Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT
APPLICANT:
Invention Title: ADVANCED ELECTRONICS PTY LTD ROOFING MOUNT The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: "ROOFING MOUNT" Technical field This invention relates to a roofing mount.
The invention has particular but not exclusive application to a roofing mount for mounting a TV antenna, satellite dish or the like on a roof adjacent the eaves or guttering.
Background of Invention It is known for T/ antennae, satellite dishes and the like to be mounted to roofs by fixing the upright pole on a support which is attached to a pair of adjoining rafters in order to provide rigidity and bracing.
Summary of Invention The present invention aims to provide an alternative to known antenna roofing mounts.
This invention in one aspect resides broadly in a roofing mount for mounting an antenna or the like to a roof having rafters and a fascia affixed thereto, the roofing mount including:a mast for supporting the antenna, and a fastening assembly for fastening to the roof, the fastening assembly including a first member adapted in use to juxtapose the rear of the fascia for fixing thereto and a second member adapted in use to juxtapose a single rafter for fixing thereto.
It is preferred that the first and second members form a T piece with the second member constituting the leg of the T piece.
It is also preferred that the roofing mount includes a mast support member fixed to the fastening assembly at the T junction of the first and second members the mast support member extending in the direction away from the second member.
It is also preferred that the mast support member is adapted to be received within guttering attached to the fascia.
It is also preferred that the first member is substantially the depth of roofing battens mounted on the rafters, and the second member greater than the depth of the first member and approximates the depth of a roofing rafter.
It is also preferred that the second member is inclined upwardly from the first member.
It is also preferred that the first and second members each have a plurality of apertures therethrough for receiving fasteners to fix the members to the fascia and rafter respectively.
It is also preferred that the apertures in the second member are patterned in a grid to constitute a universal connector such that the member can be fixed to the rafter by a plurality of fasteners irrespective of correspondence between the pitch of the rafter and the angle of inclination of the second member.
In another aspect this invention resides broadly in a method of mounting an antenna or the like to a roof having rafters and a fascia affixed thereto, the method including:removing the roofing adjacent a single rafter; providing a mast for supporting the antenna, the mast being mounted on a fastening assembly including a first member adapted in use to juxtapose the rear of the fascia and a second member adapted in use to juxtapose a single rafter; fixing the first member to the rear of the fascia; fixing the second member to the single rafter, and replacing the roofing.
Description of Drawings In order that this invention may be more easily understood and put into practical effect, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, wherein:- FIG 1 is a plan view of a preferred embodiment of the roofing mount in accordance with the invention; FIG 2 is a side view of a preferred embodiment of the roofing mount in accordance with the invention; FIG 3 is a front view of a preferred embodiment of the roofing mount in accordance with the invention, and FIG 4 is a side view of the roofing mount as seen in FIG 2, shown affixed to roofing.
Description of Preferred Embodiment of Invention As can be seen in the illustrations described above, the roofing mount for mounting an antenna or the like 22 to a roof having rafters 17 and a fascia 18 affixed thereto has a mast 11 for supporting the antenna. A fastening assembly for fastening to the roof has a first member in the form of plate 13 adapted in use to juxtapose the rear of the fascia 18 for fixing thereto, and a second member in the form of plate 14 adapted in use to juxtapose a single rafter 17 for fixing thereto. Plates 13 and 14 form a T piece with the second plate member 14 constituting the leg of the T piece.
Mast 11 is seated on a mast support member 12 in the form of a curved plate which is fixed to plates 13 and 14 at their T junction. Curved plate 12 extends in a direction away from plate 14. As can be best seen in FIG 4, the mast support member 12 sits within guttering 19 which is attached to fascia 18 in conventional manner.
Again as best seen in FIG 4 the depth of first member plate 13 is substantially the same as the depth of roofing battens 20 mounted on rafters 17. The depth of the second member plate 14 is greater than that of first plate 13 and closer to that of roofing rafter 17. Fascia 18 is conventionally fixed to the end of rafters 17 with the top extending above the top of the rafters the same distance as the depth of the tiling battens 20 such that the top of the fascia aligns along the pitch of the roof with the top of the battens. Consequently when the assembly is positioned with the mast support 12 seated on the top of fascia 18 (or if to be flush therewith, notched in the fascia), plate 13 extends like a lip over the back face of the fascia 18 and sits adjacent the top of rafter 17.
Plate 14 is inclined upwardly from the first plate member 13 at a slight angle to compensate for the pitch of the roof. A typical inclination is about degrees (as seen in FIG 2).
First and second plate members 13,14 each have a plurality of apertures 15,16 therethrough for receiving fasteners to fix the plate members 13,14 to fascia 18 and rafter 17 respectively. Fasteners 23 (typically screws, bolts, coach screws as appropriate) are shown schematically as an in FIG 4 and fasten plate 14 to rafter 17. Apertures 16 in second plate member 14 are patterned in a grid and hence constitute a universal connector such that plate member 14 can be fixed to rafter 17 by a plurality of fasteners (four fasteners 21 as seen in FIG 4) irrespective of whether there is correspondence between the pitch of rafter 17 and the angle of inclination of the second plate member 14.
In use it will be seen that a satellite dish 22 for example is mounted to a roof having rafters 17 to which is affixed a fascia 18 by removing the roofing 21 adjacent a single rafter 17, and then providing a mast 11 for supporting the dish.
The mast 11 is mounted on a fastening assembly which has a first member 13 which is adapted in use to juxtapose the rear of the fascia 18, and a second member 14 which is adapted in use to juxtapose a single rafter 17. The first member 13 is fixed to the rear of the fascia 18 and the second member 13 is fixed to the single rafter 17. The roofing 21 is then replaced.
The roofing mount in accordance with the present invention will be seen to have a number of advantages over known roof mounts. In particular it is far easier to install with the amount of roofing needing to be removed considerably less because access is required to only one rafter. The present roofing mount also costs less to produce and weighs much less than known mounts typically a reduction in weight by a factor of two thirds is possible.
It will of course be realised that whilst the above has been given by way of an illustrative example of this invention, all such and other modifications and variations hereto, as would be apparent to persons skilled in the art, are deemed to fall within the broad scope and ambit of this invention as is herein set forth.
