Abstract

Irreversible destruction of shredded and/or ground personal documents comprising pretreating in hydrolysis and acidogenesis vessel(s) at pH less than 6 and 30-60 degrees C, transferring the product in small portions into methanization and acetogenesis vessels maintained at pH 7.2-8, for anerobic digestion at 50-60 degrees C to form methane and carbon dioxide, and immediately replacing the product by fresh material from the mixing/grinding plant, is new. <??>Independent claims are also included for the following: <??>(1) continuously operated, two-stage apparatus for the process, comprising hydrolysis and acidogenesis vessels, methanization and acetogenesis vessels, mixing and grinding plants, solid/liquid separation and decantation units and pumps for circulating the liquids in the tubes linking the various units; and <??>(2) the use of an inoculant solution (A) for the hydrolysis/acidogenesis and methanization/acetogenesis of previously shredded and/or ground personal documents, where (A) contains bacteria from a liquor obtained in methane-forming digestion, for at least 30 days at 35 degrees C, of slurry from cows fed a cellulose-rich diet, or anerobic reactors for treating cellulosic waste.
