SUMMARY OF THE PRIOR ART Frequently lock sets are required for internal doors of a day room or the like of an institution such as a daily remand centre, a psychiatric ward, etc. so that a patient/imnate may retire to the room and have the security of knowing that he or she has locked it.
The present invention recognises tat in such lock sets, such internal door arrangements and elsewhere there can be a need or desire for a capability whereby by either access to a code, a key or the like the door can be opened from the outside irrespective of what is being done with respect to the handle on the interior and the locking feature on the interior of the lock set The present invention is directed to such a lock set and related uses so as to provide the public with at least a useful choice.
STATEMENTS OF INVENTION In a first aspect the present invention consists in a lock set (or at least a subassembly tbereof) having on one side, a locking/unlocking control (or input capability) for a locking mechanism, and, on the other side, a coded, keyed or the like locking/unlocking control (or input capability) of the same locking mechanism, the coded, keyed or the like control or input having a capability of overriding the control or input (for at least locking or unlocking) from the other side.
Preferably the overiding feature results from a clutching adaption in at least one of the controls of the locking mechanism.
Preferably the clutching mechanism is a ball and cage clutch or any other form of clutch which allows rotational slip.
Preferably the locking mechanism is a deadbolt or the like mechanism.
Preferably the locking mechanism is in addition to a door close actuated latch mechanisr.

In yet a fur-ther aspect the present invention consists in a lock (or a subassembly thereof) comprising or including, 00 at least two controllable independent actuation means, and a deadbolt in sliding relationship to said lock, v.0 said deadbolt including an aperture of at least the same length as said throw of 00 said deadbolt, and located within said aperture is a sliding member, sliding orthogonal CA to and in, or parallel to, the plane of said throw, biased to sit flush with the deadbolt o 10 surface from which said aperture is cut from, said sliding member being engageable 0 along its length, aligned to said throw, by at least one of said two controllable independent actuation means at any point of its throw between full retraction and full extraction of said deadbolt sliding path to allow said deadbolt to be full refracted or full extracted.
Preferably there are two such controllable independent actuation means.
Preferably each controllable independent actuation means has a control means associated with it such as, but not limited to, a coded or keyed lock or control member.
Preferably said control means is located either side of sad lock.
Preferably there is a clutching mechanism in series between one of said controllable activation means and its control means.
Preferably each of said independent actuation means engages said sliding member of said deadbolt via a cainming member, one each on said two independent actuation means.
Preferably said camming member is rotationally actuated by said independent actuation means.

This invention may also be said broadly to consist in the parts, elements and features referred to or indicated in the specification of the application, individually or collectively, and any or all combinations of any two or more of said parts, elements or features, and where specific integers are mentioned herein which have known equivalents in the art to which this invention relates, such known equivalents are deemed to be incorporated herein as if individually set forth.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS A preferred form of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows an isometric view in part assembly of a lock set in accordance with the present invention, the diagram showing the dead mortis deadbolt subassembly from one side but without the cover plate thereof, and Figure 2 is an exploded view of the components of the subassembly of figure 1 plus also set out therefrom the clutching mechanisms capable of transferring a rotational force from one side of the door with which it is to be fitted so as to provide an overideable clutch control of the deadbolt, and the keyed independent actuation means.
Figure 3 shows in isometric the relationhip between the deadbolt in fully and partially retracted modes showing how asynebrony can occur, and the standard deadbolt DETAILED DESCRIPTION In reference to Figures 1 to 3 there is shown a preferred form of the present invention, a mortis subassembly 1 with cover 10 is fitted in a cavity in the door (not shown) and is adapted to allow the deadbolt 2 to be received within the housing 3 or to extend therefrom out of the opening 4 of the plate 5 mounted to the door edge. The arrangement as shown shows a deadbolt mechanism only and not one that includes with it a self-closing door handle opening latch although such an additional feature can, if desired, be provided.

The ball and cage clutch may itself be externally rotationally locatable relative to member 8 by a second indexing means (not shown) between the ball and cage clutch 25 and the member 8 (eg a bail on spring with an indent on the case of the ball and cage clutch).- T'he movement of the deadbolt 2 over the same range of conditions searately is to be under action of a similar form of control but preferably one that requires a key or a code to be entered, is capable of similarly controlling the movement of the deadboLt 2 over whatever input may be provided by the control 7 via the clutching mechanism.
In the embodiment shown the second independent actuation means is via a key activating a matching lock body 12.
The sliding member assembly 13 is shown. The assembly consists of a sliding block 16 to which is attached the engagement plate 17, via fastener 18. The assembly is biased via a spring 15 to sit flush with the upper surface 19 of the deadbolt 2. The sliding block '16 is grooved and locates in complimentary grooves in the deadbolt aperture 14.
Deadbolt actuation cam 24 (of a similar style to that of cam 20) is activated by the keyed actuation means 12. Rotation of the key will cause direct rotation of the cam 24 as it is engaged on the lock body 12. The radius of the path of rotation 21 is dictated by length of the body of the cam 24. The cam is sufficiently long to engage the sliding assembly 13 which is depressed as the cam reaches the bottom of rotation.
The engagement of the sliding member by the coin causes the deadbolt to slide in the direction of rotation of the cam. In this instance a clockwise rotation of the cam 24 causes the deadbolt to be slid out of the lock assembly and a counter-clockwise rotation causes retraction.
Separate and independent deadbolt actuation camn 20 (shown in place and exploded out for clarity) is activated by the control member 7 via the clutch mechanism 6. Again engagement of the sliding assembly causes mnovement of the deadbolt in a similar manner, to that described above.

Because there is no clutch mechanism present no asynchrony will occur of the cam(s) and the deadbolt, Thus the cam(s) will always be engaged and synchronous with the deadbolt.
However even in the present invention, because the lock can be activated from both sides of the lock assembly by two independent cams (20 and 24), and the clutch arrangement 6 that is in place between the actuations means 7 and 11, an asynchrony can occur between the two, the camming members 20 and 24 and the deadbolt 2. Thus to allow engagement of the deadbolt at any position, should it for any reason be t0 prevented from fully retracting or extracting, the sliding assembly 13 has an extended engagement plate 17- Compared to the standard size sliding assembly 22 shown in Figure 3C the engagement plate 17 in the present invention is longer.
The engagement plate 17 of the present invention must be at least the length of the throw of the lock so that should the cam be rotated out of an engagement position on 17, they can re-engage the plate at any point again to reactivate the lock.
In this way therefore, for example, if the deadbolt is for a toilet, a person can enter the toilet and can lock the door behind them knowing that they have control of the locking mechanism except for those who have knowledge of any code to override that control from the other side and/or have a key to provide n overriding control form the other side. Any appropriate form of overriding control is within the ambit of the present invention.

Claims (9)

A lock (or a subassembly thereof) comprising or including, ct at least two controllable independent actuation means, and a deadbolt in sliding relationship ("throw") to said lock, o 5 said deadbolt including an aperture of at least the same length as said throw of said deadbolt, and located within said aperture is a sliding member, sliding orthogonal 0 surface from which said aperture is cut from, said sliding member being engageable N along its length, aligned to said throw, by at least one of said two controllable o 10 independent actuation means, to allow engagement of said deadbolt by said at least one CA of said two controllable independent actuation means at any point of its throw between full refraction and full extraction of said deadholt sliding path to allow said deadbolt to be full retracted or frill extracted by either one or both said independent actuation means.
  2. 2. A Jock as claimed in claim I wherein each of said at least two controllable independent actuation means has a control means associated with it such as, but not limited to, a coded or keyed lock or control member.
  3. 3. A lock as claimed in either of claims I or 2 wherein there is a clutching mechanism in series between one of said at least two controllable independent activation means and its associated said control means.
  4. 4. A lock as claimed in any one of claims I to 3 wherein there are two such. controllable independent actuation means.
  5. A lock as claimed in claim 4 wherein said control means is located either side of said lock.
  6. 6. A lock as claimed in either of claims 4 to 5 wherein each of said two controllable independent actuation means engages said sliding member of said deadbolt via a caruming member, one cach on said two controllable independent actuation means.
