Description
AUSTRALIA
Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION INNOVATION PATENT BI-FOLD SECURITY SCREEN DOOR The following statement is a full description of this invention: BI-FOLD SECURITY SCREEN DOOR This invention relates to the combination of two existing inventions, namely a bi-fold door and a security screen door, to form an improved screen door closure system.
Many residential properties are fitted with standard screen, diamond grill, decorative steel or aluminium doors. The opening requirements of these doors are an arc radiating from the hinged side of the door panel, outwards and swinging in an arc, the radius of which is equal to the width of the door frame.
This innovation creates a space-efficient opening mechanism requiring only one quarter of the opening area, the radius of the arc being a half of the width of the door frame.
This innovation enables a person to be at standard arms length from the door and fully open it without stepping backwards. As a result of this it eliminates the need for any backward movement of a person's body and this reduces the risk of slips, falls and potential injury; particularly considering many of these doorways are immediately adjacent to stairways, on small balconies, or are in other confined areas.
The bi-fold security screen door comprises first and second screen door panels connected by means of a vertical hinge. The outermost edge of the first door panel is hingedly connected to the door frame by means of an upper and lower lug which protrudes into the horizontal members of the door frame. The second door panel is connected to a horizontally extending track structure which extends across the top-most edge of the door frame. The second door panel is connected to the horizontal track by means of a single lug attached to the uppermost top corner furtherest from the first door panel. This lug extends into a runner guide which guides the movement of the lug along the horizontal track. This then enables the second door panel to rotate as the runner guide moves horizontally towards the first door panel and the first and second door panels to move on their vertically hinged axis to be disposed in a generally side-by-side position and the door to be in an open attitude.
When in a closed position the door is fixed into a flat panel attitude by means of vertically extending bolts both above and below the second door panel immediately adjacent to the hinge fixed to the first door panel. These insert into holes in the door frame to lock the door panel into the closed position.
These locking bolts are operated by means of a rotating handle fixed half-way down the second door panel, adjacent to the hinge fixed to the first door panel.
2.
The rotating handle is connected, by means of a short shaft, to a horizontal plate fitted within the door panel's frame, which, when rotated engages or disengages the vertical locking bolts. This movement is achieved by the horizontal plate being connected at either end to rods that connect to both upper and lower locking bolts. As added security two fixed bolts are fitted to the outermost vertical edge of the second door panel that extend into pre-drilled holes in the door frame when the door is closed.
A fixed handle is connected to the second door panel half-way down, furthermost from the first door panel to provide for ease of the opening and closing operation.
Claims (2)
1. The combination of a bi-fold door operation with a security screen door.
2. The method of locking a bi-fold door using two retractable bolts extending into the approximate central portion of the door frames horizontal members.
