Patents Act 1990 ALBION HAT CAP CO. PTY LTD COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT Invention Title: Manufacture of an article of headgear The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to us:- Technical Field This invention relates to an article of headgear. More particularly, the invention relates to a method of manufacture of an article of headgear.
Background Art Previous fabric coverings applied to articles of headgear such as protective helmets have consisted of flexible tabs, intermediate materials such as glues, or applied directly in the form of a paint or co-laminating material. As a result, replacement of such fabric is time consuming and difficult.
Summary of the Invention According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of manufacture of an article of headgear, the method including the steps of: providing a cap portion, the cap portion having a region of rigidity about its rim; covering an external surface of the cap portion with a covering; and urging a brim portion on to the cap portion to sit snugly about the region of rigidity of the cap portion to hold a periphery of the covering captive between the region of rigidity of the cap portion and the brim portion.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided an article of headgear which includes: a cap portion with a region of rigidity about its rim; a brim portion received about the rim of the cap portion; and a covering which covers an external surface of the cap portion, a periphery of the covering being held captive between the region of rigidity of the cap portion and the brim portion.
The article may include a securing means, to secure the brim portion to the cap portion.
The securing means may include an interlocking clip portion and at least one retaining member.
The article may be a helmet, and the cap portion may be in the form of a shell. The brim portion is preferably a rigid constituent. The covering may be flexible and may be fabric or plastics. The covering may be fitted over the external surface of the cap portion.
The interlocking clip portion may be formed between the cap portion and the brim portion. The brim portion may be a visor. The visor may have an asymmetric V-shaped groove and a front part of the rim of the cap portion may terminate in a lip received in the groove. The brim portion may be forced over the covering that is in contact with the external surface of the cap portion. The securing means may retain the brim portion in position relative to the shell.
The retaining member may consist of a retaining screw, at the rear of the article, which passes through the rim of the cap portion and brim portion.
Accordingly, it is an advantage of at least one embodiment of the invention to provide a method of manufacture which facilitates simplified covering of the shell of a helmet with fabric. Another advantage of at least one embodiment of the invention is to provide a simple procedure to remove the visor, replace the covering, and re-attach the visor. The need for adhesives, or the like is thus obviated.
Brief Description of the Drawings An example of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a three dimensional front view of an article of headgear, in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a section through a front of the article of headgear showing a part of a securing means; and Figure 3 is a section through a rear of the article of headgear a flexible part of the securing means.
Best Modes of the Invention Figure 1 shows an article of headgear in the form of a protective helmet 1 with a cap portion in the form of a protective shell 14, a rigid brim portion or visor 16 in contact with a rim or periphery of the protective shell 14, a covering 15 applied over the outer surface of the protective shell 14, and a securing means which includes an interlocking clip portion 2 (shown in Figure 2) and a retaining member 3 (shown in Figure 3).
Referring to Figure 1, the covering 15 that encloses the outer protective shell 14 is composed of three sections; a crown section 17 that covers a dome of the protective shell 14 and two trapezoidal skirt sections 19 that cover the sides of the protective shell 14. The covering 15 is fitted over the outer surface of the protective shell 14. The visor 16 extends outwardly in the forward direction to form a peak 21 which shields the wearer's eyes, and about the periphery of the shell 14. The protective shell 14 and visor 16, are constructed of a thermoplastic or polypropylene material.
Referring to Figure 2, a lip 20 is formed on the periphery of the protective shell 14 at the front region thereof. The visor 16, in the region of the peak 21, defines a V-shaped groove between an upper arm 22 and a lower arm 18. The visor 16 is forced over the outer surface of the protective shell 14 that is in contact with the covering 15. The lower arm 18, which is shorter than the upper arm 22 slides underneath the lip 20. An abutment 24 on the lip 20 engages a stop 26 on the upper arm 22 inhibiting further movement.
The lip 20 is held between the upper arm 22 and lower arm 18. The covering 15 is thus firmly gripped between the upper arm 22 and the protective shell 14.
The retaining member 3 includes a retaining screw 28 (shown in Figure 3) which passes through an opening 32 in a rear part 30 of the rim of the protective shell 14 and is received in a threaded socket 34 in the visor 16.
The helmet 1 includes a protective element or faceguard 12 (shown in Figure 1) depending from the protective shell 14. The protective helmet 1 can also include an adjustment mechanism 10 attached to the shell 14 for adjustment of the faceguard 12.
In use, the covering 15 is placed over the shell 14 so that the periphery of the covering 15 is in the desired position relative to the shell 14. The visor 16 is placed over the shell 14 and the covering 15 is urged towards the rim of the shell 14. The visor 16 is a snug fit about the rim of the shell 14 and holds the periphery of the covering 15 captive between the shell 14 and the visor 16. Urging of the visor 16 towards the rim of the shell 14 also serves to make the covering 15 taut about the shell 14 so that it is substantially unwrinkled to provide an attractive appearance.
Once the visor 16 is in position relative to the shell 14, the retaining screw 28 is driven home to retain the visor 16 in position relative to the shell 14.
Accordingly, simplified covering of the shell of a helmet with fabric can be achieved during manufacture of the helmet 1. When it is desired to recover the shell of the helmet, it is a simple procedure to remove the visor 16, replace the covering 15, and re-attach the visor 16. The need for adhesives, or the like is thus obviated.
It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that numerous variations and/or modifications may be made to the invention as shown in the specific embodiments without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as broadly described. The present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive.
