Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT SUCTION BLOCKAGE PROTECTION IN BATH AND POOL PUMPS The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me.
Julian Webb Adrian Webb 3:44 PM3:44 PM8/06/2002 Suction blockaae protection in bath and cool Dumps A major safety issue for many years has been the blocking of the suction inlet of a bath or pool pump that has either only one suction source, or one that has multiple suction sources that can be all be blocked at the same time, e.g. one or more suction inlets that can be simultaneously blocked by for example the one or more bather(s) or person(s).
The substantial or complete blocking of the pump suction causing cavitation which damages the pump, and the vacuum created against the bather(s) or person(s) skin by this blockage being sufficient to cause welts, bruising etc. If allowed to continue, both pump and bather(s) or person(s) can suffer considerable damage and injury. The invention described herein prevents both damage to the pump and any bather(s) or person(s) by detecting the drop in pressure in the suction line or pump body caused by such a partial or complete blockage and turning the pump off. By using a switch sensitive to pressure drop below a certain limit, or by using any existing pressure or vacuum switches present in the suction line or pump casing, preferably connected to an appropriate control circuit, when a point that causes damage to either pump, bather(s) or person(s) is detected, the pump is turned off and is held off until the cause of the blockage is rectified. The system is reset preferably by having the source of power to the appliance turned off and then back on, or in any other safe and convenient way.

Claims (4)
1. By utilising preferably existing, or added pressure or vacuum switches in the suction system or casing of a bath or pool pump to detect a pressure or vacuum level such as would cause damage to the pump, person(s) or bather(s).
2. This/these switches preferably coupled to an electrical/electronic circuit to allow the switching off of the pump.
3. The pump now being held off until the partial or complete blockage is cleared and any danger to pump, bather(s) or person(s) is removed.
4. The pump now if desired can be returned to normal function by preferably the turning off and back on of power to the appliance, or in any other safe and convenient way. Julian Webb Adrian Webb
