Painting Tool Field of tbe Invention The present invention relates to a painting tool.
Background of the Invention When painting, it is desirable to reduce the numnber of painting strokes in order to reduce painting time. It is also desirable to have the paint brush or paint roller at a position or orientation which provides best painting results, but also be ergonomically comfortable to the painter.
Object of the Invention It is the object of the present Invention to address the above desires.
Summary of the Invention The present invention provides a painting tool having: an applicator rod having a first and a second longitudinal end; a paint applicator mounted on the applicator rod so as to be located adjacent the applicator rod first end; a handle rod having a first and a second longitudinal end; a handle mounted on the handle rod first end; the applicator rod second end and the handle rod second end being secured to a connector to define a relative angular position between the applicator and handle rods, the connector having means for altering said relative angular position, and wherein said relative angular position can be fixed at a desired position; wherein the applicator rod can be rotated about its longitudinal axis relative to toe connector and secured at a desired rotated position.
Brief Description of the Drawings Preferred forms of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 shows a rod for a roller; Figure 2 shows a rod for a flat brush; Figure 3 shows a handle assemnbly-, Figure 4 shows front and end views of a weather board roller, Figure 5 shows front and end views of a flat brush; (R:%LIBLL] I 5O23.doc:PIDP COMS ID No: SMBI-00527594 Received by IP Australia: Time 14:32 Date 2003-12-09 2 Figure 6 shows front and end views of a cornice roller; Figure 7 shows a connector; Figure 8 shows the combination of the cornice roller, the connector and the handle; and Figure 9 shows the combination of the cornice roller, the flat brush, the connector and the handle.
Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments Figure 1 shows a rod 10 for the cornice roller 60 of Figure 6. The rod includes a roller portion 11, a bent middle portion 12 and a connector attachment portion 13 which extends perpendicularly to the roller portion 11. The end of the attachment portion 13 has a threaded nut 14 which receives a bolt 15. The cornice roller 60 (Fig. 6) includes a curved cornice painting surface 61 joined by a flat stepped section 62. The roller 60 includes an axial hole 63 extending therethrough. The roller portion 11 of the rod 10 has a round cross-section for insertion into the cornice roller axial hole 63 such that the roller 60 is rotatable.
Figure 2 shows a rod 20 for the flat brush 50 of Figure 5. The rod 20 includes a brush portion 21, a bent middle portion 22 and a connector attachment portion 23 which extends perpendicularly to the brush portion 21. The end of the attachment portion 23 has a threaded nut 24 which receives a bolt 25. The flat brush 50 (Fig. includes brush mount 51 and brush 52. The mount 51 includes a square hole 53 extending therethrough. The brush portion 21 of the rod 20 has a square cross-section for insertion into the brush hole 53.
Figure 3 shows a handle assembly 30 which includes a handle 31 and a rod 32 extending therefrom. The end of the rod 31 has a threaded nut 34 which receives a bolt Figure 7 shows a connector 70, having first and second curved portions 71 and 72. The first portion 71 includes a first slot 73 and the second portion 72 includes a second slot 74. The first and second slots 73, 74 extend substantially perpendicularly relative to each other and are separated by a space Figure 8 shows the combination 80 of cornice roller 60, rod 10, connector and the handle assembly 30. As shown, the rod roller portion 11 is inserted into the cornice roller axial hole 63 such that the roller 60 is rotatable. The rod bolt 15 is then inserted through the connector slot 73 and into the nut 14, such that the rod 10 is [I:\DAYLIB\LIBLL] I 5025.doc:FDP secured to the connector 70. The bolt 35 of the handle rod 30 is then inserted through the connector slot 74 and into the nut 34, such that the handle rod 30 is also secured to the connector The position of the rods 10 and 30 along the respective slots 73 and 74 can be altered. Thus, the relative angular position between the rods 10 and 30 can be altered and fixed at a desired angular position. Also, each rod 10 and 30 can be rotated within their respective slots 73 and 74. Thus, the position of the handle 31 relative to the position and angle (orientation) of the cornice roller 60 can be altered as required for optimum user comfort. Further adjustment options between the handle 31 and cornice roller 60 are provided as both the slots 73 and 74 are curved (due to the curved first and second portions 71 and 72).
Figure 9 shows the combination 80 of Figure 8, and further including the rod and flat brush 50. As shown, the brush portion 21 of the rod 20 is inserted into the flat brush hole 53. The bolt 25 of the rod 20 is then inserted through the connector slot 73 and into the nut 24, such that the rod 20 is secured to the connector 70 in a similar manner as the rod 10. The painting portions of the roller 60 and flat brush are thus substantially aligned. The combination shown allows painting using the cornice roller 60 with the brush 50 immediately brushing the areas painted by the roller 60. The brush 50 thus performs a finishing task of smoothing out the newly applied paint and getting rid of any bubbles therein. This combination thus provides a reduced painting time.
The weather board roller 40 shown in Figure 4 can be used with the rod 10 in a similar manner as the cornice roller 60. The roller 40 is specifically shaped for painting stepped weatherboards.
The rollers 40 and 60 described above are specifically shaped for painting special areas such as external timber cladding, weatherboard and cornices which require extra detail and attention due to the corners and curves involved. The rollers and 60 can be made from cotton, wool or sponge. It is to be understood however that the present invention can be used with normal cylindrical rollers.
Although preferred embodiments of the present invention have been described, it will be apparent to skilled persons that the invention can be embodied in other forms or that modifications can be made to the above embodiments.
