O1 SA TRACK FOR A SLIDING DOOR
U
STechnical Field The present invention relates to sliding doors and more particularly to the tracks for sliding doors upon which the rollers of sliding doors move.
Background of the Invention SSliding doors include a floor mounted track upon which the sliding door moves.
More particularly, the track is engaged by rollers mounted in the door.
The above-mentioned tracks are secured to a supporting surface generally by threaded fasteners, the heads of which are exposed.
to The above-discussed means of securing tracks to a supporting surface could be i improved aesthetically. However a problem exists in that the fasteners frequently provide sharp edges.
Object of the Invention It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate at Is least one of the above disadvantages.
Summary of the Invention There is disclosed herein a track to be engaged by rollers of a sliding door, said track including: a base member to be secured to a supporting surface so that in use the base member is generally horizontally extending along a bottom of a door opening, the base member having a longitudinally extending bottom plate and a pair of longitudinally extending flanges spaced by the plate and extending upwardly therefrom; and a track member snap engaged on the base member so as to extend therealong, and including at least one roller engaging recess extending longitudinally of the track member, and wherein the track member further includes a longitudinally extending web and a pair of longitudinally extending flanges spaced by and extending downward from the web so that base flanges are located between the track flanges and the web is located above the plate, wherein the track member covers the base member by the track flanges extending to adjacent the plate.
Preferably, the track member includes a pair of generally parallel coextensive recesses to be engaged by rollers of the door.
Preferably, said flanges of said track member snap engage over the flanges of said base member.
Brief Description of the Drawings A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: AH21(475124_1):KEH Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a track upon which a sliding door is supported; Figure 2 is a schematic end elevation of a track member of the track of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a schematic end elevation of a base member of the track of Figure 1.
Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a track 10 upon which a sliding door is supported. More particularly, the sliding door would have rollers that engage and support the door on the track The track 10 includes a base member 11 which is mounted on a supporting surface such as a floor or part of a door jam. The base member 11 in use would be generally horizontally extending and would extend across the bottom of a door opening.
Typically the base member 11 would be secured to the supporting surface by means of threaded fasteners.
The base member 11 includes a bottom plate 14 from which there upwardly extends a pair of spaced flanges 13. The flanges 13 extend the length of the base member 11 and converge upwardly. At the lower portion of each flange 13 there is provided a longitudinally extending ridge 19.
Snap engaged on the base member 11 is a track member 12. The track member 12 includes a central web 15 bridging a pair of spaced flanges 20. More particularly, the flanges 20 extend downwardly to and terminate atinwardly extending projections 16.
The projections 16 extend the full length of the track member 12.
Extending downwardly from the web 15 adjacent the centre thereof are support flanges 17 that engage the base member 11 to aid in supporting the track member 12.
The track member 12 is installed on the base member 11 by means of downward movement of the track member 12 over the base member 11. The flanges 20 are resiliently urged apart by engagement with the flanges 13 until the projections 16 pass over the ridges 19. More particularly, the flanges 20 "snap engage" over the ridges 19 so that the track member 12 is retained on the base member 11. Thus any fasteners used to secure the base member 11 to a supporting surface are covered.
Typically, the base member 11 and track member 12 would be aluminium extrusions.
[R LIBTT]02959.doc:hxa The web 15 of this embodiment is provided with a pair of longitudinally extending recesses 18 which guide the rollers of the sliding door in their movement along the track [R:\LIBTT]02959.doc:hxa
