Description

AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 CHRISTOPHER DOHERTY COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT Invention Title: A means of marking a book The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to us:m:\speci\110000\1 16-117\116635innovreh.doc Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a book having marking members and a method of producing the same.
Background Art Many forms of bookmarks have been used, ranging from simple strips of paper or cardboard to clip on plastic devices. The problem with such bookmarks is that they have a tendency to be dislodged from the book thereby losing the user's place.
Other more extravagant forms of bookmark have been developed including the use of spring bound members that automatically mark a page when a user turns said page. Such devices, however, are expensive to produce and extremely cumbersome to use.
The present invention aims to address the problems of the prior art.
Any discussion of documents, acts, materials, devices, articles or the like which has been included in the present specification is solely for the purpose of providing a context for the present invention. It is not to be taken as an admission that any or all of these matters form part of the prior art base or were common general knowledge in the field relevant to the present invention as it existed before the priority date of each claim of this application.
Summary of the Invention The present invention consists in a book having a front cover, a rear cover, and a series of pages bound therebetween, each page having an inner margin adjacent a binder of the book and an outer border adjacent a free edge of said page, the book comprising at least one flap formed on the outer border of each page of said book, said at least one flap being foldable such as to mark a page of said book.
Preferably, the book includes a number of flaps along the outer margin of each page.
Typically, the flaps are defined by a series of incisions or slits in the outer margin of each page of the book. The slits preferably extend from a first page in the book to a last page in the book.
Each slit in the page extends the same or at least a similar distance into the outer margin, The depth of the slit may be between approximately 2cm and 4cm depending on the width of the outer border of the book.
Each slit is preferably positioned at the same location on each page to form a substantially straight slit when the book is viewed side on.
In a second aspect, the present invention consists in a method of manufacturing the book of the first aspect of the invention said method including the step of providing at least two incisions in the outer margin of each page of the book said at least two incisions defining a flap therebetween, said flap being foldable to mark the page of said book.
Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a book according to the present invention; Figure 2a is a perspective view of a book according to the present invention; and Figure 2b is an exploded view of part of the book of Figure 2a Detailed Description of the Drawings The book of the present invention is generally shown in the accompanying drawings as 10. The book has a front cover 11, a rear cover 12, and a series of pages 13 bound therebetween. Each page 13 has an inner margin 14 adjacent a binder 15 of the book and an outer border 16 adjacent a free edge 17 of page 13. The book has at least one flap 18 formed on the outer border 16 of each page 13.
As shown in Figure 2b the flap 18 is foldable such as to mark a page of the book.
As depicted, the book includes a number of flaps 18 along the outer margin 16 of each page. The flaps 18 are defined by a series of slits 21 in the outer margin 16 of each page of the book 10. The slits 21 extend through the width of the book from a first page in the book to a last page in the book.
Each slit 21 extends the same or at least a similar depth into the outer margin 16 and is positioned at the same location on each page 13 to form a substantially straight slit 21 when the book is viewed side on (as can be seen in Figure 1).
It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that numerous variations and/or modifications may be made to the invention as shown in the specific embodiments without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as broadly described. The present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive.
