Description

Description The innovation embodies a means to lift and carry steel sheets of below 8mm.
thickness but could be used on thicker steel if required.
Magnetic devices employing many shallow, high-gradient North-South fields along their length are prior art and are used for manually gripping and dragging single steel sheets. It is known that steel sheet can be removed from such devices by curving the sheet so that it peels away from the magnetic device.
The present innovation provides means for using multiples of such devices on a frame to lift steel sheets and means to exert pressure on the sheet to cause it to peel off at the discretion of the user.
A typical embodiment of the innovation will employ a frame of any suitable material of a size that approximates the standard steel sheet sizes, for example 2400 mm by 1200 mm. To the underside of this frame is affixed numbers of magnetic devices that employ the shallow high-gradient multiple field principle for selecting and retaining a single sheet from a stack or other surface. The number of such devices employed will be calculated to provide adequate safety factor for the weight of sheet to be lifted. The frame will be provided with means for lowering and lifting by crane or fork-lift or other suitable methods.
Further, the frame is provided with means to impart downward pressure on the lifted steel sheet such that it curves and peels away from the faces of the magnetic devices for removal. This means may typically be a series of cams, levers, springs or other devices to exert suitable downward pressure at a point on the sheet so that it is caused to peel from the magnetic devices. Typically these peeling or stripping devices will be operated together by means of linked levers.
Also typically a fail-safe device will prevent operation of the stripping device during lifting.
