Description

STANDARD SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT Invention Title: WORD BUILDER The invention is described in the following statement: This invention is an instrument with slides showing letters of the alphabet.
The slides are manually operated to help a student learn the letters of the alphabet and their sequence. The instrument can also help a student acquire proficiency in the formation of syllables and words and correct spelling.
In another form of the invention, slides containing digits, numbers and mathematical symbols can help a student to master the arithmetic processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and other mathematical processes. The parts of the instrument can be made of any suitable material such as cardboard or moulded plastic.
To assist with understanding the invention, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which show two examples of the invention in use.
In the drawings FIG 1 shows one example of the WORD BUILDER in which slides have been moved to form the word c r e d I t. In the neutral position, no letters appear in the aperture.
FIG 2 shows the baseplate with guides attached vertically. The guides provide lateral suppnnort for the slides and allow the slides to be moved vertically to show selected letters in the aperture A horizontal stay limits downward movement of the slides FIG 3 shows the coverplate which is attached to the guides and stay It confines the slides and in conjunction with the guides permits up and down movement of the slides FIG 4 shows examples of slides One example shows letters a to m on one side. Letters n to z are shown on the reverse side. Another slide shows digits 0 to 9 and numbers 10 to 14 on one side. Numbers to 30 appear on the reverse side. The other slide shows mathematical symbols.
FIG 5 shows the instrument in which an arithmetic calculation is displayed.
The instrument is most effectively used under the supervision of a teacher or tutor. Using a similar but larger instrument, the teacher can demonstrate, set exercises and provide correct answers to a class. The WORD BIJILDER can develop the esscntial ability to identify the letters of the alphabet. It can provide opportunities to combine letters into syllables and words and assist with correct spelling. The combination of hands-on operation of the instrument with a wide variety of possible exercises facilitates the student's mastery of letters, syllables and words which is essential for reading and writing.
Using slides showing digits, numbers and mathematical symbols, it is possible to demonstrate a wide range of arithmetic and mathematical calculations.
