Description

COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT BOOK REST WITH PAGE HOLDER The following is a full description of this invention, including the best method of application known to me.
'BOOK BUDDY' BOOK REST WITH PAGE HOLDER Many people who read in bed find that their hands and arms get tired from holding a book in an upright position.
Sitting in a chair reading for extended periods of time, can cause hands and arms to become uncomfortable, especially if suffering an ailment like arthritis.
This invention has been specifically designed to enable a person to read comfortably in any position, sitting or lying down. Without having to hold the book up, or even hold the pages open, this invention alleviates the discomfort associated with holding a book for extended periods of time.
An important feature of this invention, is the ability of the Book Rest to conform to the surface on which it is sitting, whether this be the even surface of a table, or resting on a persons lap.
The pliability of the design allows the book to be adjusted to sit at any angle.
The 'Book Buddy' book rest, in accordance with this invention comprises a bean filled bag with firm inserts forming a shelf like cavity, on which a book can be placed, which is then held in place by the page holder enabling the book to stay in an open position.
The firm inserts that form the shelf on which the book rests, are of such shape, that the book sits on one section of the shelf, in an open position, leaning against the corresponding sections of the cavity inserts.
Whilst the book is in an open position resting on the book rest, the page holder is then pushed up against the open pages and held there by a toggle that is attached by an elasticized cord..
The page holder is comprised of a flat section that slides under the book as it sits on the book rest, whilst its corresponding sections at 90 degree angles, press firmly against the pages to hold them open.
The page holder is positioned by sliding up a length of elasticized cord which is attached to the book rest, so as to sit against the book, holding the pages open whilst a toggle is then slid into place on the said cord, to hold the page holder firmly in place.
The book rest is preferably made of vinyl or fabric, however other materials can also be used. For example P.V.C. which is welded at the seams would also be suitable.
The invention may be better understood with reference to the illustrations of embodiments of the invention I which:- Figure 1. is an elevation of the book rest showing the shelflike cavity on which the book sits.
Figure 2. is a perspective view of the book rest with the page holder in place.
Figure 3. is a perspective view of the page holder holding a book in an open position.
The book rest which is shown In figure 1. Is made of a flexible and pliable material containing foam beads or balls, which enable the flexibility needed to adjust its position and sit comfortably on any surface.
The reader's book then sits on the stiff insert in an open position, leaning on stiff inserts Figure 2. Shows the page holder which is made of stiff plastic or perspex.
Elastic is threaded through hole in said page holder, and attached to the book rest at point Toggle can move along the elasticized cord for easy adjustment.
Page holder edges slide under each side of the book to keep it in place.
Figure 3. Shows a book in an open position, resting on the book rest.
To ensure that the pages don't move, and that the reader can indeed read hands free, the page holder edges slide under the edges of the book to allow parts (BI) and to press firmly up against the pages of the book.
Toggle slides up and tensions the elasticized cord to pull and hold the page holder in position.
Page holder can be slid towards the reader and away from the book, whilst still under some tension from the elasticized cord.

Claims (6)

1. A Book rest for holding a book in an open position, comprising of a bag filled with particle matter, having inserted panels for the book to rest on and against, with a page holder that can be tensioned to hold the pages open, enabling a person to read hands free in a number of alternative sitting or lying positions.
2. A Book rest for holding a book as claimed in claim 1, in which the bag is filled with movable particle matter, such as foam balls or other filling, that enables the said book rest to mould its self to any surface shape.
3. A Book rest for holding a book as claimed in claims 1 2, wherein said book rests on firm panels, made of a rigid material, which is inserted into said bag, creating a firm cavity for the book to rest on and lean against.
4. A Book rest for holding a book as claimed in claims 1 3, wherein the book, whilst sitting in said cavity, is held in position with the pages open, by means of the page holder.
A Book rest for holding a book as claimed in claims 1 and 4, where in the page holder is made of a firm or hardened material, shaped to have flat sections that press against the bottom of the pages of the book, whilst the book is sitting in the cavity of the book rest, as to hold the pages open and the book firmly in place.
6. A Book rest for holding a book as claimed in claims 1 5, where in the said page holder is attached to the book rest with a length of cord or elastic, enabling the page holder to slide along said cord to press firmly against the pages of the book, and be held in place by a fastener which clips onto said cord, such as a toggle, which stops the page holder from sliding back along the cord, enabling the tension to remain on the open pages.
