SPECIFIOATION
STAEdhR PMTENT TOWMAR MOUNTED TRAIL BIKE MOLDER (TinE) The following stattuent Is a full description of this invention, including the best method of Nertofing it known to me: 11-25-92 12:11 EDMONTON POST OFFICE ID-=749554 579 P@3 TOWSA NOUNTD TRAIL BIE HOLDER This invention relates to an alternative option for the transportation of a trail motorcycle by means of a motor vehicle towbar mounted device. This device is suitable for fitting to 50 mm square receiver type towbars or by direct bolting via the two thread tapped holes which normally fasten the towball fitted steel tung plate to the towbar.
The towbar mounted trail bike holder is constructed of mild steel channel iron, rolled hollow section, square bar, flat bar, round bar, and pipe. This device is comprised of seven main components:- The towbar 1 mounted solid square bar arm 2.
The rigid frame section The semi pivotal channel iron 4.
The self height adjustable front wheel clamp The steel bushed scissor jack 6.
The footpeg sockets 7 and turnbuckles The multi adjustable stabilizer brace 8.
The towbar 1 mounted solid 50 mm square bar arm 2 is equipped with multi hole adjustment allowing the square receiver 9 to be located and pinned in the position which best suits, so as to achieve minimal clearance between trail bike and the tailgate of the motor vehicle. The square receiver 9 also incorporates the offset and gusseted square receiver 10 which providen the mounting point for the rho rigid frame section 3. Alternatively the square receiver 10 could be substituted with a cylindrical receiver 11 to accept the rigid frame section 3 spigot 12. This would facilitate tilt adjustability so as to achieve true vertical mounting of the trail bike holder to towbars with non horizontal receivers. Fastening is achieved by one hexagonal head bolt, flat washers and nyloo nut 15 locating through partial radial slot 14 in the two welded luge of 11 and 12. Both methods for locating the rigid frame section 3 to the towbar mounted arm 2 allow the operator to pre select the prefered direction of insertion by the 180 degree reversal of the square receiver 9, thus leaving an unobstructed view of the motor vehicle number plate. That is, the trail bike front wheel stopper 16 position can be. on either driver or passenger side of the motor vehicle.
The semi pivotal channel iron 4 in the lowered position is the component which provides the on/off ramp for the trail bike. The semi pivotal channel iron 4 in the raised position provides support for the trail bike rear wheel.
The channel iron width is greater at the position where the trail bike rear wheel is supported due to the fact that trail bikes are equipped with wider rear tyres. The trail bike is pushed up and beyond the semi pivotal channel 11-25- 2 12:12 EDMONTON POST OFFICE ID=74.554579 P04 iron 4 onto the rigid frame sectlon 3 front wheel first, Causing contact of the upper section of the front tyre to the steel roller bush 15 which raisen the unfastened height adjustable front wheel clamp 5. With the front wheel against the 100 degree from horizontal stopper channel iron 16 one bolt is inserted in the corresponding 10*5 a hole in the square receiver 17 and fastened with one nyloo nut. NB there are eight 10.5 m holes in the aquare receiver 17 with a hole centre spacing of fourteen am, and multiple holes in the height adjustable front wheel clamp 5 with a hole centre spacing of sixteen am thus allowing bolt location in wheel clamp 5 height increments equaling two a.
The self height adjustable front wheel clamp channel iron web sections 18 are flared apart ten degree per side so as to provide a bevel to the channel iron webs thus allowing firm mating between the channel iron webs 18 and upper trail bike front tyres of various widths. The self height adjustable front wheel clamp 5 is assisted against binding in the square receiver 17 by means of two rigid frame mounted ball bearings 19 providing rotating support to the opposing upper and lower binding section in the square receiver 17 during upward motion of the front wheel clamp 5 on impact with the trail bike front tyre, The steel bushed sssor jack 6 is equipped with one upper jack chasais ve- Ided steel bush 20 located with a sixteen no diameter steel pin to the underside welded and drilled luga 21 of the semi pivotal channel iron 4 and one lower jack chassis welded steel bush 22 located with a sixteen =m diameter steel pin to the side plated recessed mounting holes 23 of the rigid rame section 3. The steel bushed scissor jack 6 is recess mounted to the r- $gld frame section 5 to allow the jack to remain twenty five r&aLed when the semi pivotal channel iron 4 is in the fully lowered position, thus improving mechanical advantage of the jack. Alternatively a geared reduction may be utilized to increase the crank handle ratio over the scissor Jack pindle. With the trail bike front wheel clamped to the rigid frame section 3 and trail bike gear box in the neutral position, the operator may oomienCe jacking phase, thus lifting the semi pivotal chadnel iron 4 together with the supported rear wheel of the trail bike, up to a forty five degree angle.
This allows the length dimension of the trail bike to be contained within the width dimension of the motor vehicle.
The rear wheel of the trail bike is secured to the semi pivotal Channel iron 4 via means of the two footpeg sockets 7 and turnbuckles 25. The footpeg sockets 7 are manufactured of steel pipe of larger internal diameter than footpeg thickness of trail bike, thus allowing footpeg insertion. The turn- 11-25-92 12:12 EDMONTON POST OFFICE ID=87495546579 P95/69 buckles 25 are attached between the footpeg aockets 7 welded eye lugs and the rigid frame section 3 welded eye lus then rotated to increase tension between trail bike footpegs and the rigid frame section 3 and locked with fitted lock nuts.
The multi adjustable stabilizer brace 8 connects to the rigid frame section 3 via two welded eye lugs 24 and to one end of the towbar via one demountable hinge cylindrical coupling 26 bolted to the multi hole rhs extendable arm 27 inserted in the eigth hole square receiver 28 which is connected to one lower welded eye lug 24 of the rigid frame section 3. Thus adjustment and fastening is achieved similar to the operational characteristics of the square receiver 17. The remaining adjustment required is achievable via one turnbuckle 29 connection between the welded eye lug of the square receiver 28 and the upper welded eye lug 24 of the rigid frame section 3. This turnbuckle 29 is equipped with one eye on each end and also fitted with one lock nut.
