue of conventional means which have not been depicted, and with the inlet male 4 and ejection 16 end-pieces pushed into the double female connecting sleeve 31, 32, the male ejection end-piece 16 is pushed back by the male inlet end-piece 4 against the action of the return spring 17 to disengage the annular valve rim 21 from the seal 22 and allow the compressed gas to escape from the canister 1 into the solenoid 2 of the fastening apparatus.
Throughout this specification and the claims which follow, unless the context requires otherwise, the word "comprise", and variations such as "comprises" and "comprising", will be understood to imply the inclusion of a stated integer or step or group of integers or steps but not the exclusion of any other integer or step or group of integers or steps.
The reference to any prior art in this specification is not, and should not be taken as, an acknowledgment or any form of suggestion that that prior art forms part of the common general knowledge in Australia.
