Description
Description Brake Drum Removal trolley The brake drum removal trolley is a tool to assist in the removal of truck and heavy vehicle brake drum and hub assemblies. It was developed because there was no previous method of removing these 60-70kg brake drums from the axles of trucks and trailers which was required in order to service and replace the brakes and bearings of heavy vehicles. Many operators were forced to lift these heavy items off the axles manually, which has resulted in back injury. The "brakemaster" trolley is designed to be cheap, compact, and manouvreable, which makes it suitable for use in truck maintenance environments such as those with dirt floors and limited space for movement. The brakemaster trolley consists of a trolley frame with handles bent so that while the bottom part of the frame is parallel with the ground, the handles are 900mm, or standard waist height above the ground. An adjustable cradle attaches to the studs and the front of the brake drum while bosses clip onto the studs of the brake drum and hold it firmly. The cradle may be adjusted by sliding the rails to fit the brake drum. A scissor lifting mechanism joins the top cradle to the main frame. It consists of arms, pivoted in the centre, anchored pivotally at one end, and on the other end, recessed into a groove cut into the Rectangular hollow section frame of the trolley, where small bearings hold the end into the groove, allowing one end of the scissor mechanism on each part of the frame to slide easily. Lifting is provided by means of a small hydraulic jack, controlled through specifically designed handles which allow it to be controlled remotely from the rear of the trolley. The brake drum width adjustment is located firmly by means of a locking mechanism which may consist of a simple pin, or a spring-loaded pin mechanism designed specially for the article. Stud width adjustment is provided by means of freely moving sliders on rails, onto which are attached height adjusting bolts. The whole trolley is supported by an axle on which run wheels of reasonable size, about 200mm. They may be of any construction strong enough to hold the weight of the brake drum. The trolley is designed to balance backwards onto a stand when loaded with a brake drum, so axle must be suitably positioned so as to allow this to happen. Different ways of putting this invention into effect are:- Mild Steel Rectangular hollow section construction, with handles bent at 120 degrees to the horizontal, grooves cut into the rail on the main frame and rail on the cradle so as to allow the scissor arms to slide inside the rails and put into effect the scissor mechanism. The jack is supported between the axle and a pivot on the cradle frame so as to allow it to lift the cradle frame from the main frame while the scissor mechanism lifts with it. The axle is Mild steel which slides inside 26mm Heavy wall mild steel pipe- onto this slide 200mm Rubber/Plastic wheels held on by a washer and circlip. (see drawing). A suitable finish is applied to make it rustproof. OrAs above with Aluminium Rectangular hollw section replacing all Mild Rectangular hollow section. During operation, the cradle is clipped onto studs, then the cradle lifted slightly, removing the weight of the hub from the axle. Front bearings of the brake drum are removed, then the assembly is wheeled out quickly and easily from the axle. The brake drum may be left on the trolley for general cleaning, and easily removed by tipping the trolley forwards so the brake drum sits on the ground. For loading, the unloading process is reversed.
